Don't think we could have played much worse...

and still be in the game. One thing for sure, Wes just ain’t gonna do it at the 2, 3 or wherever! Bease is gonna be Bease – he’s like a smaller Darrell Dawkins from the 70’s and 80’s – amazing physical gifts, totally awesome one moment, clueless the next.

We need a competent wing in the worst way…

It sucks to see long and athletic on the opponents team....

I still believe the Pups will figure out that quick passes work better than lazy passes.

I respectfully disagree

I saw Memphis cutting off the obvious passing lanes because they could predict what the Wolve’s were going to run for an offense. If the team makes the quick decisive pass, the defense can’t react quickly enough. But that’s MHO.

That was grim

Johnson awful. Beasley terrible. Love mediocre. Rubio more or less saved them, though even he had a couple of boneheaded plays. One thing: he needs to keep shooting the shots he’s taking. Another thing: go to their best action as much as possible in the 2nd half: Rubio-Love PnR.

Shooting 36% from the floor,

33% from three and 67% from the line.

Ten turnovers.

Rubio and Williams are the only two Wolves with assists.

These are games good teams find a way to win.

Play like trash for more than half the game but hang around enough to have a chance…put together a nice 6-8 minute stretch towards the end and win…

it’s what almost every decent team did against us last year (nothing like losing to the uninspired Lakers over and over)…

Rudy Fernández and Marc for the Wolves to help Ricky, but Marc has been in Memphis since he was a teenager (when Pau was drafted to Memphis, Marc went to high school there), and he feels at home there. Amazingly, Memphis is still in this game

Credit to their dominance of the early first half, and hitting the contested jump shots.

That said, we’re doing as well as we possibly can on defense – not letting them post it up or take any open shots. If they beat us like this … then it’s our offense’s fault.

So players on the block can crash the lane at release but the shooter can’t until it hits the rim?

by domesticllama on Jan 4, 2012 9:29 PM CST up reply actions

Nvm

Answered by google.

c. A player who occupies a free throw lane space shall not touch the floor on or across the free throw lane line, nor shall any player ‘back out’ more than 3’ from the free throw lane line. A player who does not occupy a free throw lane space must remain behind the three-point line. This restriction applies until the ball leaves the free thrower’s hands.
d. The free throw shooter may not cross the plane of the free throw line until the ball touches the basket ring, backboard, or the free throw ends.

Even with all the poor free throws and bad shooting… it was all the sloppy passes that killed them. That is a pretty easy fix.

by Rodman99 on Jan 4, 2012 9:35 PM CST up reply actions

re: Lukes missed free throw......

Not really any rule against intentionally missing. There are just a few key points to remember.

1) The ball must hit the rim to be in play. So, if you shoot it hard off the backboard and it comes back to you without hitting the rim, its a dead ball. As long as it hits the rim, if you can get your own rebound, its fair game.

2) Your feet do NOT have to remain planted, but you can NOT cross the free throw line until the ball hits the rim. As a result, you never see players jump while taking a free throw, as if their momentum took them forward at all and they landed even on the line, it would be a lane violation and the free throw would be a miss. By remaining planted you can be right behind the line with no worries of a lane violation. In some youth leagues you’ll see little kids take jumpers for their free throws, as they lack the strength to make a free throw while planted, but they have to jump straight up and sometimes are subject to lane violations

I intentionally tried what Luke did

In the first quarter of a rec league right after I subbed in. Having never played organized ball in my life I thought it would be a heady play. Everyone in the gym was yelling at me before the ref had time to blow this whistle. Apparently this violation is well known by most basketball players.
If Luke did that on purpose he should take a long, hard look at himself.

by fanslaststand on Jan 4, 2012 9:45 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

I'm sure you did it a little different than him...

First choice would have been a good high bounce off the rim, but one thing that hasn’t been pointed out is that it is really, really hard to get an offensive rebound on a ft. They already have you boxed out.

