Timberwolves v Rockets Report Card 1/23/12

So here are my grades for the Wolves/Rockets game complete with my own personal bias and misperceptions. In general I am more of a intuition evaluator than stats guy so please be aware of that. One of the things I appreciate about this site is the mix of the two approaches to both fandom and player evaluation. I think this dualistic approach is probably the right way to go for the sport of basketball.

Like previous graders I am basically grading each guy on my own expectations of that particular player. I also tend to factor in the timing of a given event- what quarter did it occur or how did it influence a key run for either side.

I have attempted to keep track of bad shots and bad turnovers. Despite three days of evidence that bad shots should be defined in terms of distance from the basket I am defining them here in terms of how they worked in the offense. A player will not be given credit for a bad shot if it makes me recall one of my favorite Trent Tucker lines: “I like that shot, it either goes in or it doesn’t.”

Lastly, I have assigned extra credit for particularly exciting or heads up plays and have subtracted imaginary points for especially poor decisions.

Kevin Love

Negative-Terrible save under own basket, complaining leads to Houston fast break, couple of lazy pass turnovers,

Positive- Aggressively trying to score in the post, got much better after a slow start, timely threes within offense kept us in the game, strong finishing dunks in the lane. Big Scoring night with a great FG%.

A Couple of bad turnovers but otherwise a great game. Can’t blame this one on

K Love.

Ricky Rubio

Negative- Some forced shots, missed defense, coming up short on layups, multiple very bad turnovers contributed to Rocket’s run to close 3rd/open 4th, not so incredible defense to close out the second half

Positive- Controlling tempo, hustle, assists, incredible defense to start the second half, stayed aggressive despite some clear mistakes.

B+ This was tough one for me. He kept us in the game and then seemed to play us out

of it. I finally decided to give him the + because of the energy he brought, although

the bad turnovers were a concern tonight.

Luke Ridnour

Negative- Forced pass when he should have shot, torched by Houston point guards.

Positive- Possibly the only “real” shooter on the team, good passing in third quarter

B+ I thought this was a good game for Luke. He does give some up defensively but it

doesn’t seem to be for lack of effort. Someone needs to back him up. Without his

shooting and timely passing we would not have been nearly as close as we were.

Darko Milicic

Negative- Missed lay up, missed layup, bad foul on Martian, missed hook (ok- it was another layup),

Neutral- New haircut that took him from short to slightly shorter.

Positive- I liked his hustle on several early plays including the opening tip, at least one very nice wrap around pass, defensive hustle.

C+ People will think I am grading Darko way too high here and I am not going to defend

myself. The missed lay ups were painful. Still there were a few things I liked from

him tonight.

Wayne Ellington

Negative- Poor shot selection on three in transition, kind of hacky on defense, not a good shooting night- ok terrible shooting night.

Neutral- Meaningless dunk with 4 seconds left to go in game.

Positive- At least one good defensive play (I felt I had to write something).

C Did Wayne really play 39 minutes? Really. I was trying to pay extra close attention to

the game but I am still surprised by this. I barely noticed him. Did I really miss Wes

Johnson? I’m so confused right now.

Derrick Williams

*First NBA Start

Negative- Despite what I have written below- some of his drives seem a little tentative, bad turnover at what might have been our last chance to start a comeback run, weird outlet pass off the back of Randolph’s head.

Positive- I liked his aggressiveness, especially early in the game, rebounding, a few nice defensive plays, getting to the free throw line.

B Thrust into his first NBA start at a position many feel he cannot play. I think he did -

wait for it- ok. I appreciated his effort to take the ball to the rim. I just wish he would

be a bit more decisive about it. He did go up and get a few big rebounds and I’ll give

him credit for being noticeable in this game.

Anthony Tolliver

Negative- Seems to be stuck in his head right now, a very forced drive

Positive- Seems like a heck of a nice guy (see Ellington).

Incomplete Eight very boring minutes on a night where we were shorthanded. I think I

am being too kind really.

Nikola Pekovic

Negative- Very bad foul on Scola giving up three point play, Crazy pass to the ghost of that guy that slaps the newspaper on floor court side.

Neutral- where did he go in the second half?

Positive- Much needed post scoring (on one play).

Incomplete 10 minutes. Kind of surprised at this because he has looked good lately.

Houston’s front line is pretty athletic and not in a big, crash into each other,

kind of way so maybe it was a match up issue.

Anthony Randolph

Negative- Bad play (bring ball up the floor) immediately after making a good play

Positive- Nice and much needed spark, great decision to give up the ball rewarded with alley-opp, most of his shots were good shots, nice kick out to Ellington.

Incomplete Seven productive minutes is still just seven minutes.

Cameraman vs Houston Fast Break

Too many missed opportunities.

C-

Jim Peterson

Admittedly Jim Peterson is not my favorite announcer so I may be over reacting here. I was really irked by his voice tone when Kevin Love got his 10th rebound as Peterson said something to the effect of “There he gets his double double.” Last year when we were the worst team in the NBA the double double streak was a nice way to stay positive about the season. This year I want something more meaningful. I do not mean this as a knock on Kevin Love in the least. I mean this from a fans perspective. I don’t want to be satisfied with a good stat nights from our star. It just kind of rubbed me the wrong way.

