Derrick Williams frustrated, vents on Twitter
I'm mentally too strong for any of this. How I get here!? Back to the wall , ashy knuckles #renegade
https://twitter.com/#!/RealDwill7/status/158387402115792897
My translation of this is that he thought he wouldn't be hitting a rookie wall like this and is visibly frustrated about it. Ashy knuckles? Renegade? I dunno. He's had 3 straight poor shooting nights: 1/7 vs. Bulls, 1/4 vs. Hornets, 1/4 vs. Hawks. When does he bounce back? Should there be any concern? Thoughts?

He's used to adversity

Yep
He’s basically saying that adversity is what got him to where he is, so the adversity that he’s encountered so far in the NBA will only make him better. Knowing his back-story, it seems to fit.

Ashy knuckles... Renegade...
Translation? Black people get ashy :) Especially when we do a lot of stuff with our hands. Our skin just dries out quicker for some reason.
My guess is that he is about to put in work. He’s going to hit the gym harder, play harder, fight harder and do whatever else necessary for him to push through this tough stretch.

I've been thinking about this explation (which I thought was excellent)
But I think the physical fight, conditioning and hard play are all there. “The work” he needs to do involves watching a lot of film and picking his coaches brains at every opportunity. He needs to transform his game to the NBA, unlike many of the Wolves other pieces he seems like he has the frame of mind to do this fairly quickly.

Weird
I know that song, but missed the reference for some reason.
Speaking of rap references, I’m waiting for the day when SirLusciousLeftFoot and Daddyfatsax are in the same thread.

I had to hustle, my back to the wall, ashy knuckles
Renegade – Jay-Z
Like someone said, he’s just frustrated. Sounds like he’ll work hard and get out of it. Tough season to be a rookie in the NBA.

It's tough to be consistent
when you aren’t getting consistent playing time
It’s an absolute crime that Wes and Beasley have been playing the majority of the 3 minutes.
I personally don’t want to trade him, but if Adleman isn’t going to play the kid, I’m sure there are plenty of teams out there that would love to have him.
I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.
It's a tough position for RA
Do you continue to play Williams when he looks like crap at the expense of the team in the hope that he’ll get it? Or do you bring him along slowly and hope to build him up?
He didn't look like crap
during the 3 game stretch where he was always over 12 pts.
Before a few games back he had upped his PER to 16 and was looking good, then Adleman cut his minutes

I remain unimpressed.
And skeptical of how his game will translate.
RA decided
that Williams will play the 4 this year. Not much of an opportunity (limited practice during this season) to get accustomed to the 3. Its only 12 games into a bastardized season.. I wouldn’t sound any alarms and start looking to trade Williams.

He
has not played like crap lol. He has played very well, and is taking open threes with confidence. He also has shown great potential of getting inside the paint, although he has not learned to finish yet. With his explosiveness and touch, I honestly doubt it will be long until he begins to make close shots in the paint. He also has shown that he can create space for himself to get himself open to shoot.
Granted, he is not playing like a polished veteran who is clicking in all cylinders with the players next to him, but we should remember he is a rookie. A rookie who has curiously been given short minutes on the court. He almost seems to me like he is defering to other guys a lot on offense, and I wish to see him take more opportunities for himself.
I am having trouble getting his other tweets
To put this in perspective. One I do see is the frustration that we all have that no one on this team can make the big shot at the end of games like Koby for example.
Kobe seems to be his example (it is not mine)
I am saying this to avoid starting a argument about the whose clutch subject.
Williams needs to play more at the 4.
4 when Love is out and 4 when Love is a 5.
Rubios - "Clinically PROVEN to Help Reduce Suckiness"
He might need to do it on a new team
and I say that with love.
For the loser now
Will be later to win
looking back at Love his first year who was also 20yrs old
(Basketball Reference has the game logs for the 2008-09 season) you can see he really had trouble scoring consistently his first 31 games and didn’t get one double double until his 15th game.
I believe many thought we had still made a mistake in not taking Mayo. Mayo never did develop though (a look at 82 games comparing him to his opponent shows he never has become an average NBA player while Love really began to show improvement later in the season.
Does
anyone get the feeling the Williams is deferring to other players on the offense? It doesn’t seem like he’s intimidated by the opportunity, but it seems like he is being too unselfish and is working too hard to fit in instead of playing his game. Basically, the opposite of Michael Beasley.
I think Williams is trying to find his sweet spots in the NBA
He started the year firing mostly threes. I would imagine Adelman asked him to try to get some shots closer to the rim. He has had trouble with offensive fouls when driving, but he is trying. When offensive rebounding he has had a lot of close shots rim out or get swatted. He probably getting used to NBA defenders who are bigger/strong/faster than he saw in college.
I personally like the way he has hit the glass at times. His rebounding and offense are real helps. I suspect his defense is keeping him off the floor. Hopefully he can learn & execute what Rick wants soon, because we need him to step up and form a Big Three with Love & Rubio.

He's frustrated because
he needed an offseason, and a season with lots of practices, to get better — it’s already hard enough to improve DURING one’s rookie year. Must be tough struggling every day while not making much improvement. Keep your head up, fight through the season, and work like a maniac in the offseason. Good things will happen.
