Now on ward to the grades. I admit that I wasn't able to catch the whole game tonight but ... here we go.

Star-divide

Wesley Johnson-

Well folks, this is classic Wesley Johnson version crap. 2-7 FGs, one of them a dunk, the other make, a long two. Combine that with missing treys, and passing up treys and a whopping six turn overs. The box score speaks for itself this was not a great game for Wes. I could've sworn he blocked a shot but they didn't give him credit. Anyway, this guys not playing like a starting SF or SG. A surprising drive and dunk though, so that rolls it up.

Grade: D (Not an F because he managed to land a +/- of +8, proves he didn't get completely burned)

Kevin Love-

So what, he didn't get a Double Double. So what Ricky out rebounded him. He scored 29 points on 10-15 shooting. Kevin Love really wasn't joking that he was going to get on a hot streak eventually. It wasn't a lights out complete Kevin Love box score stuffer, but it was a good sold well played game.

Grade: A (Hitting shots this effectively is worth an A-

Nikola Pekovic-

Well, he's a beast, and he continues to prove it. Pek can score on the block and rebound, and he did that tonight. He does exactly what he's supposed to do: set picks and get boards. He's looking much more consistent than good ol' (non-super) Darko.

Grade: A-

Luke Ridnour-

Finally he hit some shots. He's been shooting cold lately, but to day it was better. Still not great, but adequate. He got to the rim nicely once I remember splitting the D for a lay in. He's also seems to be doing well with that little floater (a la shot over Diondre Jordan).

Grade: B+ (His grade rises if he hits more of his threes)

Ricky Rubio-

This was a great game for Ricky. He took it to the rim, hit his shots, hit threes. Ricky rolled tonight (oh my Rick Roll? weird). 18-11-8 is really filling the stat sheet up & a +/- of +22. Just a great game.

Grade: A+

Anthony Randolph-

Ho hum. It wasn't bad. It wasn't good. I want to see Anthony block some more shots.

Grade: B-

Michael Beasley-

Boom! Beasley sighting! I think I posted something about Beasley lighting it up. Yep, a couple of videos of him doing just that last year. This highlight reel would look quite similar. I think he's finally starting to understand the whole take it to the rim and draw fouls ideal, and it appears that the refs are starting to notice that he's actually capable of that. I for see a move into the starting line up coming soon (agree? COMMENT).

Grade: A (not a A+ because he didn't do much else than score)

Martell Webster-

He'd getting back into the action and he looks like he's moving pretty good. It seems like he's accepting his current role. Really liked the way that he sprinted to the rim on that lob.

Grade: B

Others: Not enough minutes or impact to deserve a grade.

Anyway, good win for the wolves.

Until next time,

peace yall

I didn't get to see the game,

so take this with a grain (block) of salt, but I’d give Beasley an A+ just because he scored exactly how he scores best. It’s all we’ve ever wanted from him on the offensive end. We have plenty of guys who can score, and a few guys who can rebound, but rarely does any of our guys score like that.

Also, Ricky’s performance was incredible. Check out this highlight video.

Great report card! A great game, so it’s hard to grade anyone too low.

I like Beasley off the bench

There I said it. He scores, but he doesn’t make the offense hum, which we need when the game opens. I’d rather us (rubio) get the O into rhythm at the beginning of the game than see Beasley hold onto the ball.

That’s not to say that he should always come off the bench. Once he learns how to play within the offense and do his business, then I think we should start him.

by hipity on Jan 31, 2012 2:18 AM CST reply actions

With competent SG (not in the roster) and SF (healthy Webster) this team would be a solid playoff team.

Coach has to keep Beasly away from becoming the crazy version of Gay or Melo, score minded players who hurt their teams and never will make them contenders. NBA teams need a guy who they can send to attack in iso mode on ocassion. Coach has to avoid Beasly from becoming the crazy version of Gay or Melo, score minded players who hurt their teams and never will make them tittle contenders. NBA teams need a guy who they can send to attack in iso mode on ocassion, more or less depending of games, and that´s what only Beasly can do in this team. But Adelman has to keep Beasly coming off the bench, keep him humble ("you´re not the leader, you are the scorer when your number is called, the leader is the guy who knows the playbook, and Rick has to teach him to play defense too, especially to not get lost in zone defense.

Nice Report Card.

A decisive win on the road against a good team is always cause for generosity.

I am all for keeping Beasley as a sixth man/ scorer option. I think that suits his skills set perfectly if he can wrap his head around it.

