Biyombo Watch

11 pt (5/5 FG) 10 boards 4 blocks in 21 minutes last night against Dwight Howard.

It’ll be awhile before any kind of definitive perspective can be made, but a solid night for Bismack.

Soooo

I may have put some money on the Detroit moneyline (+350). It was a very small amount so I’ll happily lose it, and I assume most of my underdog luck was used up on the NY Giants. Go Wolves!

They've won

every game I bet on them. Heh, I just threw in $50 for fun for the NFL playoffs and hit it with the Giants. I assume I’ll be able to screw around with those winnings for a couple months.

Experience has taught me that optimism only leads to disappointment

For example, I said at the start that this was winnable. And consequently I have sat through an appalling display of failure.

You gotta admit this season's been different

With Rubio in the fold, we are capable of making comebacks (like the incomplete one against the Bulls), or in blowing open a close game in the final minutes (like last night).

by princelyfrank on Jan 18, 2012 8:06 PM CST up reply actions

We are capable of making comebacks

We are not capable of good performances in crunch time – or at least haven’t shown that. I love how much better the team is, but if we go down, I have no confidence in the ability of the team to win from behind. We can get back, yes, but can we actually complete the comeback?

Falso

I take offense when people do this. There is nothing wrong with the statistic and it is not meaningless. The statistic is a number and does it’s job perfectly. You are the one misinterpreting the number or wanting it to do more than it is meant to.

It means the Wolves are up two when Love has been in the game. And the Wolves are up two when Rubio has been in the game.

That’s hardly meaningless. You’re just asking a banana to make lemonade. Or a Darko to dunk a basketball.

Not in the slightest.

The something being conveyed is that the Wolves outscored the Pistons by 2 points in the first two quarters when Love was in the game.

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern had it worse though.

Well, to be fair . . .

I’m not just fucking with you. I do think it’s a legitimately stupid thing to say or post in public. Nobody’s going to argue about your right to push stupid ideas in the public realm, but many people will object to the good sense of that. Your comment about being a “young guy” struck me in a sensitive place, because I recall being a “young guy.” I just wish I’d gotten past being a “young guy” before I’d said and done so many stupid things.

Nobody’s going to enact a policy against you saying or writing offensive things. But the internet keeps this shit forever. Try to do you future self proud.

But really it was just a random off the cuff comment. I am not stupid. Especially, I am not a dumb young buck. The only thing I meant by that comment was that I was not aware that the term “no homo” had been used for years already.

Again, I do not want to you guys to assume things about me because of two words I randomly posted on a basketball blog. You don’t know me, you don’t know my values, and you don’t know how I carry myself on a day to day basis. Please do not assume things.

You do realize

that’s it’s extremely offensive to some (not all, as some probably just laugh at you for it) gay people, right? It doesn’t matter that it’s seven years old. If you’re old enough to post on here, you’re old enough to discern for yourself that this is just crazy stupid. You’re setting a terrible example for yourself and others. And even if you’re not the type of person that I should be offended for saying this, you’re enabling other people and teaching them that homosexuality is bad and that they should discriminate against people who are gay.

Ummm... I guess.

On the extreme edges of a populace nearly anything one says can be construed as offensive. I really don’t think that is the case here at CH. At all. We come here for our team and engage and discourse on a variety of topics. No one is purposefully offensive in the least. If anything its the retarded jokes that get out of hand. A modicum of tolerance goes a long way. Berating someone for the use of a trite literary anachronism is far more damaging that the intent.

by Boss10 on Jan 18, 2012 10:05 PM CST up reply actions

Are you trying to offend someone by saying this?

I’ll assume the answer is a ‘no’ so I will continue on:

Do you realize that you are offending people regardless of your intent?

I’ll assume the answer is ‘no’ again. But you are.

We come here for our team and engage and discourse on a variety of topics. No one is purposefully offensive in the least. If anything its the retarded jokes that get out of hand.

Glossing over your embarrassing use of the word ‘retarded’ during this conversation, you’re right about what we come here for. It’s a community of people who like to have civil discourse about a variety of things and none of them want to leave offended. I also know at least one person has openly come out on CH. You think he’s the only one? Or that he isn’t offended by that?

So you admit you’re not purposefully offensive? So now that I have informed you that it is, in fact, offensive, you can stop saying it, yes? And add retarded to that list as well.

Funny, that.

I’ve been re-reading Gulliver’s Travels, and just ten minutes after reading your comment I came across the following in Book IV:

On the fourth day, venturing out early a little too far, I saw twenty or thirty natives upon a height, not above five hundred yards from me. They were stark naked, men, women, and children, round a fire, as I could discover by the smoke. One of them spied me, and gave notice to the rest; five of them advanced towards me, leaving the women and children at the fire. I made what hast I could to the shore, and getting into my canoe, shoved off: the savages observing me retreat, ran after me; and before I could get far enough into the sea, discharged an arrow which wounded me deeply on the inside of my left knee (I shall carry the mark to my grave).

It seems Jonathan Swift was in on the cliche almost four centuries before Skyrim produced it.

I have to say, “No.” It’s not amusing. It’s never amused me. I like wordplay as much as Jay Smooth does, but “no homo” has never struck me as anything but stupid and homophobic.

I’m not tapped into hip hop culture, and I don’t claim to be an arbiter of what’s popular, but those considerations seem to fade in comparison to what the social justice dialogue is in our culture.

I have more to say, but that’s where I’ll stop.

Yeah.

Even discounting the religion hangup, by all accounts he’s just a good dude. As far as I’m concerned, his life is probably bliss.

I reckon it’s all in his head. Need to build his confidence. One magical play one day will do it.

Total bunk. Shaq is still too close to the game, and is too dumb, to actually give any real insight.

by CoffeeJanitor on Jan 18, 2012 9:58 PM CST up reply actions

His game is so good and so bad.

Bad:
He hasn’t managed a defensive board on the year.
He charges.
He commits three second penalties
He commits illegal screens.

Good:
He establishes extremely good position and seals off driving lanes
He converts shots into points
He rebounds well on the offensive end
He puts in good effort on man defense.

If he lays off the turn over causing things he’ll have a long career in this league.

Having a real coach....

…is a new sensation for me. I feel like a stranger in a foreign land. I know i’ve been asking for half time adjustments and a decent rotation for years now, but it’s such an unfamilar sensation. Don’t get me wrong, i’m happy, but I think I had a case of Stockholm Syndrome with our previous staffs. It’s just not as fun to watch TV and yell “Yeah, do that” as it was to yell “You can’t run an offense through Darko Mother-Bleepin Milisuck”.

Two major differences in the Wolves this year were borne out tonight

first, they are limiting their opponents’ 3 point attempts. (Detroit with 11 tonight). Second they are actually shooting more free throws than their opponents (which seems like its NEVER happened in franchise history).

That shows such a better understanding of what wins in the NBA than the last few terrible years. 3s and free throws.

The Wolves are like the worst meal you've ever had--terrible while you're eating it and even worse later.

Random Wayne question

He was never considered one of the best two players on his team in college, and he (besides Lawson’s injury) always had solid PG play. Is this stretch of not terrible play sustainable in the least?
