Love wants 5 year max, Wolves currently offering 4 year max
I do not have an article to cite (I looked but couldn't find one), only Chris Broussard's short Sportscenter segment on Love's contract which aired last night after the game. In it, he stated exactly what the title of this Fanpost says: Love wants a 5 year max contract, and the Wolves (as of last night) want a 4 year max contract. He was a bit ambiguous, as to my knowledge he did not imply if the camps had talked this over already or if these were simply the preferred deals for both sides as of last night.
Regardless, if Broussard is accurate here, the Wolves are/were lowballing Love here. Hopefully that game-winner got him the fifth year he deserves.

This just irks me...
…especially after the lockout. Small market teams want to compete. The only way they can do this is with a better allocation of top end resources. That’s the whole “problem” with competitive balance: it’s a matter of supply and demand of the best players. There simply aren’t enough to go around. The new CBA gives teams like the Wolves what they want: a salary scale with room for only 1 awesome player to get the big cookie. They then try to not give the big cookie to their awesome player. These jackasses want it every which way.
I'm correct that you only have 1 max offer to give, yes?
Which means we wouldn’t have it to give to Ricky in time?
Unicorns, Leprechauns, and Magic F***ing Beans!
I don't know if this deserves that much vitriol.
The Wolves have two awesome players, and you never know when another awesome player will arrive, so they try to save back their ammo for when they absolutely need it. Sure, Love deserves the biggest possible contract, but if he is willing to do a 4 year deal instead of 5 year then that would be better for the team, because it would allow them to get someone else as well. That would help the team and therefore help Love get that title he wants.
Besides, we don’t even know what is going on. To start deriding the organization as jackasses because of some rumor article is a bit over the top.

The question becomes, whether jackasses or not...
…when exactly they’re going to get another player as awesome as Kevin Love. They’ve had one player better than him ever. They aren’t likely getting another really high pick anytime soon, and the player they took 2nd overall this year is never going to be as good as Love and will in all likelihood never be an All-Star. Superstars are where it’s at in the NBA, and Love is a legit superstar, even if he doesn’t look the part.

Rubio is the only one at issue here
Only Williams or a “traded for” rookie contract guy would be other candidates for a max deal, and both scenarios would be very unlikely. Williams likely won’t deserve one, nor would someone we’d actually be able to trade for.
Rubio is the game changer. He’s more important to this team than Kevin Love, and I’d suggest by a fair margin. They will need a decided advantage to re-sign him, perhaps, and that 5th year with the larger raises is really all the Wolves will have.
But Love is also very important and more immediate. I just don’t that they can turn him down if he insists on the fifth year. What I think he’s going to do (I know I would) is sign for four years if the Wolves give him an opt-out after three. That gives everybody a Love/Rubio/Adelman combination guaranteed for these next three years. So that’s what I think will happen. If Love really wants five, the team has to give it to him. If he’s willing to go four, he’ll get an opt-out.
You can't...dust...for vomit.
Clarification
Maybe it’s obvious, but the Wolves probably won’t have a first round pick who will come out of his rookie contract before Love is done with his five years. That is unless the Wolves get Utah’s pick this year and make a Kobe-like selection, which probably isn’t possible these days.
You can't...dust...for vomit.
We need a second source on this
It just doesn’t make much sense. I’m not saying that Kahn and his boss don’t do dumb things, but I believe it is speculation at this point. SNP, you need to calm down (but I understand getting upset at thought of Kahn and Papa Glen doing stupid shit), until this “rumor” has at least been verified locally or by someone other than broussard and his two minutes of fame on sports center…
wow
really bad writing on my part. the jackass comment was meant to refer to small market owners who complain about competitive balance. not aimed at anyone in particular with the wolves.
The Dan Gilbert/Sarver/Taylor group that cost everybody games
This provision is the carrot they wanted to keep their stars in town and to spread things out.
I can't read too much into it
Two days ago it was Love’s camp that wanted the 4 year max deal because he wants more time to evaluate whether the organisation is moving in the right direction. It’s media fodder.
To me, either way he’s getting the max amount – according to “reports” anyway. It’s not like the Wolves went in and said, “We’ll give you $11 mil/year.” If the only thing they are discussing is whether it’s a 4 or 5 year deal, I’m thinking for all intents and purposes it is a done deal.
Reason is the first victim of strong emotion.
I don't think we heard anything from Love's camp, even in the rumor mill
The reports were that the Wolves were going to offer the four year max, which goes along with this