I have been noticing both Beasley and Randolph start to make the wrong play and then reverse course and make the right basketball play. It was nice last night to see Ridnour reward Randolph with a close in shot for this.

Hopefully the coach is getting through to them and once they train their instincts towards the right basketball play they will make it quicker and be more effective.

by SlowBreak on Jan 31, 2012 8:51 AM CST reply actions

Good write up

Note on the game: Beasley did great and all but the offensive sets seemed to be either A) go to Beasley or B) go with PnR etc. Once Beasley had the ball, like on every other night, opponents know he’s gonna try to score/shoot. The difference last night was Beasley made shots and drove a lot more often. But he still needs to be a part of the whole offense instead of being a separate piece because we all know he’s not gonna have Budinger on him every game. I am shocked it took McHale so long to double Michael.

by Jordan Seiffert on Jan 31, 2012 9:03 AM CST reply actions

There were one or two plays

Where Beasley quickly measured up the situation and gave up to attempt an attempt. It was good to see. I was perfectly okay with him today and if he can incorporate giving up these kinds of plays more in a good rhythm, he will be a super player.

I’d also like to see some traditional sets run for him by Adelman. I want to see him succeed as a team player. Come the playoffs, it will be important to really mix thing up. If I know correctly, he is a good passer too. We really need to create plays where the play can both turn out to be some kind of isolation or Beasley has the option of starting the play in a nice rhythm. That would be awesome, and Adelman is the man to find these kinds of plays.

by Keelhaul on Jan 31, 2012 9:43 AM CST up reply actions

What I didn't like

Was during those non-attempts, it did take him some seconds to really make himself give up the play. Maybe he is not used to giving up, maybe he was conflicted about what to do, but it did cost us some seconds. Plus, when he gave up the ball, we were really back to where we began. I’d actually like to see some plays in which a given-up isolation can quickly turn into a normal play.

by Keelhaul on Jan 31, 2012 9:52 AM CST up reply actions

I hope Beas gives Mr. Love and Mr. Rubio some credit...

Beas gets 12 pts on FTs — 12 of 12 attempts is very cool. But Beas never got the calls before. Why is he getting calls now? Here’s my take:

- Love’s performance last year got the attention of the refs and moved the Wolves from earthworm level to a team that at least gets some sunlight on what they are doing.

- Rubio’s performance this year got not only the ref’s attention, but made the Wolves a fan favorite — the ref’s cannot diss us without the world knowing.

- Love’s frequent, ummm - reminders to the refs that fouls are being committed are having an affect that shines the light on players like Beas as well.

I think that without Love & Rubio, Beas would never have had such a great night. I don’t wanna take away from Beas’s accomplishment, he was awesome. But the fact that he was getting calls that he never would have gotten last year is due to team effort. I guess I shoulda included Adelman as a factor as well.

Regardless, if Beas can keep this up, we are in the playoffs. A delightful victory and hopefully an omen as well.

by timmuggs on Jan 31, 2012 9:49 AM CST reply actions

Maybe you'r right but

Beas went to the rim stronger (and more) than he used to. I would like to see him post up more (and don’t post up than shoot turnaround jumper but to go to the rim strongly.)

Let's be honest

suddenly we’re getting the calls more often than not, and it’s not hard to believe that the excrescent sleaze that is David Stern’s NBA would tell the refs to cut Ricky and his teammates some slack.

Every year the NBA LOVES to see a formerly bad team pick up their game and make the playoffs. I think we’re this year’s anointed surprise team, and even Pek will start getting calls as the season progresses.

I don't buy into any conspiracy on this

I do believe that better teams get the calls, but I think it’s a lot simpler than a conspiracy.

It’s like this: When a bad player gets hit, the refs see a bad player making a bad play. When a good player makes a bad/awkward play, they see a foul. If it’s unclear, they’re going to give better players on better teams the benefit of the doubt. I don’t think it’s intentional, I think it’s as simple as what they know biasing what they see.

Now that we don’t suck, we get the benefit of the doubt more often.

Dude, it's Adelman

He’s a seasoned pro when it comes to ref politics. He couldn’t believe that traveling call on Beasley. He just stood right up and started yelling at the refs “call that all game at both ends”.

I can predict the future using Norm Van Lier's crystal balls.

Furthermore

A lot of Beasley’s FT attempts in the fourth were very untimely calls for refs to just make. The Wolves were +12 or +14 with 6-8 minutes remaining. The refs called the fouls. It slowed down the fourth quarter, but they had to call it when Courtney Lee is trying to trace Beasley’s tatoos.