C-

Martell Webster

Extra credit for his snappy dress, bold hairstyle and enthusiasm for the team from the bench so far this season. If he plays with as much energy we will be very glad to have him back.

Incomplete

Game Notes/ Thoughts

Way too lethargic start to the game. They dug themselves a big hole which, to their credit, they climbed out of on Love and Rubio’s play in the second quarter. The big Rocket run that started towards the end of the third really bummed me out. This was a big home game against exactly the kind team we want to start being better than. It’s just so clear that from a talent standpoint we are not better than the Rockets. We need shooters, real shooters. Shooters who can actually shoot on a regular basis. It seems like every game we miss shot after shot while the other team hits shot after shot. I don’t think I have ever seen that many missed lay ups in a game I was not playing in. We have Love (I hope) and we have Rubio, now we need someone else and that someone else better be able to shoot the basketball.

Nice Job

Kevin backed up his talk, saying that his shots were bound to start falling. This is good to see.
I think Ricky and Kevin’s TO came when they were trying to force things, after the slow start. I really hope that these hurt guys, mainly Barea, Beasley and Webster (Lee too but I think he’ll be a while still), will be able to get on the floor soon. Martell is capable, & Barea and Beasley can be great. We need them to come in a help on offense.

We are so thin on the wing. Last night we started a rookie PF and a good-shooting backup PG at the SF and SG spots.

There’s a point in time when whether you like certain players or not (Wes, Beast) their absence. Just shortens the bench too much. I’d like Barea back as well.

When you're starting Derrick Williams at the three out of necessity,

it’s more like Adelman’s triage skills we’re talking about.

Just because he starts doesn't mean he needs to be run into the ground.

In his first start, he played the first 14 minutes of the first half, then didn’t come back in. In the second half, he came out with 0:33 left in the third quarter, and came back in at the 11:10 mark of the fourth and played the rest of the way. The Wolves had most of their rotation players available in the frontcourt. Williams played all but 1:23 of the second half in his first start. Does that make sense, going 14 straight minutes, sitting for 10, then playing effectively the entire second half?

Tolliver, Randolph & Pekovic played 34 minutes combined. If this is an emergency situation, there’s no excuse for not getting these guys in more than that, and getting your players rest earlier. it’s no coincidence that the game got away from them at the end of the third/beginning of the fourth.

What kind of effort are you going to get from players if they can’t trust that their coach will give them rest when they need it?

by Ray Williams? on Jan 24, 2012 9:23 AM CST up reply actions

I think the issue was

That Tolliver, Randolph, and Pekovic all played poorly during the stretch they got minutes. So they didn’t get more minutes. That is how Adelman rolls.

That's not an option.

You have to play with what you have.

Regardless, those players were not significantly worse than the players that did log heavy (and ridiculous) minutes.

"You have to play with what you have."

On this team, I’ll stick with my “triage skills is a better term than rotations” judgment for now.

The wing spots are a sucking wound, here. Any team that loses makes its fans say “I just don’t understand the coach’s rotations, they make no sense.” Adelman’s rotations would make a heck of a lot more sense if he had a single plausible starter at the wing spots.

"First, I'd like to blame the Lord for causing us to lose today."

by feral on Jan 24, 2012 11:21 AM CST up reply actions

Adelman stated last night

that he had no small forwards who could play that night. Was in response to way HOU went small.

Sounds like he doesn’t think Williams is close to playing there.

Cripes … is the team going to tank another year with a weird roster even though they don’t have a pick. Adelman has likely made up his mind on everyone except Lee & Webster, and to expect either to be the 3rd wheel team needs is extremely unlikely. Max Love. Trade anyone besides Love & Rubio to get a functional center, shooting guard, and/or small forward.

I don’t dislike the other guys. But Wolves have no reason not to try to win, and that is tough with the current roster heavy on PGs, PFs, and former high draft picks who are not going to pan out.

Williams will never play there

He’s ginormous and he’s athletic in a rangy way, not in the way that allows athletic freaks like LeBron to guard 4 positions.

They used the highest pick in team history on a guy who plays the same position as the 2nd best player in team history. I think they had to take him at the 2 spot, but at some point you have to give the guy minutes or find something else to do with him. They can’t force him into the 3 spot because it just won’t work. He’s still very, very, very valuable but they can’t make him do things he isn’t capable of because the value will eventually go down.

Past echoes of this same conversation:
Me, Jan 9, 2010 – OVER TWO YEARS AGO:
There’s going to be a huge difference next year on this roster, and the easiest way to describe it is that they’ll have something like starting-caliber wings to put on the court.

I confess, I was wrong. And it’s taken me the better part of two seasons to stop predicting that Kahn might suddenly make the necessary move, too. Mea culpa.

August, 2010:
All last summer I was waiting on Kahn to do similar stuff involving our wing spots, you know? It seemed so obvious. It seemed like he might just be patient about it. But there’s patience, and then there’s just undercutting a whole season.

February, 2011:
Flynn and maybe a Tolliver or Pekovic for a two guard?
Depending on what the return is, it’d be a roster-balancing move. Wait. We don’t do those.