I actually thought it was a good play by Luke. As was pointed out, his only error was stepping over the line a bit quick.

by TO12 on Jan 4, 2012 9:58 PM CST via iPhone app up reply actions

Actually you're right

I ripped it off the backboard. LOL
That’s why everyone noticed. But I also was charging full tilt right as I chucked it.
Luke’s play wasn’t nearly as bad as mine, actually.

Average to Slightly below average wing play...

and we are looking at a 3-3, 4-2 team at the very least. Wes and wellington is costing us wins…they really are bad

by Pass the rock on Jan 4, 2012 9:35 PM CST reply actions

well, that's the fact of basketball

It is true, of course, but every team is x players at __ positions away from winning.

I know it’s early, but if the only discourse all season is the often recited SNP mantra ‘one above average wing…’ this site is going to get old quick.

Point made, everyone knows by now.

screw that

i want average play at every position + Love + Rubio. i.e. Get rid of the people that suck.

Didn't you want to hear a story about LeBron's entourage turning down a cake?

Personally, I thought it was a shining example of sports journalism.

Let’s see, Wolves turned the ball over 7 more times than Memhis, and due to poor FT shooting gave up 8 points at the line. Both teams finished with virtually identical FG% and 3pt%.

Luke was way over the line before the ball hit the rim

Actually for the Wolves

that can be considered a good night at the office

Not with missed free throws too.

We shouldn’t win when we turn the ball over like this and miss free throws like this. After 6 games it appears we can actually win so long as we don’t do both. Which we consistently do.

Yea exactly and oddly enough...

We played well defensively. Just gotta play smarter. This will be a good game to learn from. Hopefully we can come back and beat the Cavs.

I’m almost ready to trade Wes for a Lazar-like return.

by jianfu on Jan 4, 2012 9:38 PM CST reply actions

Whose worse

Lazar, Flynn or Wes? I would rate Lazar highest of those just based on defense + low turnovers but the other two are so bad I have no idea how to sort it out.

Cavs on Friday is a must win

Reduce turnovers, reduce personal fouls, shoot better, win.

by PoohRubio on Jan 4, 2012 9:44 PM CST reply actions

Memphis may well be best in the West

They’re strong and tough, and have gained depth. At least there is a lot of room for improvement with the Wolves. I know that’s nothing new, but I think you can see it happening. We knew it couldn’t happen over night.

not even close

Portland and OKC, followed by Denver and LAL (all predicated on upping Bynum’s usage) are pretty clearly the cream of the crop right now. I think LAC is going to gel as the season goes on and end up the fifth seed hopefully setting up an epic LA v LA showdown that the Clippers win.

Anthony Randolph

almost averaged a point per minute but he’ll probably only play another 8 against the Cavs.

Randolph vs. Hollins

Who is the ultimate skinny tall flailer????

by Dr_Defecate on Jan 4, 2012 9:49 PM CST up reply actions

Looking at the box score

The difference was mostly Tony Allen. We defended their main threats pretty well, and the turnover differential isn’t appalling by Wolves standards – in any case, we rebounded well enough to still have more attempts. The +/- on the starters vs the benches is unusually telling. Oh well. Onwards and upwards.

it seemed like rick adelman gave on wesley tonight

i like how RIck Adelman is waiting for beasley to break out of this slump. i dont know why rick doesn’t make beasley recieve the ball mainly in the post where he only has to dribble once to get to the the basket. the Spurs game and this game were completely different in how Beas operated in the offense

Didn't read the whole thread

But I was upset that Kevin Love didn’t come out of the game for a few minutes in the middle of the second half. He looked SOOOOOOOO tired out there.

You can't dust for vomit.

I still think that flagrant was a terrible call.

Allen was just trying to get a shot up so he flailed his body around.

It's hard to disagree with that

Ridnour didn’t do much more than run into Allen while he was elevating.