Beasley caution

Driving to the hoop when it’s there for him is almost never bad. I do think he got bailed out once or twice by the refs. Much of his driving comes from being able to hit his jump shots. When he’s not missing his jump shots, he’s going to have a good game. But when he misses, I think it’s going to look a lot uglier.

He still stopped the ball a lot, and he made some goofy, irresponsible passes that probably come from having to think hard about getting others involved when that should naturally flow. Not unlike when Wellington got hot, I really want to see more. What happens when his shot isn’t falling? Is he still helpful, or does that mean we’re going to lose the game unless we sit him?

by twinstalker on Jan 31, 2012 10:25 AM CST reply actions

Of course, almost everything went in for Beas

but he gave as hint that he might be changing. He tried to pass (ok, made bad ones but it s something completely new to him). He must learn not to force shots when it is not his night. He really have to use size advantage which he often has.
We will see how he responds on nights when shot isn’t falling….

by anbeast on Jan 31, 2012 10:39 AM CST up reply actions

He has a bad habit

You know his “spot”? Usually left wing, 18-20 ft from hoop? Yes, he is good shooting and driving from there but when he did pass (or at least two of his passes from there) were ACROSS the paint to the right elbow. Not a bounce pass but chest pass – easily picked off once and tipped (I believe) the other time. That pass won’t create much unless the receiver is cutting or coming off a screen.

by Jordan Seiffert on Jan 31, 2012 11:20 AM CST up reply actions

Beas was getting hacked

Initial broadcast wasn’t showing it. I thought he was getting calls too. But upon replay it was Courtney Lee most of time just raking him across the arm.

I can predict the future using Norm Van Lier's crystal balls.

Exactly

I don’t remember any calls that were really bail outs. The refs called the fouls even though they may have been untimely because the fouls were so obvious. If you watched closely you could see Lee going for the ball, missing it completely, and grabbing Beasley’s arm and pulling it off the ball.

Rubio keeps teasing us with a near triple-double.

And hinting at the possibility of a quadruple-double. It’s just a matter of time…

by Purpledork on Jan 31, 2012 10:30 AM CST reply actions

It'll depend on Barea's health

When Barea gets back into the rotation, we’ll likely see Rubio’s minutes drop down to a more reasonable number. Hopefully that increases the quality of his minutes (not that I could complain with what he’s giving us already). :)

Keep Beas on the bench

If he somehow keeps playing like this (even a little worse than this), I still think he fits better on a second unit. He doesn’t really seem to gain that much from Rubio, and seems to be just what we need when our bench comes in: someone who can score without needing to be set up. Whether or not he stays efficient is another story entirely.

If I'm pissing you off its probably sarcasm

by CoffeeJanitor on Jan 31, 2012 10:31 AM CST reply actions

I agree

I think this is why, earlier in the year, Adelman had Beasley starting and Rubio came off of the bench. The two do not mesh well offensively, so they need to be on separate units. It just happens now that the roles are reversed. One unit will thrive off of the passes of Rubio, while the other will run off of Rinour (no D) and Beasley. Two units with separate strengths.

Last night I noticed that Pek and Love are the only players that once a shot is put up migrate towards the basket to, you know, rebound a potential miss. Beasley, Tolliver, Webster, Johnson, and Randolph literally take steps away from the basket after a shot attempt.

I can predict the future using Norm Van Lier's crystal balls.

What I've noticed different

about the Wolves this year is astounding. In years past, we’d go into the 4th down by a few, up by a few, didn’t matter. You had the overwhelming feeling that the game was already decided and The Wolves would lose somehow. I don’t have that feeling anymore. Instead, I have a feeling that we will pull it out for the W. We used to lose this game and I’d feel nothing, because that was the Wolves’ MO. Now? I am genuinely disappointed that we couldn’t pull out a win. Our Puppies are changing before our eyes, folks.

Kind of but

Assuming it’s not a last shot a the end of the game type situation we don’t want all 5 guys going for offensive rebounds. Generally its easier for the defense to grab the rebound so having no one getting back on D would lead to a lot of wide open fast break points. Love and Pek are the players who do it the most because Pek is always directly under the basket and Love is always looking for rebounds. The other players rebound in similar ways, they either go for it if it’s a long rebound in their direction or they crash the boards if there’s a lane leading to the rim, otherwise they are (or should be) transitioning back on defense.

