Trade targets and 2012 restricted free-agents
The Wolves are just a couple of games shy of .500 and they've already played just over a quarter of the 66 games scheduled for the 2011-2012 season. The majority of the team's 7 losses were winnable and the outcome wasn't decided until the last few possessions. It's fair to say that a team that has played the majority of it's games this season with only two above average players (Love and Rubio) and has received competent play from at best two other players (Ridnour and Williams... JJ and Beasley, if you wan't to make the argument that he is a serviceable scorer). Suffice to say, with one additional above average player the team could have easily split those seven losses and be on the plus side of a .500 record.
It would appear as if Kahn is taking a "wait and see" approach to the roster; that is, he is waiting to see how Brad Miller, Webster, JJ, and Beasley integrate into Adleman's rotation before he makes any small or drastic roster moves. I suppose it is possible that with the addition of these four players that the Wolves' second unit will be improved enough to transform close losses into wins. That being said, with just a little help the team is on the verge of being a serious contender for the 8th playoff spot and it might make more sense to package a couple of those players and trade for players that will be restricted free agents this summer.
Players such as OJ Mayo, Gerald Henderson, Mickael Pietrus, Ray Allen, James Anderson, Courtney Lee, Robin Lopez, Javale McGee, Roy Hibbert, and Omer Asik will be restricted free agents this summer. In the summer, I'd love to see the Wolves sign any big man/ wing tandem from this list. However, in the cases of Henderson, McGee, and Hibbert... their respective current teams' will likely match any offer they sign in the summer with another team. It's possible Minnesota could trade for them now and in the case of Hibbert, the team should consider including DWill in a trade package.
At the very least, I have to imagine that if the Wolves were able to move a package comprised of a combination of pieces including players such as Wesley Johnson, Williams, Pekovic, Beasley, Ridnour, Webster, and even the #1's owed to Minnesota by Utah and Memphis that the Wolves could pick up Gerald Henderson/Manther. Or the players could be used in a couple of deals to net players like Omer Asik (Gatdamn... he'd be perfect next to Love!), James Anderson, Mayo, or Robin Lopez.
Here's to hoping that Kahn is looking to be proactive and is looking for deals that will push the Wolves into the playoffs this season.

There are good restricted free agents out there but realistically how much trade value do you think Beasley, Johnson, Pekovic, Ridnour, or Webster really have? From my perspective Ridnour and Beasley have the most trade value but still they probably wouldn’t net us much.
Skoaldybi, because there’s a good chance the team would only be renting the player (unless of course, they could work out a sign-and-trade), trading for a restricted shouldn’t cost as much as trading for a player without an expiring contract.
Despite his poor play, Wesley Johnson could be included in a package comprised of Ridnour and/or Pekovic or Beasley and Utah’s #1, that might be very attractive to teams such as Memphis, Chicago, Washington, Portland, Boston, Orlando, etc…

I'd still like to see us take a chance on Mayo...
supposedly Memphis is looking for a first rounder in any deal…I would gladly trade that Utah pick along with Wes to see if Mayo fits next to Rubio.

so would I
maybe a change of scenery along with the chance to start and rubio assists would help oj realize all that potential so many saw in him years ago.

I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.
Me too, I think Mayo would fit perfectly next to Rubio. He’s a decent shooter, he can handle the ball and can adequately create his own shot, he has a good basketball IQ, and previously had the reputation (or, at least, was regarded as having the potential to develop into) as being a good defender. Prior to the 2008 draft, I remember reading that Mayo and Love were friends. I think there’s a good chance that if the Wolves traded for Mayo that he’d be willing to resign with the team.
Damn, combining Mayo trade with a trade or signing for Asik would be pretty gatdang ideal for the Wolves. Depending on who’d they’d have to give up and I think it’s feasible that trades with Memphis and Chicago comprised of a combination of Luke Ridnour, Michael Beasley, Wesley Johnson, Nikola Pekovic, and/or the #1’s owed to MN by Memphis and Utah (or even a future #1 from Minnesota), these moves could yield a potential line up that is 8-9 men deep, along the lines of:
C- Asik/Darko
PF- Love/Randolph
SF- Webster/Williams
SG- Mayo/Ellington/Lee
PG- Rubio/JJ/Lee
But then someone offers Mayo
4/$30MM and you’ve just given up a first rounder for a lost half a season, or you overpay. OJ Mayo isn’t a true difference maker. He’d be a solid piece, perhaps, but he’ll likely be too expensive when that one dumb team gives him a big offer sheet.
You can't...dust...for vomit.
Honestly which one of those guys would it really hurt us to lose?
I’d like to keep Ridnour and Pek but if Beas and Johnson actually get us half a season of competent play I’d be pretty happy.
Hate to say it
but I think we might as well keep Johnson. The faint glimmer of hope that he can be a solid off-the-ball player is probably more valuable than the top 50 protected pick we could get for him
I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.
except that he costs $4mil this year and takes up a roster spot
which could potentially help us make a deal for one of the bigger salary guys who might at some point be available (i.e. Okafor / Gordon). Getting an open roster spot means that if nothing else we can sign D-league players to 2 week contracts and try them out.
Wilson Chandler
Do you guys think there is any possibility that Kahn might be looking to sign him?
He will be available as a restricted free agent at some point in March as he will finish his season in China. He’s not really that great of a shooter, but he can knock down a few threes. He’s a decent defender and hits the boards at a good clip. He was playing really well on the Knicks until they traded him for Melo. He’d be an interesting option at the 2 or the 3 at 6’8. I wonder what his market value is.
No idea on his market value
but I think he’s a great target for us.
He would be a fantastic add
I’ve got to assume that a lot of other teams would be interested as well, but if we can open up a roster spot and he has any interest in playing with Rubio and Love, then I would think we could be competitive in attempting to acquire his services.
Extra SF Target?
What do you guys think about trying to trade for Renaldo Balkman from NY? He basically sits the bench but he would offer great defense & rebounding at the 3/4 as well as being low usage on offense. Come to think of it he would basically play the same role as Tolliver without the 3 point shooting but if we could dump a salary we don’t want (i.e. Johnson) we could fill out our bench and perhaps open up a roster spot to trade for a more expensive player Okafor/Gordon/Batum.
Now that the chance to sign extensions has passed can teams still sign and trade players such as Batum?
comparison with Tolliver
worse on offense, better on D. 82games indicates he has even played some spot minutes at the 2.
Another SF idea
Since Kahn likes to gamble on potential, we could see if Utah wants to deal us Jeremy Evans (Kudos to Wages of wins for pointing out his stats). He’s another low usage extremely high TS%. The main problem is he has played very few minutes but he has 523 career minutes with a .686% TS% , 12.2TR% he looks like someone worth spending a 2nd round draft pick on in case he can play some SF at a reasonable efficiency for us.
