Awesome Trade Idea!

Since a certain someone on this site has been openly lusting for Batum, I thought I would try to come up with a reasonable trade for him. Not sure they would want Williams straight up, but what if we did the following:

Star-divide

T-wolves get: Nicolas Batum, Robin Lopez

Suns get: Derrick Williams, Wes Johnson, Raymond Felton, Utah 1st

Blazers get: Steve Nash, Anthony Randolph

Who says no to that trade? Possibly the Suns, but they would be getting Arizona hero D-thrill, someone they wanted before the draft and a reason for Phoenix fans to show up despite Nash being gone.

(My first variation of this trade I had us getting Childress and Gortat instead of Lopez, which would help Phoenix get cheaper, but losing their two best players seemed a little gluttonous, this seemed more likely.)

What do you think? Would this get us Batum? Is it fair?

I would trade Williams for Batum in a half second

Batum is one of the most underrated players in the NBA. Williams is a PF. We have a pretty good PF. Time to balance this team out.

Get it done!

Agreed.

I don’t think the Blazers do that deal, personally.

I think you've overvalued Nash a little

Nash is almost 38 years old and I think (could be wrong here) that this is the last year of his contract.

by TenderWolf on Jan 27, 2012 4:56 PM CST reply actions

nash?

Leading the league in assists, Shooting 53.5% from the floor averaging 14.5 points per game. Easily makes them a contender for the playoffs. hell if needed the Suns could also throw in Dudley, a good backup 2/3, all hustle on a cheap long term deal

by Will Smith on Jan 27, 2012 5:32 PM CST up reply actions

No doubt he's a good player

Just seems like a slightly high price for a partial season rental. If I’m Portland I probably only do this if I think this gets me to the finals this year.

by TenderWolf on Jan 27, 2012 6:48 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions

Suns will in this trade easy

They give up an aging nash and get back Felton who is probably a better pg at this point. They also give up lopez for derrick williams and a first round pick? Not to mention, suns are getting an x factor in wes johnson.

by andrew33 on Jan 27, 2012 5:04 PM CST reply actions

Yeah, the suns won't get this much for Nash

Felton isn’t having a very good year in Portland, but even so there’s no way they’d get this kind of haul for Nash given his age and (I think) time left on his contract.

by TenderWolf on Jan 27, 2012 5:08 PM CST up reply actions

Good trade for the Wolves.

Good trade for PHX.

Only makes sense for POR if they think they can contend this year.

by Simitar on Jan 27, 2012 5:12 PM CST reply actions

well they can't keep Batum anyway?

I mean they could match an offer sheet, but if they were willing to pay him 12 million a year they’d probably already have done that…

by VoodooMagic on Jan 27, 2012 5:48 PM CST up reply actions

You don't abandon ship on Williams this quickly

He’s the #2 pick and is 18 games into his career. It would be foolish to trade him for so little right now. I like Batum, but the Wolves shouldn’t have to give up such an asset to get him, especially when he is an RFA this offseason.

by wolves21ok on Jan 27, 2012 5:14 PM CST reply actions

Wow

I didn’t even see the Utah first included in there. So, the proposal from the Wolves end is Derrick Williams, Wes Johnson, and the Utah first for Batum and Lopez.

This would be an absolutely terrible, atrocious trade. They would be abandoning ship on their two most recent high draft picks, and giving up their best future asset, for Batum and Robin Lopez, the worse of the twins.

Why not just have the Wolves sign Batum in the offseason and they accomplish nearly the same thing (minus Lopez) and retain the pick, Williams, and Johnson.

by wolves21ok on Jan 27, 2012 5:29 PM CST up reply actions

Keep the first

Or even just make it a 2nd rounder, and Suns would still do it

by Will Smith on Jan 27, 2012 5:32 PM CST up reply actions

Even then

I still wouldn’t from the Wolves perspective. Batum/Lopez would both be RFA’s at the end of the season. They could both leave, and Williams would have been traded for 3 months of Batum/Lopez.

by wolves21ok on Jan 27, 2012 5:37 PM CST reply actions

sorry

supposed to be a reply to Will Smith above

by wolves21ok on Jan 27, 2012 5:39 PM CST up reply actions

RFA

means if the team wants to keep them they have the opportunity to match any deal that any other team throws at them. Therefore no they don’t just walk, and if Min really liked them after this year, they will just match the offer. If you are hesitant on giving up D-Will, how about Beasley instead?

by Will Smith on Jan 27, 2012 5:39 PM CST up reply actions

I would MUCH rather see Beasley go with Williams

You shouldn’t trade an asset until you know exactly what you have. The Wolves aren’t sure what they have with Williams, and I don’t think he should be jettisoned so soon.

Beasley, Randolph, Wes Johnson…they’ve all shown what they are at this point. Its not too soon to move them.

Again, my main argument about making a trade like this is that the players can be acquired in 3 months anyway via RFA. Obviously, teams can match, but I would much rather see the Wolves with Batum AND Williams than one or the other.

by wolves21ok on Jan 27, 2012 5:45 PM CST up reply actions

Why the hell would PHX do that though?