I didnt see the game either, but compared to the starters his plus minus wasnt very good. What is that all about? Was he poor on defense? was it due to martin? Either way its great to see him shoot the ball so wel.

by MarkGerard on Jan 31, 2012 12:26 PM CST reply actions

As you know +/- isn't that revealing in a one game setting,

but I will tell you the reduced +/- for Beasley is because he was on the floor with the second unit for some time.

Basically, it's due to

The run was with the starters in the 3rd Q.

Beasley + Ridnour

on the court together is just begging for a high scoring game. Their defense is almost always atrocious. Beasley was much better last night and I think some of the reason for his +/- not being great was just that he was playing with Ridnour for awhile and Ridnour was guarding Kevin Martin. Ridnour vs. Kevin Martin is a horrible matchup—Luke cannot stay in front of him, nor can he affect his jumper. Beasley and Ridnour typically play all-star game basketball(but not all-star level). Lots of looking for their own shot and no defense. This game, Beasley came off the bench playing within the system fairly well, but got hot and started taking high-efficiency shots. He played a pretty good all-around game other than 1 bad pass. Very nice step in his progression, but I would keep him coming off the bench. He is useful to have when Love isn’t on the floor and efficient/consistent bench production(assuming Beasley can provide that) can make this team a winner.

Brad Miller

played less than 2mins, didn’t post a single stat in the box score, and was still a +6. What?

www.unleashkevinlove.com

by erikanthony on Jan 31, 2012 12:50 PM CST reply actions

Read it this way....

He didn’t disrupt the offense, or he helped teammates score by positioning himself well, or he denied his guy the ball, or he kept his guy from scoring, or he helped keep other opponents from scoring, or he blocked out his man on rebounds, or…. Hmm, so many other things that don’t go into the stats.

by Zev on Jan 31, 2012 1:21 PM CST up reply actions

Generally single game +/- doesn't tell you squat,

but there is a reason that Luke was our only starter with a (-) last night.

Looking at popcorn machine’s gameflow, we made our 2nd quarter comeback when Luke sat down and in the 3rd we played well with Luke, but really turned it on when he hit the bench.

And 23 of KMart’s 29 points came with Luke in the game.

by Simitar on Jan 31, 2012 1:12 PM CST reply actions

This is another example of using stats to reinforce a bias

Beasley sets a team record for points off the bench, but didn’t get enough of those points in a preferred way. Or we just know it won’t last. Or we know he will backslide or hog the ball. Ridnour guards World Peace in the Laker game. World Peace contributes few points, but it couldn’t be the undersized Ridnour’s plucky defense. The meme is, instead, that MWP has long since stopped scoring on anyone, so a broom could guard him. Miller contributes not one mentionable stat, but is +6, more than Beasley. It implies that we would have won the game even more easily if Miller had played more minutes than Beasley. Stats we don’t like, we marginalize or ignore. Stats that back us up, we lionize and praise. It just never ends.

How many games have started out with poor shooting/turnovers dropping us into a huge hole at the beginning of the game? Games where the only player with some semblance of shooting acumen at that point has been Ridnour? Maybe the real reason we were able to blow this game open is that for the first time in many games we were hotter than the other team at the start of the game. Simple as that.

by ogishkemuncie on Jan 31, 2012 6:08 PM CST up reply actions

this does not describe a problem with stats

it describes a problem that all people have with bias in judgement. One argument for stats and is that it’s easier to see and argue about bias with stats than it is for the eye test.

One argument for stats and is that it’s easier to see and argue about bias with stats than it is for the eye test

THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT!!!!

Everyone has bias and everyone relies on simplifications to understand the world. Statistical arguments are superior, not because they are free of bias and assumptions, but because these flaws are laid bare for anyone to see.

The mind was made to...

…process stories and it is much easier to convey a story with numbers than it is with words, which have a nasty habit of meaning slightly different things to slightly different people. 2+2 will always equal 4 while “he really can’t create his own shot” rings all sorts of different bells. If the math is right, you can make objective (in the sense of each side of the equation has to equal the other) claims about how Activity X correlates with Claim Y. That doesn’t mean the right question is being asked or the right story being told, but it does mean that there is an objective truth to the formula in hand. Unless the math is bad, the problem is never with the “stats”; it’s with the question they are used to answer.

Beasley 12-12 from the line?

