Especially since we know who will start the 2nd half
Reduce turnovers, reduce personal fouls, shoot better, win.
I think we should do whatever we can to get DeRozan
for those times when our SG will be matched up against a 5’11" defender.
That was great swarming D
only to be wasted by a Wes 3
What is there to say about Wes anymore?
Just brutal.

When he does manage to shoot, he misses anyway.

Gary, you didn't kill your brother. Those gorillas did.
worst game of season for Love so far
Michael Beasley is a Small Forward. Derrick Williams is a Power Forward.
Every time I look at a boxscore he plays over 40 minutes or so
I figure he’s a bit tired at this point
He's also not impervious to having an off night
Even great players have them. But when he sucks, the lack of talent on our team is really exposed.
ok just looked and he's averaging 39.4mpg
that’s rough with back to backs.
Time out, please?

Pound for pound
Ridnour is the best defensive player for the Wolves and the most consistent offensively. Now the Spanglish Twinkies show !!
Anyone feeling

Not a good sign for Pek
if he can’t get on the court even when the rest of our bigs are completely spent.
"Of what use is a philosopher who does not hurt anybody's feelings?" -Diogenes of Sinope
Pek can dunk the ball, get rebounds and play tough defense
That’s all we ask from the center position.
Darko can do none of those things. Plus he tries to handle the ball, resulting in turnovers and missed shots … why is he playing again?
Love is a prima donna......
great rebounder and shooter because that is all he does! Wolves are very soft tonight in the paint!

Again...
You can’t play JJ extended minutes coming off an injury for fear of losing him for extended time. Yes, I grant he played really well out there, but you don’t risk it.
Bringing honor to uncle rico's family since 2011.
I don't know what else to tell you.
Bringing honor to uncle rico's family since 2011.
5-8 minutes at the level of intensity he plays
and that late in the game, could have been devastating coming off an injury. Look, Adelman and the trainers picked a number of minutes (maybe arbitrarily), and they played JJ for no more than that. Most coaches in the league would take the loss instead of risking re-injury to one of their only talented players. Sucks that we lost, but kudos to Adelman for seeing the (hopefully) bigger picture.
Absolutely agreed.
Bringing honor to uncle rico's family since 2011.
That lineup had a run
but it was mostly Toronto bricking a ton of shots. JJ played well but is probably on limited minutes. Rubio stayed in and was a not a difference maker. Williams stayed in and did not contribute. AR was not impressive while he was in. Tolliver was not bringing anything. I think it’s ridiculous to suggest that the game was lost because Love took over for AR and Luke came in for JJ. No one played well.

He gets abused off high pick and rolls
An aggressive big man and quick PG create space at will. Cleveland exploited this weakness, and so did Toronto – not sure why other teams haven’t attacked us like this.
Granted, it’s not all Ricky’s fault – the other defender has to be there, and with the Wolves, you can count on that never happening.
As for Ricky’s offense – he’s making the same plays he always does, but no one’s hitting shots or giving him any help. Especially Love, who spent the night getting spanked by Amir “who?” Johnson.
He really doesn't get abused on the PnR. he plays it well.
He isn’t a great player (yet), but that just isn’t true.
The Wolves are like the worst meal you've ever had--terrible while you're eating it and even worse later.
by Eric in Madison on Jan 9, 2012 8:32 PM CST up reply actions
Sorry I didn't mean pick and rolls
I meant those high screens where the big sets a pick and the guard just kind of shuffles back and forth until Rubio is out of position – leads to an open shot, drive or pass almost every time. It was painful seeing this over and over again in the Cleveland game (with Varejao setting the pick) and now in this game.
Rookie blues tonight
A compressed schedule and no training camp – he’ll have a few of these.
"Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously."
— Hunter S. Thompson
Maybe Adelman is just looking for answers
In the case of Barea, the answer came immediately:
- Barea is good, can play with Ricky, and makes this team better. No need to play him further; save him for tomorrow, and ease him back in from the injury.
As for every awful player whom we keep yelling for him to take out: RA’s probably just wondering, “is there ANY way these guys can play well? If anyone can get them to produce, it’s me.”
- Still waiting on that one.
I'm not sure that RA's ego is quite that large
I prefer to think that he is exposing the weak members for the owner and GM to see, in a way that doesn’t allow for differing opinions. In a week or so, it will be apparent to even Kahn and Taylor that there is deadwood on this squad and changes need to be made to bring in talent.
2012 the year of Twolves porcelain extraction?
I hope you're right on this
"Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously."
— Hunter S. Thompson
Ah yes, the "give them enough rope" strategy
I don’t think our theories are mutually exclusive. Adelman is playing guys until he knows what they can do. He even said himself that he’s “in talent evaluation mode.” Part of that is to expose weaknesses (like you said), and the other part is to play guys long enough to he can see whether there’s any possibility of redemption (like I said)
I agree that we aren't really that far apart
I suppose what makes this period of evaluation so hard to stomach is that as casual fans( ok, not so casual) we have already pretty much decided what the weaknesses and strengths of these players are. Not being professional and winning coaches aside, we are convinced that what we see is what is there, whether RA sees it that way is the mystery that makes judging his rotations so annoying to us. Can’t he see what we SEE?
2012 the year of Twolves porcelain extraction?
He definitely sees what we see
and probably much more clearly. But there HAS to be a reason he isn’t starting the two rookies. And it’s probably a combination of everything we’ve mentioned, plus stuff that we haven’t even thought about – maybe he wants them to watch the game for a few minutes and think through it strategically before diving in. Maybe that’s why they’re so effective when they finally enter the game.
Ok, if you're going to bring strategy into this!
You’re going WAY over my head!
2012 the year of Twolves porcelain extraction?
I've never met a plan I couldn't reduce
to utter chaos within 5 minutes of thought!
2012 the year of Twolves porcelain extraction?
I wasn't bringing strategy into it
it was more of a layman’s point: take a look at the game and figure out what’s going on, instead of jumping in before you have a clue. I’m sure Ricky and maybe even DWill could do just fine starting, but Adelman has determined that their development starts with coming off the bench – they’ll still play against the other team’s starters, but only after observing for a few minutes first. I’m honestly not upset about it.
I get what you're saying
RA may not be bringing on the rookies too early or for too many minutes, but damn it does show how little talent we actually have when the bench is winning games and the starters are largely losing them!