This will never happen

(and then something magic happens) is not a real strategy. The assets are almost all gone. The shine is off 2 lotto picks and they can’t figure out what to do with the 3rd. They’re not getting rid of Love or Rubio. I think they’re hoping for a free agency miracle with Rubio being here but there are 29 teams still out there with a Westbrook deal and a bunch of high end players who still want the big market/big city dream team to run up against the Heat.

Anywho…

(Hoping and praying, hoping and praying.)

((FWIW, I think their best sales pitch right now is to appeal to someone that they have 2 of a Big Three already in place. I don’t think anyone will really listen to this—least of all the guy who would really matter: Dwight—but they might be able to convince someone like Gerald Wallace to come…or give a big enough RFA offer to Nic Batum or Javale McGee to get them to come—hell, this is where Williams will probably be of the biggest value. An off season sign and trade to land Batum or McGee. My dream off season, outside of Dwight, is a sign and trade for Batum and a signing of Ray Allen. They’d instantly be a top 5 team in the West.)

I don't want to disrespect Williams, but we need to balance the roster.

He’s a 4. He may be a starting caliber 4 given the chance. We don’t need a starting caliber 4. We have an all-star 4 and holes at the 2,3 and 5.

Our 5’s don’t rebound well on the defensive glass. (Miller not included because he has logged a minute yet.

Our 3’s don’t average 3 FTA/36 or have a TS% north of .500

Our only 2 to play is being our performed by 2 PGs and has a sub 10 per over nearly 2900 career minutes.

I won’t lament about what could have been done, but when I’m hoping that a 35 year old center coming off of surgery, a second round pick who hasn’t played a NBA minute and is coming off his second surgery in the last 12 months and a career PER 11.7 and WS/48 .070 player coming off his second back surgery will make a sizable difference it’s been a tough road.

I agree entirely that...

Williams should be traded ASAP. However, who for? I have been looking for awhile now, and i just can’t come up with a trade that works.

I originally liked Gortat + Dudley, but with Morris doing well that ship has sailed.

I like Batum, and that might work, but I don’t see Portland doing it while they still see themselves competing.

The biggest problem is that there are simply too many good PFs.

So far my list of realistic moves is:

I think a realistic trade with the Kings

might not even involve Williams

I don’t know what the kings opinion of Marcus Thornton/Marcus Thornton’s contract is, but if they do have contract hang over he could be gotten for less than Williams

Thornton+Jason Thompson would be a target I’d look into.

by VoodooMagic on Jan 24, 2012 1:03 PM CST up reply actions

That's the rub. Okafur, McGee, Gortat and Gasol were in theory nice targets.

I always doubted Phx would part with Gortat, but thought he’d be an excellent target. I’m guessing that shipped sailed.

McGee is a less desirable target, but could in theory be a longer term answer at the 5 that can rebound. Washington seems committed to him.

Okafur could have been a target as the Hornets could really use a 4 and his salary is high, but things are complicate with the league running the show and them owning our pick.

Gasol seemed like and unlikely long shot if the Lakers wanted to make a big push to get under the tax line in the next couple years. He’s not going anywhere though until D12’s future is determined.

Another Scratch Ticket Suggestion

Even though I’m tired of scratch tickets, personally…but just to gauge the temperature, how would people feel about offering up either an expiring and/or second rounder(s) for Cole Aldrich? He had a decent (not-elite) enough pedigree as a prospect, and OKC simply doesn’t play him.

He potentially offers a skillset (defense, rebounding, low-usage on offense) that would be a nice fit with the Wolves, and OKC’s going to have to cut corners here and there to get all their keys players signed over the next year or two…

Moreover, his age and per-minute production (albeit in extremely limited minutes) suggest it might not be a total shock if he challenged Darko and Pek for minutes.

Plus, they’d be in Sid Hartman’s good graces!

Not ideal, but centers are hard to come by, and established ones are expensive.

From what I've seen

Williams is their best bet in terms of a guy you give the ball to and ask to score.

I know he looks awkward and has struggled at finishing a bit. But to me he looks like the best option on the current roster. His outside shot is good enough he has to be guarded on the perimeter. He has a decent enough (if awkward looking) handle to get to the lane. And he finishes strong, trying to dunk and often getting fouled. Lastly, he passes when nothing is there.

I’d like to see all Beasley’s touches go to Williams if they keep him. I’d also be fine telling him “We think you are a great young PF, and we want to send you to a team where you can thrive” and getting back a great young SG/SF.

by Wile E Coyote on Jan 24, 2012 11:47 AM CST up reply actions

I think the best bet

is to find a 5 and find a 2 that can compliment Williams/Love/Rubio

Williams and Love can absolutely co-exist offensively as their games are diverse enough where they will almost never get in each others way. Yet Williams gives you the (theoretical) inside scoring presence you need.

I don’t know what player you guys are watching, but offensively I’d actually argue he’s closer to being a 3 than he is a 4. Size wise he is a bear I get that…but the guy shoots three pointers and drives to the basket….he’s a 3 on offense. He doesn’t look overly comfrotable posting up true 4’s, but looks very comfortable posting up 3’s

But most of all he just looks comfortable facing the basket and operating from there. It’s a 3’s game on offense.

