Broussard's *Hypothetical* Trade: Beasley for Prince
Broussard lists five hypothetical trades, including a straight swap of Beasley and Tayshaun Prince. I would do that in a heartbeat from the Wolves' angle, but what says Detroit?

I dunno
He of course torched us
But he is shooting 0.415 and ripping down 3.2 boards. He’ll is signed through 2014-15 when he’ll be making $7,707,865 is a 33/34 years old.

Wow - a real typo storm there
Just to clarify he is 31 right now. Will be mid-thirties by end of contract.

Plus
Detroit JUST signed him to a four-year extension. Not nearly enough time has gone by for them to regret that contract yet.
No thanks
That contract and his steep decline in production are worrisome. He’d be better than Beasley off the bat, so there’s that, but that’s money that could be better spent in the off season. And this is coming from a win-now guy. Here’s what I’d like to see, post-haste: sign and trade for Batum. Anyone not named Love or Rubio could be used. I’m look

Yep
And you actually wonder if Portland would do it. It has some advantages for them: they have years of Williams on a rookie deal, while Batum needs to get paid now. Also, it makes them somewhat bigger, which they need. On the other hand, similar problems in that they already have an all-star PF.
I've changed my sig. The Wolves are now like a reasonably decent meal.

Fortunately that all star power forward...
….plays center half the time, since Camby and Kurt Thomas are a combined 180 years old
Tell the Blazers they could field an Aldridge/Williams/Wallace frontcourt and you’ll get their attention.
That is actually a pretty fun frontcourt.
Flawed, but I don’t think any other team would be chomping at the bit to go up against Aldridge/Williams/Wallace.
They're getting 40mpg out of Camby and Thomas
which means that with LMA playing 36 per game (10 at C) there’s 22 minutes at PF available for Williams, if they think he could be a 3/4 tweener that (plus the salary) might be enough to justify the trade.
And with Camby and Thomas being 37 and 39
it helps “future proof” the team a bit.
This makes too much sense
Unfortunately, the marketing department (Kahn) sees those pretty alley oops to Williams from Rubio and probably values those as much as winning in terms of putting buts in the seats.
Michael Beasley is a Small Forward. Derrick Williams is a Power Forward.
Ouch - it hurts because it's (likely) true

really?
because this myth makes it easier to accept he’s made big mistakes…and one big franchise making trade?

In one of the weird convergences...
….of long and athletic and actual production, I can 100% assure you that Kahn loves him some Batum. 100% guaranteed.
Question is...
…does he love him enough beyond Wes Johnson/Martell Webster/Michael Beasley to get serious about him? I’d hope he does, but who knows? I think Love/Rubio/Batum could be the best “big 3” in team history, and Love would be the old man of the group.
Kahn has actually been rumored to be after Batum more than once, right?
IIRC, there was talk for the #4 pick 2 years ago, possibly the #2 pick last year, and I think for Love when he was being shopped.
“When Batum becomes a restricted free agent, we’ll look at the other 29 teams before we talk to the Blazers,” Batum’s agent Bouna Ndiaye told CSNNW.com. “The Blazers had their chance.”
No deal for Blazers and Batum
7:33AM ET
Nicolas Batum | Trail Blazers
The Portland Trail Blazers and Nicolas Batum’s agent have been negotiating for a couple of weeks, but they couldn’t agree on the numbers for an extension by Wednesday’s deadline.
Batum’s agent says he will shop his client when free agency begins in the summer.
“They say they love him but they didn’t offer him something fair, so that’s it,” Bouna Ndiaye told The Oregonian. “We tried and there’s no deal. On July 1 we’re going to look at the market first before we come back to the Blazers. That’s for sure.”
Batum will be a restricted free agent, which means the Blazers have the right to match any offer sheet the small forward might sign with another team.
“In no way does any of this reflect on how we feel about Nic, it’s just part of business,” Blazers interim GM Chad Buchanan said. “We love Nic and we’ve told him that. But a deal has got to be fair for both sides.”
wow time to offer them a deal for Batum
Ridnour + Pek (~$8mil salary) gives them 2 quality backups and we get RFA rights while keeping Williams to deal for someone else.
Where do you guys get your sources and info? Janitors at TC? Ticket reps who know too much?

