I hate night class!

In class listening to a professor who barely speaks English that hasn’t slept in 28 hours instead of being at the game…..

I watch this team, and i care so much, simply because i can’t not. It’s just a part of who i am..

nice.. my solution for these problems when I was in college was I never went to class.

I just went to take tests and learned from the books or my friend’s notes.. At the U of MN you could get away with that approach because the classes were too large..

Ha nice

Yeah I go to UW River-Falls. Can’t do that here, only 22 in my class lol

yup.. that sucks..

I remember I had to completely change my approach when I went to medicals school because there were only 40 people in my entire class and attendance was mandatory.. it sucked..

by bsg007 on Jan 23, 2012 6:52 PM CST up reply actions

Nice

I thought about applying to Mayo, but didn’t want the 40 person class experience in Rochester.

by TwinATL on Jan 23, 2012 7:03 PM CST up reply actions

understood.. I did my MD/PhD there so it was bit different

but I don’t blame you for not going there. The city is tough to live in for 8 years from a cultural perspective. However, it is one of the best clinical experiences you can get in the country (there are 8 faculty for every student). In addition, if you’re in state MN, Arizona, or Florida, it’s only 5,000 dollars per year in tuition. Obviously, it’s different if you’re MD/PhD in which case they pay your tuition and give you a stipend, but I don’t recommend going that route unless YOU LOVE science.

If we have 12 for the game we’ve done really well.

.... but

why does the quality matter if there aren’t many of them? You could intentionally hand the ball to the other team eight times in a game, but if those were your only turnovers, then awesome.

by LoveTo on Jan 23, 2012 8:10 PM CST up reply actions

There's a reason why Wolves are 2nd in the league in TO/game

Sometimes you just have to accept those

If teams could decide not to have dumb TOs

Nobody would ever have them. Yet, somehow 15 TOs a game is pretty standard. We have 6 at the half. And you kind of have to accept TOs, because you can’t really do anything about it :)

Yeah, it’s a Hope, but right now, I like that hope more than “Wayne will be consistent” or “If Randolph adds 20 pounds” or “Malcolm Lee” or “someone will get fooled into thinking Wes Johnson can be good.”

Also, after Ricky, he’s the most likable guy on the team IMO. Heart Beasley.

We simply can recall some colective efforts lately

The day taht RR defends, Luke and Ellington sucks.

The day that Love is not outplayed, Ellington stop selecting shots

The day RR is finding his teammates (7 as. at half), everybody misses badly.

The day that Pek shut down the zone, our perimeter is an empty parking lot.

We need 2 or 3 players step up.

Yes, there are not a lot of tools to work with

But we have seen Wayne making shots and defend a lot better. We have seen Darko a lot more active. We have seen Tolliver hitting the glass and setting up some open shots. We have seen better shot selection from Ricky.

It is there, somewhere, Put it back, everybody must know his role. Wayne is not a clutch guy, AR is not our playmaker, Pek is not a PG at the elbow, AR is not a jumper shooter, Darko is a C and he must rebound, Luke is our starting SG and must look for the corners and the offload passes…

We’ve seen it before. That looks no serious at all

The Celtics will be buyers, and Ainge will have a chance to attract players strictly with cash. One thing he is keeping abreast of is the progress of contract negotiations with fourth-year free agents such as Kevin Love.

He seems to be a perfect fit for the Celtics, but the Timberwolves would really have to botch this one for him to become available. He is only 23, one of the game’s top rebounders and a smooth outside scorer. The Celtics would offer him max dollars, but the Timberwolves would have the right to match. Chances: 15 percent.

This is the kind of game that

Adelman can use to teach this team what it means to play physical. Ricky particularly needs some help to understand that when you are getting bumped and shoved, you lower your shoulder and plant someone on their keister.

by Dogpile on Jan 23, 2012 8:55 PM CST reply actions

This is nothing new

They’ve played so many games where the other team has been more physical than this. It seems like the book is out on the Wolves, and especially Rubio and Love, that you need to play excessively physical to take them out of their games. It is especially obvious watching Rubio after some of his early strong games. They just started muscling him up and working him over.

The Wolves probably aren’t good enough to make the playoffs. But they are close, and they’re young, and they’re exciting.

Ricky Rubio and Kevin Love are legitimate stars, and are under 23 years old.