I don’t know what to think about him defensively. It looks like he gets lost on rotations, but in straight man situations…even at the 3 he doesn’t appear to be a terrible defender, he has a Drtg of 100 which I’m under the impression is fine.

I highly doubt we will be able to trade him for equal value of the player it appears he will be. That’s my opinion, happy to be wrong about that. So I’d prefer to try and make it work here with him and Love.

I’ve mentioned this trade a few times and I think it’s solid for a number of reason:http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=7akvgn9

Ty Thomas (while having a brutal season right now) would give us kind of that “can guard 3 positions” type of post player that I believe you need out of a 5 to make Love/Williams work and Henderson…while a broke shooter gives you another guy that has a reputation as a solid defensive 2 (however AS would tell a different story) and another guy that gets to the line a fair amount. (To be completely honest though I think Malcolm Lee has a chance to be a better Henderson)

Not that you just stop there with your 5 and 2 positions, but I think getting players like that to compliment the talent we have, to me, feels like the best bang for your buck.

…..I’ll take the paddle boat to my island to stand on now….

I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.

PS: Do you ever get the feeling

that Kahn is assembling the roster by starting with the bench? A lot of his acquisitions would be fine as a high quality bench guy (Tolliver, Luke, Webster). Acquiring starters? Not so much.

Maybe he thinks in terms of economics and value when he’s considering a Ramon Sessions, but not when he’s sizing up a draft pick.

If he was wrong about Beasley, Johnson & Webster, that’s one thing, but I’m sure he felt that he had addressed the situation with those acquisitions.

by Ray Williams? on Jan 24, 2012 12:22 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

That's fair, he used last offseason and did take active steps.

If anyone wants to know why this board was so colossally depressive two drafts ago, this is the answer. We went in with a war chest accrued over the long, long seasons after KG left, and came out with Martell (damaged as it turns out) and Wes Johnson. As of draft night, a huge swath of this board was full of people tearing out their hair over the letdown. We knew.

Beasley came after that; we didn’t know where LeBron and company were signing as of draft night.

"First, I'd like to blame the Lord for causing us to lose today."

by feral on Jan 24, 2012 2:36 PM CST up reply actions

If he had LeBron James and played him in one 14 minute stretch in the first half, and 23 minutes in the second, I still wouldn’t understand.

This has very little to do with the injuries. They had enough bigs. If they had made it close towards the end, Love would have played the entire second half.

The fact that the didn’t have 3s doesn’t fly as an excuse, Tolliver has been used in that role more than Williams has this season.

by Ray Williams? on Jan 24, 2012 12:19 PM CST up reply actions

I'll say again,
Any team that loses makes its fans say "I just don’t understand the coach’s rotations, they make no sense."

Go to any board for any team, and use the team’s current record and last win or loss as your yardstick. You’ll always get “What is up with these bizarre rotations?!?” for teams that are struggling. That’s not because in the losses, Rick Adelman loses his mind and runs everyone into the ground.

(If we’re going to talk about someone’s minutes, Love would be Exhibit A.)

You're right, I'm an idiot!

When they win, I totally think the rotations are completely logical! It’s not that I generally think it has been a problem and it specifically caused a severe issue in this game and directly led to the loss. But I agree, on a short-handed night with noone outside of Love doing much, it would have probably made sense to give him another run.

Right now I think Rick feels like he has very few players he can count on. You never know what you are going to get from some of the guys.

What is it about Anthony Randolph

He seems talented but for some reason can’t get it enough to get minutes. I know it would be a stretch to have him play SF, but seemingly less so than Derrick Williams. Considering AT didn’t really have it together tonite, I was suprised Randolph didn’t get more run

by midlife crisis on Jan 24, 2012 12:14 AM CST reply actions

Randolph really looks like he needs counseling.

I really wonder whether he has depression issues or something. No one’s natural expression should be that miserable.

by Madison Dan on Jan 24, 2012 9:08 AM CST up reply actions

My son said something similar last night

I’m not sure – as some people’s natural face ‘posture’ is just sad or mad looking when that is not their actual emotion. But he does really really unhappy.

My concern is more that he is like a lot of Wolves players. Not able to play above average ball for 3 games in a row.

I fear AR is like a lot of NBA bench guys. Long stretches of ‘meh’ basketball interrupted periodically with bursts of good play. We’ve seen it over and over again the past few season. Brewer has a good game – “He’s turned a corner!”. Eh – no he hasn’t. Ditto Pecherov, and Gomes, and Beasley, and AR, and Johnson, and …

This team needs fewer “high ceiling, low floor” guys and more “ceiling and floor both decent” guys.

I agree.

Some more consistency would really help us.

Randolph is just a mystery. He’s really good with that little jump hook, so good that I’d take some of the other boneheadedness that comes along with it. I wonder whether he costs himself minutes during practice as much as anything — it’s hard for me to guess how he relates to the team and coaches. Does anyone remember him looking happy after Love’s big shot? If he could at least smile and celebrate then, I’d feel a little better about his mental state.

by Madison Dan on Jan 24, 2012 9:35 AM CST up reply actions

I think the problem is that some of these guys

have a mental picture of “their game” and they are unwilling to change it even if it would help both them & their team.