I don’t get the rotation argument at all. He ends every game with our best players. He can’t play them 48 minutes. Love has produced in the 4th pretty well. Barea had to sit cuz of injury. Luke is the only player who shot well. When you have these players, how can you possibly allocate minutes in such a manner that at some point you don’t have a crappy team out there? We have crappy players, not crappy rotations.

JJ is our best non-Rubio backcourt player by a country mile.

And Wes Johnson,
but only because he gets lost so often. Once he finds himself, he heads back home to Ineptville.
It's cold and dark out there.
Err, I mean, in there. You know, that space where he hangs out while Darko is smoking. Also the place he goes when he thinks about taking a wide open three.

I'm assuming it goes something like:
Oh, oh, shit, I have the ball, I have the ball, oh, oh, oh, shit, okay, okay, okay, I’ll just shoot. Oh no, no, no, no. Ack, ack, shit, get this ball out of my hands!
Bringing honor to uncle rico's family since 2011.
I think it's more like
the wind-up monkey clapping the cymbals in Homer Simpson’s head.
Oh no, no, no, no. Ack, ack,
Great, now I have to picture Wes as a Cathy cartoon every time he gets the ball.
Oddly fitting?

It is more than a little concerning that sci-fi
and British non-utopian novels show a future that is quite easy to envision and as bleak as Dicken’s London.
2012 the year of Twolves porcelain extraction?
starting w/ the best 5 makes sense
then they can play the last 8 minutes of the 4th quarter and be fresh, as opposed to ricky playing the last 14 minutes and being out of gas with two minutes left. PLUS playing your best five at the start of the game and at the half will give you a chance to get off on the right foot!
what the fuck seriously
why the hell do I watch this team every game? its so fricken annoying watching them suck it up
My theory is he is making these guys look like starters
so someone bites on a trade. Adelman knows he has more than a year.

I guess
bottom line, we are playing 2 rookies and after this game hopefully we have a much more strict foundation on who plays in crunch time and who starts the game.
I honestly would like to see us be the kind of team who rolls with the players who are playing the best in that game, but that never happens in the nba…
why does our team play so dumb we need to make 3 pointers
not that I expect us to come back and win but still jesus
Once again...
We shot 34%, you can’t win if you shoot 34% from the floor (Never mind our 79% from the line).
that is the #1 stat here
just COLD at the end

Not really that suprising
Wes, Wayne, Darko and Luke start. Dwill, Rubio, Toliver, JJ are on the bench.
it should be +20-ish
which is still significantly better. You can’t just add each bench players +/-.
Joe Mauer grounded into double play, second to shortstop to first, ________ out at second
this sucks worse because we almost have a for sure loss tomorrow
in which we will play awesome and lose by 1 point and call it a moral victory
so between our bench and our starters, we actually scored -43?
Wow, we do suck.
you can't just add them up like that
but yes the starters were pathetic tonight.
Joe Mauer grounded into double play, second to shortstop to first, ________ out at second
we win this stupid fucking game if we keep barea in
#FireRickAdelman anybody?!
He'd doin the right thing
since he just got off of injury
by Doug West Domination!!! on Jan 9, 2012 8:35 PM CST up reply actions
How is that doing the right thing?
Keeping his hamstring warmed up and active would be doing the right thing. Letting it stiffen up and get cold is a dick move.
Yeah, he should still be playing
the minute he stops it will give out.
Yeah right
Lets be serious and not try and back up what Adelman did tonight.
Typically, teams have these funny guys
with doctorates who advise teams on how to bring back players from injury.