nodnarb's right
some outlets did report that Love might only want a four year deal.
Right now, everything is media scuttlebutt. Like Love said about Rubio coming over, “I’ll believe it when I see it.” Same goes with Love contract negotiations. I’m not believing anything until there’s a contract or we’re past January 25th.
Guys,, Broussard is completely awful as a reporter..
although the rumors he spouts are occasionally true, they are wrong the vast majority of the time. Don’t read too much into this.
Heeee alsoooooo haaaaaas a haaaaaabit...
of draaaaaawing out voooowels ridiiiiiculously looooong.
It’s really irritating to listen to him, and then the stuff he says is wrong a ton. He may have decent sources, but whenever he starts to actually try to analyze players or teams…I don’t know which is worse, he or Clayton in football. Stick to writing down exactly what you were told, stooges. Nobody cares about your ideas.

When does Ricky's big contract opp come up?
Seems like the Wolves could easily give the 5-year max to Rubio then announce a sweet extension to Love’s contract at the same time.
I can’t imagine anyone playing with Rubio and then wanting to leave. Not only does he get the ball to the open man, but I’m hearing that afterwards fans courtside swear they can smell flowers after all his slickest passes.
Every time Ricky Rubio gets an assist, an angel gets its wings.
Yo ho ho and a FirstRow stream!
Someone please explain
Is there some kind of scale in force here, or do you just give Ricky one dollar less than the max?

LOL
I never thought of that. Simple. Genius.
You can't...dust...for vomit.
This is a negotiation
If not the appearance of one. Kevin doesn’t want to leave. The Wolves don’t want him to leave. They dance. The music stops. Love gets the max.
Management can’t just lay down. It sets a precedent.
Yankees played “hardball” with Jeter then gave him twice what he could have gotten elsewhere. They are not alienating Love, nor is their position foolish.
Watch it play out. Love is yours. Enjoy.

I'm not reading much into this
I think both sides are waiting til the deadline. And remember he’s a restricted FA next year. Whoever offers him a 3, 4, or 5 year deal gets an immediate match from Taylor.

Can't he still turn our deal down or something?
I’m foggy on how RFA works

No you can't
Love would seek out a deal with another team. And then the Wolves would have 10 days (I believe) to match the offer or let him walk. RFAs don’t seem to happen all that often. I know we did it to Ryan Hollins a couple of years ago. Most notably Paul Millsap had his offer from the Blazers matched by the Jazz.

I hope he takes the 4
Come on Kevin, haven’t Lebron, Wade and Bosh showed you the model?
We’ve got a dynamic duo. Save a little scratch for the 3rd amigo.

Shouldn't they win a title before it becomes the model?
Or is the model getting on ESPN a lot and posing for the cameras?
(I kid I kid, I get the point of the post)

Don't get me wrong,
Pay the man. I’d love it if he took 4 yrs, because the guy on our roster who is going to be “worth” the 5-yr max is Rubio.
by whistle_this on Jan 21, 2012 6:45 PM CST up reply actions
I guess I’m not too worried about how Love’s contract will potentially effect Rubio’s in 4 years. Rubio might not be able to get our “max” contract when his rookie contract is up, but we’ll still be able to offer him the most money. Ricky does not strike me like the kind of player that would hold a grudge because he’s not the highest paid guy on the the team.
Love is worth the max, so give it to him. We’ll figure the rest out later.
by Blond Ricky on Jan 21, 2012 11:38 PM CST up reply actions
Out of curiosity: does taking the 4 year deal actually save money for other people?
Isn’t the yearly amount the same? Therefore the only year it would save money would be the fifth year, but ostensibly then Love would still want the max available for that year in his new contract?
Therefore it wouldn’t clear up additional money for another guy?
I understand it would prevent us from getting Ricky for five, but based on the duration of their contracts that wouldn’t matter that much anyways because ricky is only on the first year of his deal, so a four year extension would have him around for all of Love’s 5 year deal.
This is insane
Just pay Love the max deal. If any player the twolves ever had deserves a max deal, its Kevin Love. Sometimes getting cute and trying to save for players we could get for the future by not paying the talent that should be paid can backfire… In this case, it probably will.
What are these refs seeing?
I don’t like 90% of the calls today
I gotta stop having 2 threads open
these were supposed to be in the Utah game thread
Love just wants to get paid.
Laker fans already want to claim him, but they can’t afford him. If Love would take the 4 it would be great.