I think A.R. views himself as really tall 3 or a perimeter 4. He likes to dribble and lead the break. He likes to shoot long jump shots are weird times. He seems unwilling to embrace a Marcus Camby “skinny center” role that he seems more likely to succeed in.

I think Darko views himself as a play-making big with a pleasing array of skilled finesse shots. He likes to pass and shoot hooks and scoop shots. He mentioned last year preferring his hooks to dunks because they required more skill. He seems unwilling to embrace a Kwame Brown defense + dunk C role that he would be more likely to exceed in.

I think Wes views himself as first and foremost an outside shooter. He lamented recently that his outside shot is not dropping which is “my bread and butter”. He seems unwilling to embrace the fact that he is a SF who shoots a low percentage and who needs to focus on attacking the basket with all that marvelous athleticism.

My opinion on Randolph

is he is the one guy that is pretty much locked in as a PF

he’s way to skinny to play 5 and, yeah he can shoot the ball well, but he doesn’t move the ball or play off the ball on the perimeter well enough to be a 3

regardless of your opinion of Williams, he can spot some time at the 3 and not kill the team, and Tolly can spot time at both the 3 and the 5 giving them opportunity to play with Love. Randolph can largely only play for Love.

good job

a few of my own admittedly not real basketball knowledged observations

-It seems to me Rubios shot not falling is getting to him a bit he is really pausing and thinking about taking them most of time there are times you can see him standing there with a wide open look and hes got this shit do I really have to shoot it look on his face. He also seemed like he was trying to press way to hard when all the turnovers happened, you must let the unicorn come to you not try to reign it in. Those negatives aside until the debacle at the end he was playing good defense and distributing well.

-Love was killing it shooting and driving but had a couple bad passes and a not so hot defensive night we really need a defensive big man to put beside him.

-Williams was decent but man he is awkward to watch weird drives and no outside threat I went back and watched some of his college highlight reel stuff and most of it (albeit a highlight film by definition) he was getting clean lanes or alley oops didnt see much of him actually posting anyone up or making to many moves hes not going to get a ton of easy looks in the nba and will need to find some of those abilities or at least be able to knock down jumpers to draw his man out some.

-Darko, Wayne-o, AR, Tolliver really didnt contribute much positively which is nothing new we need a 2 and big bad.

All in all disappointing game but not all that surprising going in with 9 players and no SF or competent SG please all the injured players get healthy already!

My English is not good enough :(

But if I were to do the report, I´d use a whole lot of Lord of the Ring analogies.

Adelman would be compared with Gandalf, Love with Aragorn, Ricky with Frodo, Barea with Sam and so on. Wesley might be Tom Bombadil, always happy, and full of potential that he does not use. Beasly, Boromir succumbing to the temptation of taking the game all by himself. Luke, Legolas with his fine shot. Darko might be an Ent, the kind depending on his performance… If some Wolves get phisically bullied some of the opposite players should be orcs saying: “Looks like meat’s back on the menu, boys.” You get the idea. Sadly I don´t have the tools nor the time.

Grades

Nice work. I like reading the report cards. I also don’t claim to be a stats guy but I would have graded a little harsher for Rubio, Darko and DWill. It seemed just weird to see Ricky make a few bad passes.

by 9flavors on Jan 24, 2012 8:23 AM CST reply actions

Waaaay too generous grades

- Playing 38 minutes, clearly, isn’t something Rubio is capable right now. We need to limit him to around 30-32. Most of his turnovers came at the end of the 3rd quarter, in which he played the full 12 minutes. Hed had no energy, no legs, and as a result made lazy passes, lazy turnovers etc.

- Rubio has been missing his first open J’s for the last several weeks. If he misses the second one, he totally loses confidence and starts to doubt himself and overthink throughout the game. He needs to get a comfort zone on the court, where he practices shooting 3x more than from any other spot, and that spot should be where he takes his first J. He would really benefit from learning a tear drop.

- DWill is slow and can’t dribble(or doesn’t know how keep his dribble alive)! His drives are horrific and don’t make any sense. In college, especially when he was tormenting my blue devils, he was too quick for our C/PF’s or too strong for SF’s. In NBA he’s playing too weak against PFs and too slow against SF’s. Needs to learn how to use his strengths and take advantage of mismatches.

- Darko needs dunks. Plain and simple. Adelman should just write “DUNK!!!” on his whiteboard. Sometimes I miss Rambis. Maybe if Darko gets a simple tattoo with “DUNK!!” written on it, he’ll remember to do that when he lifts his arms to try yet another finger roll.

- (Correct me if I’m wrong. Knowledge of the cap rules are not my strongest points) I hope Love doesn’t sign an extension. I hope he waits until we sign someone with the cap space we have in the summer, and then sign the extension, as we can go over the cap to sign our own players.

- Toliver, has sucked for the last 3 games. As much effort he gives, there is just not enough talent not just in offense but even in defense. Everybody’s just blowing by him.

- As I’ve said before, I’m really curious on how we’re going to integrate Big Easy, Webster, Lee, Brad Miller, and JJ.

From all the hoopla that went through, I would think the teams have more power than under previous CBA's

The window for other teams to offer Love contract that we can match and the window to start signing free agents start on the same day, I think. Since we can match any offer Love gets and get over salary cap, what prevents us from signing free agents beforehand with the salary cap? But then, what do I know

I've wondered about if..

