Rubio in the ASG? Early voting results are in.
It's not going to happen, of course, but it's pretty fun to see that people have been playing attention to him and the Wolves. Here are the early results for the Guard position:
Kobe 690,613; CP3 540,173; Rubio 133,520; Steve Nash 118,922; Russell Westbrook 107,197
And for Forwards, looks like Love has some competition ahead of him:
Durant 633,538; Blake 394,264; Nowitzki 231,832; Pau 185,428; KLove 143,814; LaMarcus 118,268
Personally, the only way Rubio gets in is through injuries. Nash will probably get in, Lawson has a good chance as well. Rubio would be perfect for the All-Star game, but personally I would be surprised if the coaches vote him in.

David Stern knows the value of having Rubio in the All Star Game, so if the voting or coaches do not do it, I’m guessing that Stern will figure out a way to get Rubio in.
What is the value
International interest? Just curious. I was of the belief that he stood no chance to get in, but everyone else seems to have a different opinion than me…

He's a living sports center highlight reel
He’d single handedly raise ratings, as the fan voting has shown. If he’s getting these kind of votes coming off the bench, just wait until he’s starting and playing 36 minutes a night.
"Not like anybody else"
First of all he can play. Second when you layer that humble and wholesome team first persona with a little international flavor – our PG just sells very well.
Stern made sure Blake Griffin was in both games
and I’m betting Rrrrookie Rubio sees action against the sophomores and the East squad.
Unicorns are only half as magical as Stern’s NBA.
Yo ho ho and a FirstRow stream!
Werd...
To not include the massive semi that is the Rubio hype train would be a terrible PR and business move for Stern. One way or the other, if Rubio keeps up this pace of awesomeness, Rubio is a lock.
I'm sure there's a joke built around
“massive semi”, but I’ll leave it alone, because I suspect it would leave me feeling inadequate.
Bringing honor to uncle rico's family since 2011.
I called it already
Rubio will play in the ASG. People want to see him play. Not just Wolves fans, either.

I'm happy for him to make it
but not if he’s going to get voted in. We gotta sign Love AND keep Rubio in the fold – it would suck huge donkey b*lls to finally have two guys to build around, rightfully offer one the max and then have the other qualify for it but not be able to give it to him.

It's only if
They qualify for All-NBA twice, or All-Star Starter twice. That’s what I remember reading, at least. So I don’t think we have to worry about either of those this year.
Gary, you didn't kill your brother. Those gorillas did.
Yes, but
…it could be an issue when Rubio is up for an extension, right?

I suppose he could qualify for the regular max that guys coming off their rookie contract are eligible to receive.
With him being so early in his career, I doubt he’s going to get the even larger max deal that one is eligible for after passing one of those thresholds. At some point in his career, maybe. Not so soon, with so many good guards in the West.
Gary, you didn't kill your brother. Those gorillas did.
Whether or not Rubio is eligible for a 30% of salary cap max on a hypothetical extension 3 and 5/6th seasons from now is not a problem.
In the event he’s eligible it’s a good thing. Nothing to worry about here.

If he gets put on the ballot I think he could make it in
By the international fan vote. All those Euroleageu fans and especially his home country of Spain pouring in the votes just like Yao Ming used to get.

CP3 is a megastar
Unclear to me if the NBA is as big in Spain as China as they have their own damn good pro league. It will be interesting.

You can have 2 PGs start the all star game
I think Kobe wins no matter what, but CP3 doesn’t have the following he used to. He is regaining it now that he’s in LA but as the years go on the international vote could make things interesting.

No Yao Ming abracadabra
Spanish vote has never taken any Spanish player to the all star game. Also, Rubio has haters in Spain just as Kobe has haters in Boston or Bird had haters in LA.

CP3 probably wouldn't be getting those votes in New Orleans.
It’s not just that LA is a big market, it’s that fans voting for things like this basically notice changes. Paul’s in LA now, their record’s turned around…. Those are the things that register with people.
Sportswriters voting for MVP do the same thing. Michael Jordan isn’t the MVP, it’s Charles Barkley because he went to Phoenix and they’re a step better now. Change gets attention.
The Wolves I think would need to go on a little tear, record-wise, to keep people’s attention on Ricky Rubio.
"Opinion ...a confession."
I don't think he does unless we put up the wins or
he starts putting up crazy games like last year again.

He is averaging 24 and 15, though.
In Tom Ziller’s SBnation MVP rankings the other day, Love was fourth — behind James, Durant and Howard but ahead of LMA, Bosh, Derrick Rose, etc.
Well if guys like Charles Barkely keep calling him the best PF
in the NBA right now maybe they have to.

(Classic example of false dilemma.)
It’s a multiple-choice question, not a yes-no on one player.
"Opinion ...a confession."
Way way too much speculation
I love Rubio. He is a maestro with the ball and a true pleasure to watch for those who love team ball. Still, his NBA career is barely a dozen games old and his team is playing at a .300 clip. From this we get overheated chatter about imminent all-star appearances and max contracts. You are rushing things.
It’s kind of like those depressing interviews Robby Incmikoski does where he asks the Timberwolf du jour (who may have just had his best quarter for a year) what HE thinks about playing with Rubio.
Everyone is working so hard to market Rubio. Perhaps the most endearing thing about Rubio is how he is so above the fray, oblivious to all this. He just wants to play good ball. It is a great tonic to the self-important stars, like LeBron, who feel the world actually is under their gravitational pull. Let’s just let him play and not worry about all-star games, contract extensions, or who we need to get to carve his bust for the HOF. Maybe we can resume this discussion when our team actually has a winning record.

Absolutely spot on. Quite embarrassing when a journalist during a HT or after the game, asks a player who had
one of his best games of the season what he likes playing with Rubio and then walks off without even congratulating his game. Saw it happen 3 times already!

If any Wolves PR people read this site, please pass this sentiment on. I’m sure the players who are being interviewed in this way don’t appreciate it, Ricky probably doesn’t appreciate it, and the fans don’t appreciate it.

Because
he’s white and that makes him pop—
Wait. He’s white, and so marketing him makes sense . . .
Okay, I got nothin’.