What do you think about
DWill for Evan Turner? ET looks better this year on offense and he seems to be very solid on defense. He’d give us a fighting chance to at least slow down some of these wings who keep lighting up Wes and Luke. If we had ET, I’d probably keep starting Luke at the 2 for his shooting, with ET at the 3.
I don't know why Philly would trade anyone right now
They’re pretty good and they just signed the prior version of Williams (Thad Young—athletic huge forward) to a new deal.
Also not sure how he'd fit with Rubio
He can’t shoot from outside and his production at OSU was based on him having the ball a lot.
Philly Announcers make a point of this a lot in the games I've watched
how the ball stops when Turner gets it and how the offense just flows so much smoother, e.g., no isolation play, when Turner doesn’t have the ball. That being said, he has looked good with the ball, especially in transition.
I agree with you though, we probably shouldn’t look at one of the best teams in the league as a potential trade partner, especially if we are looking at their rotation players.
Michael Beasley is a Small Forward. Derrick Williams is a Power Forward.
(this applies to my pie in the sky hopes for batum, too)
;)
I don’t know where they think they’re getting a good player to come here outside of a trade. Gerald Wallace is going to go play for a team that can win. Howard and D-Will are going to big markets. Kirk Hinrich? Ugh. I do think the sign and trade with Williams is their best shot. I’m hoping they put him to good use.
Granger?
Indiana is doing well, but Granger has fallen off, so there’s a tiny chance he could be had. Pretty pricey upgrade, though.
That would be interesting
On one hand, he’s been below average for over a year now and his contract is large enough to allow him to build an actual bat cave. On the other hand….well, I don’t think I could talk myself into Granger. He’d be an upgrade over what they have right now (and what they’ll likely have in Webster), but oi, that’s a lot of money for not a lot of production.
Yikes, he looks worse under WP/48 than WS/48.
I haven’t seen him play lately, but I could see getting him if we thought he could get back to his previous levels (versus just being cooked due to age / minutes). We’re more likely to get a guy if he’s not playing his best, and this might be a “buy low” candidate. But yeah, expensive and average (at best) production doesn’t get my heart racing.
Hmmm,
I looked at some data for him, and mostly looks like his problem is just a shooting slump. His shot locations are a little worse, but the bigger problem by far is his FG% at each location. The other numbers are a mixed bag (e.g., rebounding is down, but so are turnovers, etc.).
Just given that, he sounds kind of appealing. More disturbing is that he hasn’t had any 14-game stretches over the previous two seasons that were this bad (in terms of TS%). The worst last year was 0.480 (he’s at 0.463 now). The previous year, he never got below 0.512. So maybe the new lows he’s setting for himself indicate that something is broken.
That would be my general feeling too
Seems like I’ve read a lot of articles over the last year or two talking about how “When Granger is healthy/snaps out of his shooting funk, the Pacers will be a force to be reckoned with.”
Not to mention that he played some PF under the previous coach.

That would be a concern
and that’s why I think you’d almost have to look at him as a Wes Johnson upgrade. ET wouldn’t be a perfect fit, but he’s better than Wes.
Agreed, Batum is preferrable. There's no question about that.
In fact, there are a lot of semi-realistic targets I would prefer to Prince.
Any insight as to how the Adelmans would feel about Batum? We know Kahn likes him. Also, have we not discussed how much the Rockets and 76ers recent success hurts the Wolves as far as any chance there might have been to land Martin or Iggy?
Dunno
(Also, what’s up with Martin? He’s not playing very well. His shooting is way down and he’s not getting to the line. I’d be worried about him at this point.)
Did you see Zgoda's tweet
questioning if he would take Martin over Wes? I thought it must be sarcasm, but I’m not sure it was.
He also said a couple of days ago that he would never trade Beasley for Ray Allen. A little more defensible, but there’s no way he takes Wes over Martin, right?
No, he's had a string of a few interesting ones lately
He never did respond to the tweet about him saying that Wes and Wayne were close to signing their team options.
Yeah, his takes have been weird.
Twitter thread is below.

@JerryZgoda how could you still POSSIBLY not want Kevin Martin on this team? Instant playoff team.

Jerry Zgoda @Djr57108 Really? Tough call…
Sorry for the formatting,
but you get the idea.
I can hear the argument that Martin's game is in decline and he has a big contract...
….and that this would be the reason to not want him, but straight up saying it is a tough call as a matter of production is just ridiculous. Oi.
Yeah, the contract/age is the only hesitation,
although a couple years of even declining production from where he is now would be huge. I mean, its almost the opposite of what the Wolves have needed for years. It used to be that nobody could get to the basket, and they just need spot up shooters to allow Rubio/Barea to kick the ball to and Love to pass to out of the high post.
Martin is welcome to stand outside the arc and spot up for two years at $12 million a year. The Wolves need that kind of shooting production that badly.
Andre is an interesting situation ...
It doesn’t seem like the Sixers would be willing to break up their team when playing so well, but he’s got a very large contract and their young guys (Holiday, Turner, Young) are given room to play better when he’s not in. basketballvalue.com actually says that he has a negative net +/- and a negative adjusted +/- this season.
On the other hand he is an elite passer, defender and rebounder for his position. His usage rate has gone down for three straight seasons and his shooting has improved this year.
Would be interesting to see if some combination of Beasley, Wes and Williams would be enough for him.
90% agree but....
I don’t think Portland are in a position to demand Williams in a trade for Batum.
Can ESPN trade Chris Broussard
for Steve Aschburner?
Broussard’s a tebow believing grade AAA clown.

I like Aschburner
He was polite to me once when I was in a room full of people who were working very hard to pretend I wasn’t there.
Yo ho ho and a FirstRow stream!
Pass the Mayo
What about Beasley for Mayo? One of his other hypothetical trades had Mayo going to Cleveland for Boobie Gibson and Casspi.
Beasley doesn't seem to fit well in Memphis, though.
They have Gay/Randolph at the 3 and 4. Don’t think they’d be interested in Beasley.
Otherwise, this would also be preferrable to Prince.
Mayo seems to be playing the best ball of his career and I doubt that they'd trade him now, I could be wrong though.
He seems to be the perfect fit off the bench for them, especially with Z-bo being out, he can give them a little extra needed scoring.
Honestly I'd probably go for it
I don’t recall exactly but isn’t Prince making roughly $8mil/year for four years? That’s a lot for a declining player but I think it’s still a huge upgrade. It’s absolutely a last resort way below anything that would net us Batum, Okafor, Gordon, ET or just about anything else discussed on this site but … ahh very tough call, but I think I go for it because I have no faith in Kahn/Taylor to target the right players and at least this one improves the team.