….they could let him become an RFA, sign someone else to the granddaddy deal, and then hope that another team offers him a 5 year deal that they could match. Does this work? It sounds fishy as all hell but is it a way around having only 1 granddaddy deal? Could they time it in a way that works? Is it allowed? This way, the cap hold would be for his QA, right? (I don’t know. I’m just trying to find a way to look at it in a positive light if he doesn’t sign tomorrow.)

Way too lethargic start to the game.

I think this is a troubling trend. Seems like the Wolves have gotten off to poor starts practically the whole year. When Ricky was coming off the bench we’d get a shot of energy and competent play and the team would start to dig out. Now Ricky is starting so that bench boost is not there.

That was just an awful game. It’s good I didn’t give out the grades. Otherwise it would have been Love B (produced despite being sick), Luke D (some made shots but bad passes and bad D), and everyone else F. Could not stop the HOU guards at all. Turnovers like crazy, including stupid backcourt ones that are instant fast breaks going the other way. Forcing the ball into KLove in the post, where he holds it for 10 seconds a la Beasley. Stupid, stupid fouls where they hit a shooter a little bit causing a 3 point play. EITHER FOUL HARD ENOUGH SO THEY CAN’T SHOOT OR DON’T FOUL. Man, what is this high school?

Poor starts happen when you don't have a decent starting lineup.

When teams complain consistently about bad patches of games – “We play well for three quarters every night, we just gotta be consistent” – what it mostly means is that they’re outmatched in terms of talent so they aren’t consistent.

Or more simply: The Wolves don’t have starting-tier wing talent.

I think Adelman is doing a great job

But I wish he wasn’t constantly on the refs. Rambis never seemed to lobby for his players. Rick does it all the time. While this may be mildly helpful in a vacuum, it has resulted in the players doing the same. Love is the chief offender, but several other players whine incessantly about missed fouls, resulting in their man being wide open on the other end as play continues.

To sum it up, leave the whining to the coach, or whine during stoppages in play.

I agree on this point...

…but the calls seemed lopsided in the first half. Wolves were taking it hard to the basket (two-handed), drawing contact and not getting calls. On the other end, Houston was getting much more ticky-tack fouls given to them. Seemed to throw the Wolves off.

Oh I agree - there were some bad calls

But the question is what leads to winning games? Stopping every time to talk with the ref about it? Picking your spots? Doing it during stoppages in play?

I would posit that arguing during a live ball situation is quite often two free points for the other team. And I’m not sure a ref who is getting constantly barked at is more likely to give you the call next time.

I personally think Utah and Memphis do the right thing

They play really physically and aggressively. Causes a lot of turnovers and I’d guess you break even at least in terms of calls. Officials tend to favor the aggressive team vs. the passive one. You need the right personnel though. That is where a guy like Tony Allen really helps.

Watching Memphis in the playoffs last year

I loved their physical play, and when the fouled they made it count. I don’t remember seeing anybody getting a 3 point play against them with the way they fouled.

Their hyper-aggressive defense is awesome. Tony Allen is a great fit for that, he punches his teammates on planes, that’s hyper aggressive.

Like I said,

I agree with you. Let Adelman ride the refs. That’s his job and he needs to make that clear to Love et al that he’ll worry about working the refs.

Maybe I’m way off because their weren’t many replays, but it looked to me like the Wolves started out physical and aggressive last night and were not getting rewarded for it. They were missing layups because they were getting hit with no calls. Kevin Martin was going to the line for being bumped and throwing his arms in the air.

The schedule is skewed a ton this year.

They took almost all the lost games out of inter-conference play.

Teams play 48 games in conference – just 4 less than in a usual season. They only see 18 games against the other conference, though. Usually there are 30 of those, which is enough for every team to visit every other team’s home arena once.

In a regular season

Western Conf teams like MIN play every Eastern Conf team twice: once at home and once on the road. The remaining games are all vs. West Conf foes, with a few extra vs. divisional foes I believe.

In this truncated season, there are some Eastern Conf teams we only play once.

It is a pretty big advantage to be in the east. There are tons of terrible teams.

impressions...

Absolutely let Adelman do the ref riding. Love has been watching too many MJ tapes, and he lacks Jordan’s quicks to get back into the play afterwards. He deserves a voice, but please, do it during breaks. Kevin is a stalwart, no doubt, but RA is paid to look pained and make noise.
Ricky looked tired at times and was pressing. ‘Course that might also be a partial reaction to guys missing wide open shots he’s set them up for. That’s got to be mentally draining. Let him spend the next three practices shooting. Just shooting.
DWilliams had some of the most awkward drives to the rim I’ve ever seen. It was embarrassing. Get him into a ballet class, quick!
Is it my imagination or has Luke thrown more behind the back passes in the last four games or so than he did all last season? I’m not sure that’s a good thing. I think it scares his teammates when he does it. For white guys flair is almost directly associated with your hair cut/facial hair. Luke’s suggests more… hay baling, buying gingham at the general store for EmmyLou, camp fires, flannel shirts and mayonnaise. He should maybe stick to two hand chest passes and shooting the lights out.
Speaking of scaring your teammates I think that’s why AR doesn’t smile.
Darko is a mystery. Wrapped in an enigma. Encompassed by a… well, I don’t know. He’s like those Russian nesting dolls where the inner ones have energy and talent but all we see is the box on the shelf. Someone needs to piss him off before every game. Maybe tell him draft position jokes.
We really need the firepower from the sick room. Miller’s talents have waned but he’s high bbIQ. He might even actually expect the pass from Ricky in the lane. Barea can energize things, less so in civies. Getting him back will be huge. He’s got chutzpah (the good kind) and some flair (note the haircut) Plus you’d have to think that MB will work in more smoothly than some expect. At least if he can read. I have very high hopes for him. Dude was a man among boys in college. How did that invert? Still, high hopes. Possibly Martell’s readvent will light a fire under Wes. (who should be right next to Ricky practice shooting and work with AR on that smiling thing) I look forward to these things.
I gotta say though that all in all this is a fun team to watch. I’ll keep doing that.

