HELP ME SEE THE LIGHT!
As a long time creeper, occasional poster, and frequent reader, I would really, really appreciate some insight on why insistence/infatuation on Nicholas Batum? I guess I haven't really seen the light yet. I get he is a solid role player on the Blazers, but he cannot get any burn there consistently. How much are we basing our love/lust for him on his potential? I have seen some people willing to trade DWill for him, or try to come up with some creative way to trade for him. Others are willing to wait until next years free agency for him as he is a RFA, and they are willing to give him a 4/48 contract! See that is the part I don't understand. How in the world is this guy even given a thought to be paid that much, let alone trade the #2 pick in this past years draft? Help me see the light, because I can't think that his "potential" warrants that much money or talent. When does the thinking along the lines of Beasley and Randolph come into play, when is it no longer "potential" and just flat out "can't put it together"? He's been in the league for over 3 years, and his career PER is 14.9, which is league average. Is league average really worth that much? I know our wings aren't league average, but I think our idea of what Batum is as a basketball player is really beyond what he has shown to be capable of. Give me your thoughts below on this or other acceptable players we should target. In a side note, I only have basic cable now, and don't get to see the Twolves much at all. I just want to say that I really enjoy the report cards of the game!

Batum is better than league average
He shoots at a high percentage and defends decently. His PER this year, so far, is nearly 18 which is good. He’s getting to the line more, and progressing expectedly. I think, he would shine here in an expanded role. Basically, he is exactly the type of player we’re lacking. I would pay him 10 million per.

What about last year?
When he did have an expanded role and got about 32 min of burn per game and had a PER of 14.8 with a DRTG of 108? I just think $10 mil year is steep, considering his most similar players in the NBA are Jeff Green, Ryan Anderson, Brandon Bass and Andres Nocioni (per basketball reference). I mean those are all average to slightly above average players, but are they worth DWill or $10 mil per year?
I really don't like PER and don't actually like Drtg much either
I put a lot of stock in eFG% TO% TRB% ws48 and most in WP48
batum grades out very very well in those categories (I also look at Steal% and block % for defensive activity as well)
He had a regressive year last year
for whatever reason. It was only his third, so I’ll chalk it up to growing pains. He’s just a good player that is young, and gives this team exactly what it needs. 10 million sounds steep, but there are less valuable players than Batum making more than that. I like him more than Williams for this team, and overall it’s pretty close. I would trade Williams for him.

He's the 2012 Aaron Aflalo
The grass is always greener my friend and that’s part of the infatuation. To quote a great speaker “we need to water our grass.”

Oh noes
He’s a tad more than Afflalo:

He has legit wing size, can guard both the 2 and 3, can hit the 3, rebounds his position well, doesn’t turn it over, and…well, just imagine everything that Wes Johnson was supposed to be. Now jack that up to 11. The infatuation is his production is exactly what Kahn thought he was getting in Johnson. Right idea, wrong guy. You can water Wes all you want. He’s a weed.
I wonder how close Kahn was to trading the 4th pick for Batum
two years ago. Seems like Kahn almost could have really built a great team. Now we’re stuck in mediocre land until Love and the Rickster get another amigo.

Si
He’s loved him some Batum since 09. Batum is their #1 guy, Mayo is on the radar, and they’ve been asked about Allen.
I wasn't comparing his game to Aflalo
I was stating how he’s the 2012 version of him because for what seemed like all of 2011 twolves fans on this site were clamoring for him. Every year there seems to be someone that’s a midlevel exception player that we talk about getting.
And Wes isn’t just a weed, he’s a 6’6" weed who can kinda shoot and jump high.

Don't get me wrong
I like Batum as a player and I definitely can see how he would make sense. However, I just can’t imagine giving up a guy like DWill for him, considering the amount of money he is going to demand in a couple years. I think he is overvalued right now….
Call me crazy, but i’d rather make a push for Jared Dudley from Phx…It probably wouldn’t take a whole lot to get him and he’s locked up for just under $5million per.
Batum is a better, slightly younger version of Dudley. However, they are both good shooters (Dudley is probably slightly better) and their career numbers are about equal. I understand that Batum has better upside, but do you think his upside is really THAT much more to warrant the kind of contract?
The situation Phx is in, we could probably get him for cap space and a flier on a guy like Beas or Wes Johnson. They might even be interested in Ridnour if they are looking to move Nash. I’d much rather be part of that kind of bargaining that whatever it’s going to take to get Batum.

Everyone gets overpaid nowadays
You gotta take a chance on life in you wanna win. Batum is life. Water in the middle of the Sahara. Just drink, baby.

If we're talking about mortgaging the future for a wing player
Why not spend the ten million on someone that has proven himself?