I know it’s tempting to get all jazzed up after fun games like the Clippers win, but not if it’s going to mean we’re this mad when the Wolves lose to playoff-caliber teams like Houston.

by archie2227 on Jan 23, 2012 9:13 PM CST reply actions

It's not really about how many guys are in the rotation.

It’s the timing of the substitutions and the lack of rest.

Why is Darko playing an entire quarter straight and then sitting for the next quarter?

Why are Rubio and Love playing for 15+ straight minutes? Hell, Love played about 20 straight minutes in the second half. He’s not Kevin Johnson.

Let’s not forget, they were leading towards the end of the third, and were in it that entire quarter. It was the Rockets’ bench led by Lowry returning from a breather that blew the Wolves doors off.

by Ray Williams? on Jan 23, 2012 11:08 PM CST up reply actions

A big part of the reason

that the Rockets let Adelman go was because of the poor job he did with substitutions and how he stuck to a small rotation no matter what. He stuck to a 7 man rotation in an OT game after the Rockets were out of the playoff chase even though a bunch of young players had been called up with the intention of taking a look at them. Adelman’s main flaws are how he doesn’t know anything about defense and how he often is stupid with how he does substitutions.

by Bobbythegreat on Jan 23, 2012 11:12 PM CST up reply actions

by zebano on Jan 24, 2012 11:55 AM CST up reply actions

Well that would be one of the teams

that saw a drop off in defense, but it has happened everywhere that he has ever coached. Every coach has strengths and weaknesses, offense is Adelman’s strength, timely substitutions and defense are among his weaknesses.

by Bobbythegreat on Jan 24, 2012 12:58 PM CST up reply actions

Even so,

Adelman’s rotations so far are light years more timely (does that even make sense?) than Rambis’. Mostly in the yanking of players who aren’t playing intelligently.

As soon as someone can sniff that #1 aroma, common sense goes right out the window? The ceiling is not always due to physical limitations. Didn’t Love and Rubio teach you that? Not everyone gets it. Things that are really worrying me all season:
  • Getting killed on the defensive boards, so many second chance points.
  • Love holding the ball for 12 seconds in the post doing nothing and pump faking on wide open shots just to take a contested one.
*Idiotic unforced turnovers by the bushel (last two games before this had me optimistic)
*Rubio getting rejected on seemingly every layup (hope he figures out how to get it in there, but it’s hard to watch so many of them getting blocked.
*Williams…. doing everything. So many charges, balls just lost while dribbling, holding it while double teams come to him.

Do we see these things improving? Am I way offbase?

by Doctor_Teh on Jan 23, 2012 9:22 PM CST reply actions

100% accurate

I would add:

-Effortless perimeter D by Ellington, Tolliver and Williams and not defense ata ll by Ridnour, nearly pointing at him as most rivals’ runs culprit
-Poor basketball awareness: not recognizing matchups at both ends, bad rotating defense, horrid shot selection
-Mental blocking whe we get there. As awful as those games were we’ve been at reach or even leading at times in the 3rd and 4th Qs.

but my affection for Love goes back to his days as a Bruin, where I loved how tough he was. He very well may turn into a complete D-bag, but he’ll probably always be my D-bag.

Unless he ends up on the Lakers.

This effort isnt excusable...

But its going to happen every so often… I cant get too angry about this one…the Rockets are pretty good, and have a solid rotation. If we had Beas, JJ and Martel going well games like this should be less common. Also Rubio is probably not going to play this bad in the 4th again for a while… dont get too pissed at a shitty loss.

not to mention he has to shoot.. the passing lanes will get increasingly more clogged if he does not shoot and keep defenses honest..

in addition, he often is the person getting the highest quality look during a possession. i’d rather he take an open jumper than pass into a contested one.

I doubt we ever play worse than this

And you know, we were only one unfortunate run away from taking a tie game into the fourth with some momentum – against a very solid basketball team. Then we gave up. But I’m not overly concerned to be honest.