Wes made Hollinger's 2011-12 All-Disappointment Team
For the fourth overall pick, Johnson has been a crushing disappointment. While he’s a decent wing defender and has suffered from playing out of position as a shooting guard in Minnesota, the underlying big picture is that he’s a role player at best.

Johnson is already 24 and is neither an elite athlete nor an elite shooter; he’s emphatically proving that latter point at the moment by shooting 12-of-48 on 3-pointers. Meanwhile he’s earned 10 free throws the entire season and has a shockingly high turnover rate for a secondary offensive player. I’m sure he’s a better player than he’s shown thus far, but I’m equally sure the Timberwolves should have drafted Greg Monroe or Paul George.

by Madison Dan on Jan 24, 2012 1:25 PM CST reply actions

I might disagree with him that Wes isn't an elite athlete,

I think he just doesn’t play aggressively enough to show what he’s got. The rest sounds about right to me.

by Madison Dan on Jan 24, 2012 1:28 PM CST up reply actions

while highlight videos are well defined

Aren’t they fun to watch? I agree I don’t think athetisism is an issue here.
Wes should be on the all dissapointment team for his first 10 games, but to me when he says “suffered from playing out of position” it is a summation.

Yeah, everybody's a 100 percent shooter on a highlight reel.

Wes gives little glimpses of being OK, particularly with some nice passes (just one or two of those in this highlight reel).

by Madison Dan on Jan 24, 2012 3:23 PM CST up reply actions

Disagree

It’s only a disappointment if you expected more than that from Wes.
The crushing disappointment was draft night.

by rickyp on Jan 24, 2012 2:24 PM CST up reply actions

Much as I disagree with Hollinger at times...

It’s hard to argue his logic here. (though I agree with MD about the athlete thing) At the time it was the popular choice, and Minnesota would’ve caught a bunch of flack for not picking him. George, or especially Monroe (really liked him coming out) are both good “wish it hadda been” material. C’est la vie. Wes isn’t done yet though, not by a long shot. (no pun intended) Maybe we just need to keep the faith. Still, Monroe with Darko off the bench? (sigh)

Depressing Game

I just felt lousy all-around about this one.

1. The Ridnour-Luke backcourt was completely outplayed.

2. Wayne couldn’t hit a thing on a night we really needed him.

3. Derrick Williams is not a 3, but isn’t much of a post player either.

4. Tolliver is flying below the radar but he is basically unplayable at this point.

5. Darko wasn’t terrible but it’s a huge indictment that Adelman doesn’t trust him to exploit matchups against undersized power forwards like Patterson.

6. Adelman made a rare strategic mistake by not having Darko cover Scola to start the game. He switched to it after half and we had a good third quarter. We need to keep Darko on the better 4/5 every night to save Love’s legs and Darko plays better against better players.

7. The crowd seemed way too quiet all night.

I think we ought to spend some time evaluating trades. This bird won't fly, and Adelman

can’t fix broke. No one else can, for that matter. We have some players who have clearly regressed from last year, and others that have been playing to their usual level of mediocrity. A new system, whatever it is, hasn’t fixed it. Only new faces can.

Right now Ricky’s talent is being wasted. He passes to guys that are in great position only to end up losing an assist because our guys can’t get the ball in the hoop. It’s got to be frustrating for the kid.

Fun to read the comments.

Fair criticism that I graded too high. I think that had I given this game a night to (in)digest before posting I would have lowered them a bit.

The difficulty for me with evaluating this team is that we have so few players who are clearly deserving of minutes at the professional level and most to the ones we do are very limited.

luke can shoot but can’t defend, Pek shows flashes of but makes dumb mistakes, Randolph is weird and Ellington is only useful when he is hitting shots (something Madison Dan showed us we can’t reasonably expect).

Two of our other two real looking pro players are rookies and, as such, are going to make rookie mistakes. I think that may even be why they call them that.

Even our super star is limited in that he is best playing off what is happening around him.

This all makes our beloved Wolves difficult to fully assess other than to say simply that they are still not a playoff team but finally may be heading in that direction.

We need more players Mr Kahn.

Why I want to keep Williams

“Even our super star is limited in that he is best playing off what is happening around him.”