Beasley is in the middle of the worst season of his career, and his career has decidedly gotten worse….he’s a free agent after the season and will probably ask for more money than he is worth.

The Williams trade would actually happen

I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.

by VoodooMagic on Jan 27, 2012 5:49 PM CST up reply actions

Suns

Do it because well we are having a terrible year with Nash and all we are doing keeping him is delaying rebuilding. Trading him gets is Beasley a guy who has a ton of talent(Suns #1 problem right now is lack of talent), and Felton a guy that could be the heir to Nash. Mike D.(our offence is still like his) loved Felton, and didn’t want to trade him. Felton is the only other PG that could be close to Nash. Aside from Rubio who looks good.

by Will Smith on Jan 27, 2012 5:52 PM CST up reply actions

"Trading him gets is Beasley a guy who has a ton of talent"

At what point are words like “talent” and “potential” just nice ways of saying “massive disappointment”?

by Simitar on Jan 27, 2012 5:55 PM CST up reply actions

Beasley

Reminds me of Zach Randolph. both have loads of talent, and could put up big numbers when they mature. Randolph found it when he was traded. For the Suns, its worth the gamble for Beasley to live up to his potential.

by Will Smith on Jan 27, 2012 5:58 PM CST up reply actions

Odds of Beasley living up to his potential in the rest of THIS season?

Pretty slim. And then Phoenix is stuck gambling if they think he’ll eventually get it.

by Simitar on Jan 27, 2012 6:12 PM CST up reply actions

intriguing

if only because I suspect Beaz’s potential would best be realized on a team that needed him to score a lot.

Yo ho ho and a FirstRow stream!

by TMiss on Jan 28, 2012 11:02 AM CST up reply actions

I agree

But I also think Beasley’s potential is “score a bunch of points for a bad team”.

I don’t think he will ever understand team basketball and will never be a significant part of a winning team.

by Simitar on Jan 28, 2012 11:06 AM CST via mobile up reply actions

But giving up Williams, Johnson, Utah #1, and Randolph

Just seems like WAY too much for Batum and Lopez, both of which could be obtained through FA.

Suns would probably do it for Beasley instead of Williams mainly because they get Felton to replace Nash, take a flyer on Beasley at PF and a first round pick for rebuilding. Nash is gone at years end, so really they would just be trading the final months of Nash for a proven player in Felton and a first rounder.

by wolves21ok on Jan 27, 2012 5:56 PM CST up reply actions

"But giving up Williams, Johnson, Utah #1, and Randolph"

100% agree.

Thats why I think the real possible trade is:
Beasley, and Randolph for Batum and Lopez.

by Will Smith on Jan 27, 2012 6:01 PM CST up reply actions

Johnson is a throw in.

Randolph I’ll be surprised if we resign him. Adelman doesn’t appear to be a fan. Kevin Love is absolutely dying playing too many minutes and AR can;t get off the bench.

by Simitar on Jan 27, 2012 6:13 PM CST up reply actions

I agree we're essentially giving up Williams and Utah's #1

I’ve never been terribly enamored of either Lopez brother though I think Robin would be a solid pickup but I’m unclear on his contract situation. He should be due to be extended but I didn’t hear if he was or not. If we could get Gortat that would be a steal.

by zebano on Jan 29, 2012 12:25 PM CST up reply actions

Why don't we skip the trade

and sign Batum and Lopez as free agents this summer?

www.unleashkevinlove.com

by erikanthony on Jan 27, 2012 5:48 PM CST reply actions

Because

You can’t guarantee signing them. They are Restricted, so the home team could match. There is more risk waiting.

by Will Smith on Jan 27, 2012 5:50 PM CST up reply actions

There is a strong chance neither teams match

If POR wanted to pay Batum they would have extended him already. you drop 4/48 on Batum and he is likely yours.

PHX has Gortat who is better and cheaper than Lopez will be

Fair to excellent chance you can get both of them.

That’s my only real critique with this trade, no real need to get either through trade.

I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.

by VoodooMagic on Jan 27, 2012 5:51 PM CST up reply actions

True

but why not do the trade? You get the players now, and YOU get to do the matching. This gives the FA more controll when it comes to offering the contract. Also all your giving up is players that are also RFA so your giving up players you are gunna loose anyways. Its a win-win.

by Will Smith on Jan 27, 2012 5:55 PM CST up reply actions

If its the trade you proposed...

then yes, its just RFAs. In the deal that the post is about, they are dumping Johnson under contract, Williams under contract, and a future #1. It just seems like too much to get the right to match for Batum, rather than just trying to sign him in the offseason.

by wolves21ok on Jan 27, 2012 6:00 PM CST up reply actions

Well I'm a big Williams fan for 1

Maybe the biggest

so anyway to get awesome players without giving up Williams I am for.

by VoodooMagic on Jan 27, 2012 6:08 PM CST up reply actions

That's what I don't get about it

all things equal this is a fine trade for the Wolves.

I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.

by VoodooMagic on Jan 27, 2012 5:50 PM CST up reply actions

Give up Derrick Williams for the right to match RFA offers to Batum & Lopez? Pass. You don’t want to get painted into a corner where you’ve given up so much for that right to match, and then someone comes along with an insane offer to Batum that makes no sense.