A Wolves source, like he has for weeks, continues to maintain that whatever Love’s agent, Jeff Schwartz, wants, he’ll get. In other words, if it’s a five- year offer, it can happen. If it’s an early termination option after the fourth year, that can happen too. Clearly, the Wolves’ preference is a four-year deal since only one player on their roster can get a five-year offer. But more importantly is doing whatever one of the 15 best players on the planet, and yet to reach his prime, wants. ESPN.com

no one really looked all that great

That’s my analysis. Worst game of Rubio’s career, Love played well overall, scored excellently did other things not so well. If we’re gonna play Luke at the 2 we really need a back up point (or just a real 2)

Williams looked alrightish in his first start. He has both the athletic ability and skill set to be awesome and that is clear. He still looks a little awkward driving, not sure what the deal is with that. not sure if that’s something that can be fixed or not, but it’s nice to see most of his shots are at the rim and he gets to the line a lot.

Idk, just a blah game no overt bright spots

"He still looks a little awkward driving, not sure what the deal is with that."

I’ve been harping on his slow 2-footed takeoff, but Spiker at TWolves Central nailed something else:

Williams takes too big a stride when he drives and it leaves him unable to lift off for the shot. Over and over again. As he shoots, he’s about 6’2" instead of 6’9".

by Simitar on Jan 23, 2012 10:20 PM CST reply actions   1 recs

Yeah, he takes the mondo strides

but his two-foooted take-off also comes into play. When he picks up the ball two giant strides from the basket he doesn’t get to gather for his two-footed launch, and he gets no lift at all. It is ugly to watch, that’s for sure.

by dropstep on Jan 23, 2012 10:34 PM CST up reply actions

Good stuff

Yeah, it’s that odd quazi-Euro step he tries to do.

It’s obvious he’s working to adjust to the NBA speed a little. What is funny, at least to me, is that it appears the lanes are there for him and he is almost slowing himself up which causes the defenders to collapse on him.

It feels like he’s only an adjustment away though, which isn’t the worst thing ever. I love how much he attacks the basket, if he can start to connect he’ll really be killing.

I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.

by VoodooMagic on Jan 23, 2012 10:37 PM CST up reply actions

Well,

it seems pretty clear that Wes isn’t behing the slow offensive starts or terrible defense. And, if this is Rubio’s worst game, as some have said here, I will be pretty happy. 12 assists and solid defense. His stats end up a lot like Jason Kidd, who I understand has had a pretty good career. Wolves are young and played short-handed against a team that had much better depth tonight. They have solid veterans and they are not an easy team to beat. Rubio is the only above average defender we have when Wes is out and he cannot guard the whole team. Get well soon Wes!!!

"and he is almost slowing himself up"

He’s totally slowing himself up. None of his moves look instinctive. He’s kind of the opposite of Rubio right now – he appears to be thinking through everything before doing it.

by Simitar on Jan 23, 2012 10:39 PM CST reply actions

Totally

He’s probably pressing a tad bit. Good news is it appears completely fixable and he’s a productive player while doing it, if he’s able to fix it he could be even more productive

by VoodooMagic on Jan 23, 2012 10:41 PM CST up reply actions

Ha

I’m just saying, Williams short coming appears to be something that is just a little adjustmnt.

I.e. he’s able to create the space to slash, but he slows himself up to get the euro thing, so if he adjusts how he drives the lanes will still be there.

Idk it’s, at least to me, not like Wes where he is clearly so far behind the 8 ball on so many issues it seems a bit hopeless….and also Williams has been good.

But, maybe he doesn’t fix it and he is forever only a moderately efficient scorer

I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.

You're so positive :)

I see a guy that keeps reminding me of Donyell Marshall. Looks OK at times, but other times you just go…ummm…

And we traded him while his value was still high….

by Simitar on Jan 23, 2012 10:43 PM CST up reply actions

Basically I still don't think he'll ever be a SF,

and I don’t think he’ll ever be special at PF – which is such a deep position in the league these days…

by Simitar on Jan 23, 2012 10:44 PM CST up reply actions

Ehhh

He played almost exclusively small forward till the fourth (which was his and the teams worst quarter)

Idk, he didn’t look out of place on either end…granted…good matchup for him with Parsons….but still

You agree the two stride step thing is probably a very fixable adjustment right? Of all the things a prospect could struggle with, that seems to be not the worst thing ever. Maybe I’m wrong….idk.

But I mean…just think if he fixes that. The guy is all rim shots already…he’d have had 20 points almost if he was a little more confident finishing.