This is ultimately why I don’t want to trade Williams unless it’s for a Gordon/Harden type player (which admittedly might be shooting a bit high), the player Williams ability suggests he could be come is the exact type of player Love NEEDS. He needs a guy to drive the ball relentlessly, get to the free throw line and hit open jumpers…all while having a smart basketball head on his shoulders and plays within his game.

Will Williams be this player ultimately? It remains to be seen, he has shown the ability to be able to drive, but finishing has been an issue. It feels like finishing is something that is fixable…but maybe it’s not and he’ll always have this flaw about him…but if he can get up too speed with the NBA he absolutely represents the player Love needs and Rubio needs.

I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.

by VoodooMagic on Jan 24, 2012 6:56 PM CST up reply actions

I too am hopeful

about Williams and am not in a hurry to trade him away just to fill out our roster better. Maybe he can become the player you describe and maybe he will be more of a banging four with some shooting. I don’t see the harm in finding out. We aren’t going anywhere this year anyway.

I really think the road map to success is for Love to sign and improve his all around skills, Rubio to turn out slightly better than Love and for us to find a creative wing player who is the third best player on the team. Maybe we end up trading Williams for that guy but he isn’t worth that to anyone yet.

I agree that it would probably be worth trading for him Gordon or Harden. Still, Gordon’s injuries scare me and I can’t imagine OKC or NO giving up either guy for a rookie with lot and lots of big ifs.

by SlowBreak on Jan 24, 2012 7:42 PM CST up reply actions

Sure thing

I hate to be the guy that pimps out the 2nd round pick….but Malcolm Lee has a lot of skill. Assuming he comes back before we acquire a 2, I think he might end up turning some heads and taking that job.

He’s like a more athletic, better ball handling Gerald Henderson….little less strong though. Not a super star, but I think he’s a guy who can help and be a quality player. I’ve liked him since UCLA, pumped to watch him play.

My problem with figuring out Williams is I agree he isn’t a 3 in the most natural sense…but I don’t see anyway someone can watch him play basketball and be like “he’s a four” the guy is more comfortable facing up and on the perimeter than he is in the post (unless he’s posting up a 3) and it actually appears to me that he is more comfortable defensively guarding a more perimeter oriented player than he is a low post guy.

I was told once by SnP about Kevin Love that I need to just accept the fact that he is a weird sort of superstar, and not one in the more normal sense but he is a superstar non-the-less. And I actually agree with that and think it’s an excellent take.

I wonder if we need to start accepting Williams for who he is an not criticizing him for who he isn’t. He’s just a player with an odd game that isn’t very comparable. He’s a pure scorer in the body of an averaged sized PF with very good but not elite-level athleticism. I’ve always felt maybe a more accurate comparison might be a bigger Corey Maggette with a better shot and good head on his shoulders….but again it’s not a great comp cause there just haven’t been to many guys in his mold.

If he goes to a team to play 4 that team (or us if we end up having to move Love) is going to have to adjust it’s roster anyway to compensate for the fact that Williams isn’t a true 4 either….but if he’s productive and can score he is absolutely worth the trouble of adjusting the roster. (to bring it full circle, I think Lee could be a very ideal 2 to play with Williams and Love as he appears to be good enough defensively and rangy enough to bring good defense to the backcourt)

As long as he doesn’t bust (which it doesn’t appear he is going to) can’t hurt to figure out what we got, whether he can do enough to fill the 3 spot on the team even if that isn’t exactly the kind of player he is.

I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.

I wonder

if I can convince my wife that I am just a weird sort of superstar.

by SlowBreak on Jan 24, 2012 8:09 PM CST up reply actions

Is it weird that by the end I hated KG for what he couldn't do

And yet I kind of love what Love can do and don’t care about what he can’t? That’s totally not fair, but that’s how I feel.

Nice post, SlowBreak.

Ricky brings a lot of excitement, but

the hopes for this team seem a little bit high given the disappointment expressed by a majority of the Houston post-game comments. I heard a lot about this being Ricky’s worst game, which may be true, but Ricky had a 3-1 assist to turnover ratio in this game if you don’t count the 2-hand shove that Lowry delivered to cause one of his turnovers(and I don’t—terrible non-call, with a great “what was that?” shouted out from someone courtside that was clearly audible on TV). A 7-10 record for the youngest team in the league is impressive(could be 8-9 if Ellington passed to the wide open Kevin Love for a 3-point winner at the buzzer vs. Miami). More impressive is getting decent defense(with some notable exceptions) from a team that has very few solid defenders. Rubio is suprisingly good, bordering on excellent. Wes has good length to impact shots. As they mature, the shooting and defense will improve. I don’t agree with all of Adelman’s lineups or substitution patterns, but overall, he has this team playing vastly better than the 3 prior seasons. The Rockets game was the worst loss of the season, but they are a good team and we were short-handed. McHale has also shown that he’s more capable as a coach than as a GM. Looking forward, I hope we can replace Beasley’s contract with help at the 2 or 5 and make a big jump next season given an offseason to implement the offense and focus on team defense. Still believe Wolves could win 26 to 33 games this year, and although that will not make the playoffs in the West, things could be worse—we could be Wizards fans and be subjected to coach Randy Wittman for the remainder of the season!

to go from Flip to Wittman! I can’t imagine the horrors that that young team will have to endure….
