Impressions from at the Game

As a Wolves fan living in Texas, I had the chance to watch the game live. I haven't had much of a chance to read much on the game, so here are a few unprocessed thoughts on the game:

1. Ricky Rubio is a machine. He was the only man on the team who could handle the ball. Dallas rotated defenders on him, pressed him toward the end of the game, double-teamed and trapped. Yet he remained poised and played a great game. He got his hands on a lot more balls than the 4 steals reflects.

2. Wayne Ellington is our best option at SG. He played capable defense, was competent shooting, and did a nice job taking the ball to the hoop. Until Webster beats him out, he should remain our starting SG.

3. Love's pick on <insert name of small, pesky Dallas defender> that put him on the floor was huge. The guy had been pestering Rubio, and Love wanted Rubio to know that he had his back. Love had been trying to set up a hard screen for several possessions - and he got it!

We played a great game!

Yeah. It's subtle, but it's there.

I only got to see the SC highlights, but that was awesome. (There I go with that word again . . .)

They will throw Pek in jail if he does that...he might kill someone.

Actually

as I remember it, the Dallas announcers did think it was Pek. And wasn’t the Dallas player Mo Williams?

Sorry

brain fart (watched the Clips-Lakers afterwards). I meant it was Beaubois who got flattened.

It was Beaubois

The fact he flattened a Frenchman made it all the sweeter.

Flattening a Frenchman

has to be right up there with winning a tipoff against Verne Troyer on the list of accomplishments, really.

SHUT IT DOWN! LET'S GO HOME!

Dirk got his wish. The Mavs got shut down and were sent packing by the Wolves.

Yeah

that was a nice pie in the face moment. I was thinking at the time that if anything would motivate us….

I think you raised an interesting question

Could martell play SG?

Both he and Lee might end up being or two best wing options when they get back…but since we are in theory deep at forward it would benefit this team greatly if martell could play 2

Also Wayne was the MVP of that game. Taking nothing away from love and rubio’s monster nights but I think we lose that game without Wayne playing as well as he did

Yeah, ignore Ricky Stepping up to play 46 minutes as the only available PG

Dismiss Love’s 31 pts on 16 shots as expected, and forget about Darko stepping up with His 7 blocks, and I guess Wayne pouring in 16 pts on 5-15 shooting can garner game MVP accolades.

by dropstep on Jan 26, 2012 9:08 AM CST up reply actions

Who said anything about ignoring

Without Wayne the fantastic efforts of those three people would have gone to waste.

Kid was +19 and played excellent basketball all night. He stepped up at a position of weakness for us and even gave Rubio a breather (which in itself may have won the game so Rubio wasn’t completely burnt out to start the 4th)

But you could play the "if he didn't..." game for everyone

It was a great team win, but to single out Wayne as an MVP, over all these guys who played their butts off, you have to be rewarding low expectations.

But Wayne also "played his butt off"

It’s not like Wayne isn’t part of this group? He played 40 minutes too, and looked like a starting SG for one night.

Love and Rubio played great. I don’t see how I’m taking anything away from them, I would imagine if you asked them about Wayne they would say the same thing I said “without Wayne we wouldn’t have won that game”

Wayne stepped up. I’m not saying he’s the best player on the team, but for one game I think he was most valuable.

You take Love off the team and we lose everynight. He’s the MVP of the team, but even with him we needed the extra Wayne to beat the Mavs.

Wayne’s performance, whether it’s because we aren’t counting on it every night or not, to me was the most valuable performance of the night, cause we need that so badly.

It's not like Love and Ricky are short of attention

Wayne has largely played really well and even did so when he didn’t shoot overtly well last night. I say give the brother some love too. He’s part of this “team win” which I agree with

16 points of 15 shots is not really praiseworthy...

I appreciate Wayne coming in and not completely blowing it when we had nobody else to play 2-guard, but he is a loose bandage on the bleeding.

I will cease my part in this

I stand by my comment, if I continue to get ripped for it that’s cool. I may deserve it.

at least last night Wayne played pretty good all-around ball, and I’d argue his shooting was the worst aspect of his game.

If Ricky wasn't playing

we would have lost by 30.

Wayne was part of the group.

I argued that it was a great team win. I never set up any one player as MVP. I didn’t start down this road. What I did do was suggest was that if you wanted to play that game (and there really was no good reason to) pulling Wayne out of the mix was a questionable choice.

by dropstep on Jan 26, 2012 12:00 PM CST up reply actions

While I may not pick him for MVP

Wayne’s impact goes beyound the box score shooting numbers in this one, much like overlooking Rubio’s 7 Turnovers. I am not a huge Ellington fan, but he stepped up for this one. He played better defense than we usually see from him and he had an impressive ZERO turnovers in 40 minutes. While Rubio and Love are more valuable, Wayne’s efforts in this game were very solid. I’ll agree with the great team win, as I wrote last night, because there were a lot of great efforts in this one. If I had to pick 1 person that most contributed to this Wolves victory with a standout performance, I might go with Lamar Odom. What he did to kill the Mavericks offense was downright mind-blowing!

Two initial things are contagious in basketball

Passing and defense.
And they lead to the third stage of basketball contagium…winning.