I cannot remember the last time I saw Beasley make all of his free throws in a game, especially 12. Beasley looked like a much more mature person last night as he put his head down, shut up, and just played. His going 12-12 from the line is a testament to his keeping his head in the game and playing like an adult. He admitted after the game that he stopped worrying about his shot, stopped thinking altogether and just played. Maybe this 6-man role is bringing the best out of Super Cool Beas…

by Timberpups Blog on Jan 31, 2012 2:09 PM CST reply actions

Beasley's high free throw attempts gives us a pretty narrow range of games to choose from.

He’s shot as many as 12 free throws twice here. Let’s set the bar at 10 FTAs, though. There’ve only been 28 ten-FTA games by Wolves players in the last two years, since B-Easy’s been around.

Kevin Love has 23 of those 28 games. Bring your hard hat to work, Mr. Love.

Mike has had games where he was 7-10, 8-12, and 12-12 from the line. I wish the opposition would defend Mike with a Courtney Lee, and not force him to go right, every dang night. Alas, it doesn’t happen so often.

In the game I saw, Beasley was much better than half a grade over Ridnour

But we are so full of joy that I’m not gonna bitch more our must-only-be-backup PG

by antrodax on Jan 31, 2012 5:09 PM CST reply actions

Did you happen to see him on the other half of the court?

Old Beasley was in full force on the defensive end and by full force I mean, totally lost and confused. He had a great game for sure, but I still think there was lots of room for improvement.

by Child soldier Frank Jaeger on Jan 31, 2012 9:16 PM CST up reply actions

Where would your team be without Ridnour?

Who are you going to play in his place? Ellington? Barrea is a phantom right now. Malcolm Lee has not played in the regular season, I believe. Ridnour has been a starting guard for years. He may not be your ideal #2, but the Wolves don’t have a #2.

by ogishkemuncie on Jan 31, 2012 6:11 PM CST reply actions

Couldn't you say this about any position with an injury?

I’m expecting Ridnours minutes to drop to around 20 when JJ is back and fully healthy.

by Child soldier Frank Jaeger on Jan 31, 2012 9:17 PM CST up reply actions

Where would our team be without a starting two guard?

We’d be starting our backup point guard at the two, that’s where we’d be. ;-)

At least Ellington brings some hustle, don't want to run the offense and can D a bit

Even has had his rush of shooting.

They play in the same league, as I see it. If I must take one, I’ll take Ridnour, maybe.

Wes had almost 3 minutes of very promising

ball in the 1st quarter, and seemed to be getting more confident. Then the wheels came off once again and he donned the cloak of “something far worse than invisibility”. I keep holding out hope that RA will get through to him at some point soon, but once JJ is back, it’s going to be tough for Wes to get minutes.
I loved having McHale run out of ideas and options after he so obviously enjoyed himself in the Rockets win at the Target Center. Payback is a MoFo, Kevin!!!!

Compare and contrast:

Tebow. Superbowl commercials. Kneeling. Etc.

Luke Ridnour. One of his newborn twins has a problem, he obviously turns to his faith as a big part of how he copes with it, but he eschews publicity of any kind, and has the team on radio silence to respect his privacy. Eventually he mentions it, once, at media day almost a year later.

Which one of these people is a self-aggrandizing kid? It’s an easy call.

I guess I just don't care

He’s using his platform to push his faith. We’re seeing other athletes do the same now (Have you been watching Tolliver’s Twitter?).

I am not religious, but I have no problem with people broadcasting their views. Again, I see no reason to dislike Tebow. He gets a ton of coverage on ESPN, yeah, and that’s dumb, but its not his fault.

Check my sig line.

For silly reasons I attended a Wooddale service a few weeks back. They have a little part of their services where people give ‘faith testimonials.’ That week one of the talks was by a High School kid. His basic story arc was that he’d been arrogant before, but now that he had rediscovered his faith he wasn’t arrogant any more – and because he’d become so humble, the football team made him captain, and they won the state tournament! Go him!

No undo pride there! No sirree. God rewarded him with a trophy!

That’s Tim Tebow. I can’t imagine what makes people accept superficial silly kids as supposedly religious figures, but in my version of Matthew there’s a verse at 6:5 about not making a self-promoting spectacle of your prayer. It’s called the Sermon on the Mount, and you’d think a devoutly religious person would have noticed it.

It’s like the people who survive a plane crash and say they think God has a plan for them. God must not have had a plan for all the people who died horribly in the flames. That’s a self-involved, asinine, awful sort of thing to say. It’s pure self-centeredness. I hate it.