Oh, I knew that
I was just unwise in choosing the comment I replied to in order to make my point.
Gary, you didn't kill your brother. Those gorillas did.
He probably asked Barea and the trainers first
I doubt he’d be so stupid as to make the problem worse.
I think his original plan was to give Barea just a couple minutes in a game that looked like it would be a blowout loss – and then Barea came back in and essentially willed us to the lead, but it didn’t matter since he and Adelman knew he was only going to play a few minutes tonight.
Toronto went all in for the win tonight
45 minutes for Bargnani, 40 for Calderon, 40 for Derozen. Sure would like to play them again at the tail end of their back-to-back-to-back
They went 6:16 without a field goal.

I don't think you can keep throwing Rubio in with 16 minutes left
And down 10 points and expect him to have any gas left for the final 3 minutes.
Yep
This was clearly going to become a problem

What would you rather have:
an all star that gets double doubles ever game, and a bad team that misses the play offs? or a really solid almost all start that gets double doubles in half his games but a a playoff team? Cuz right now Minn has the first one
by Kazper on Jan 9, 2012 8:38 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
For the record I think its possible to have both an all start double double machine and make the play offs
But it just hasn’t been happening yet
K Love can't lead this team yet he commands 70% of the offense going thru him. He's an important piece but not the Messiah!!
The handle, the Ridnour love, the Love animosity
you are so obviously a Eugene alum.

Um, please name someone who is the latter type of player
whom we could realistically trade for, or have acquired earlier, to replace Love.
by mg7505 on Jan 9, 2012 8:41 PM CST up reply actions 1 recs
I could name those players, not that you could trade for though
Its kind of like the issue i have with blazer fans… they all whine about hte PG we have, yet hes probably the best we can have without giving up an important piece
Exactly...
so unless there were some missed/potential opportunity to replace him, criticizing Love for not being the player we ideally need doesn’t help anyone.
I think there will be more field goals with Alabama LSU in their game
then the Wolves had in the 4th quarter
by Doug West Domination!!! on Jan 9, 2012 8:38 PM CST reply actions
I missed the game thread
But did we call out KLove for the multiple times he cost us points when he was too busy bitchin’ to the refs? Once when he simply did not hustle back for an entire play, and essentially gave Toronto a power play. The other time, he thought he drew the foul, was arguing with the ref….and while he did, Toronto tips it back in, Minnesota steals the ball, and passes it to Love….who has his back turned to the play.
Absolutely inexcusable, honestly. KLove is an amazing, ridiculously good player, but this has got to stop. Now. This isn’t just a super-star arguing for the points he deserves. This is costing us points.

It's one game, players have bad games
Kobe went 6/28 earlier this season. Let’s see how Love responds tomorrow. I remember last year he had that 0 point game vs Lakers and came back with 24 and 17 at OKC. He deserves the max, period.

Why? Because you disagree?
I took you for someone smarter than that.
Because with the months and years
of detailed, nuanced discussion on these points, and all of the video that’s been watched, and all of the data that have been pored over, the notion that Love is not “skilled enough” is idiotic at best. The idea that Love isn’t “athletic enough” has been put pretty well to rest as well.

was wes johnon this bad last year?
i thought he had upside
Not this bad, but still awful.
Sub 40% from the field. 35% from 3. Never got to the line. PER of 10.2.
He has an upside the head
that needs to be smacked repeatedly.
When Pekovic gets his legs back and Beasley returns, who will be the 2 odd man out of the rotation?
The 5 off the bench, including AR, were marvelous. At least AR occasionally shows some potential. How about Wes Johnson? The standard 0-5 FG, 0 PF, 0 FTA, 2 TO. He’s still eligible to play in D-league, is he not?
by bluedevil_unicorno on Jan 9, 2012 8:47 PM CST reply actions
don't forget about malcolm lee, brad miller and webster
we gots lots of injuries
AR was bad btw
out of control on offense as usual. I’m ready to give up on him. He has bad hands and can’t score one-on-one, which doesn’t prevent him from trying. On defense Toronto bigs were bodying him up, cause he’s to weak and light.
We learned nothing from this game
Unless any of the following is news:
- For us to win, Love and Rubio both need to shine, and someone else needs to step up
- DWill is a beast, but needs to step up his defense.
- Our current wing players have zero game between them.
- JJ has said game, in spades.
- We could really use Webster and Lee right now.
- We could really use ANY competent wing player right now.
- Darko is terrible.
- Adolph might be worse.
- Pek is probably not good enough to play even ahead of Darko OR Adolph.
- We could really use Brad Miller’s corpse right now.
I stil;l think AR is somewhat valuable in the right matchup
his athleticism can offset his lack of a BBIQ in the right situation., and his contract isn’t all that dear.