The guy has slasher capabilities, which is what we need. He doesn’t appear to be a total wreck defensively (which as a rookie I am saying that is a positive thing) and he is productive and efficient even when his shot is broke. I was too young when we had Donyell…but the Donyell I remember (like 1999-2003 Marshall) Williams appears to be much more gifted athletically, intelligently and with driving capabilities.

I’ll remain positive with Williams. It hasn’t been quite as smooth of a transition as I originally thought it would be….but then I remember he is also only 20 (year younger than Rubio) and has shown some very good signs for promise. If my biggest complaint is that his game isn’t completely well rounded yet…I think he’ll be just fine.

I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=79pthef

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=7ejd24p

But moves like these to get the right kind of players around Love and Williams would be the deals I would look to make. get two solid athlete’s/defensive players at the 2 and 5

I personally would be trying to find deals that can help make Williams/Love/Rubio work as opposed to moving Williams….however for the right player I’d be willing to listen to trading Williams.

But:

Thomas/Love/Williams/Henderson/Rubio
Favors/Love/Williams/Burks/Rubio
Love/Johnson/Williams/Derozan/Rubio

I think these are all lineups that could make it work and help us win. Idk, I’m just a dude who likes basketball and has a computer (and likes trades and potential) what I like is more than likely not gonna be what happens….but trying to make it work with our most talented players, as opposed to trading them would be my first choice.

by midlife crisis on Jan 23, 2012 11:53 PM CST reply actions

My Thoughts from The Game

While I had to sit through the entire game in person I had some thoughts. We desperately needed guys like Wes, Coqui, and I’m even going to say Beasley, maybe even a Martell. Wes could have potentially D’d up Kevin Martin who exerted his absolute will all over Wayne Ellingtons face time and time again. Secondly Coqui would have atleast provided a little bit of depth (and probing) of the Rockets defense, which we didn’t really seem to do, until Ricky started penetrating. If you look at what we had playing (Ricky, Luke, Wayne/Dwill, Love/Darko or Pek) not a single one of those guys can beat a single guy off the dribble and finish. NOT A SINGLE ONE. Rubio and Wayne are the only two capable of beating their defender off the dribble which each are pretty good. The problem is they can’t finish down around the basket, so Luke will settle for his nice little jumper, and Ricky will throw up a prayer that A goes in B gets tossed into the 10th row or C hits off the shot clock. Not pretty, but honestly he needs someone besides Love. Guys botched his passes numerous times tonight, but granted it was probably his worst game this year. I really want to see Beaz, or Martell come back and get some minutes, just so we have a guy that can finish near the rim, or slash a little bit.

Now for D-Thrill I honestly do think his problems are fixable. For 1 I would love to see him lose a little bit of weight, get a little quicker, etc. The real problem I see is that he is not playing fluidly/confidently and is not reading the defense correctly. This results in his awkward lay ups that get tossed all over and the weird huge steps he takes that make his ability to finish a 10% chance against a defender anticipating a layup who is also 2 inches taller with a longer wing span ready to block the shot. Either A keep your dribble and be strong with the ball slashing to the lane to the spot on the floor you want and go off of 1 foot jumping so your explosion is vertically not laterally to the rim and jump into the body of the leaping defender which will create space for his under sized frame as well as force fouls to be called on his shots as well. Maybe his outside game helps his inside game and vice versa but his outside shooting is atrocious right now. The elbow sticking out, and legs flailing in the air like a dead duck cause me to cover my eyes. And on top of it he is leisurely strolling/hopping around the floor like he doesn’t have a care in the world. Get your head in the game, get competitive, and play with some passion. I know it can get hard as the wear and the tear of the season edges on, but good players, and good teams find away. RA is still trying to get this into their young heads, and change the dynamic and mentality of this team into winners.

Anyways I personally want to see a higher dosage of AR15 and wouldn’t mind if Tolliver doesn’t play a single minute. I also want more of Peko and less of his brother Darko. Peko can atleast bring some physicality to a squad that otherwise is soft, and this is important when it comes to the psychology of basketball. The physical teams that exert their dominance and will on the other teams usually take the mental edge. IDK it also just made me see how sick it would be to have a guy like Kevin Martin on our team. Other than that, I will write it off as a terrible game for everyone but KLove and that is that.
