Is Pekovic the Answer at Center?
Nikola Pekovic is playing out of his mind. This is exactly what people hoped for as a best case scenario when he came over from Europe.
He was always a champion in Europe. He won everywhere he went, sort of like Ricky Rubio. But there was some debate as to whether his game could translate to the NBA. Heck, even the hosts of the famous Timberwolf podcast, Twolfcast, said that he should be cut at the start of the season.
But with Darko's injuries, Pek has assumed a starting role, and he has blossomed.
So the question is... Is Pekovic our starting center for the forseeable future? Is that position now locked down? Should we stop looking for a starting center, and focus on filling the other two positions we have left now that we have Love, Rubio, and Pek?
I say Yes, but I am not a very fine basketball mind. I am hoping we can get some more erudite dudes to weigh in on this.

I'm with you.
I’m not a fine basketball mind, but I’ve been on the Pek train since the beginning of last season.
There are no other centers in the league who combine his size and strength with his scoring ability. Not even D-12, the most celebrated center of our time. To me, he’s like an Arvydas Sabonis who can’t pass as well (Okay, and never takes a shot outside of seven feet. You say that like it’s a bad thing). If you’ll remember, Sabonis was one of just a couple guys who could check Shaq in his prime. The refs seem to have gotten used to seeing small humans bounce off of Pek, and he’s not getting called for stupid fouls lately (only two fouls called on him last night).
In short—don’t trade Pek. He’s a rare commodity, and the players who are upgrades are either unattainable, or aren’t that big an upgrade.
I'm going to brag. I drive the Nikola Pekovic fanwagon.

When you say "small humans bouncing off Pek"
What you really mean is “large, very large and huge humans bouncing off Pek”

So we all agree,
Pek is clearly the best center in the league and will be our starting center for the next decade. Excellent.
With that settled, I guess we don’t need to waste time looking for more centers? Darko can be the backup? He can bring his shotblocking when we need a change of pace?
2/3rds of the team is done! We are almost to a championship!
next step:
pulling the plug on the Beas/Wes/Webster SF posse and bringing in the loser of the Batum/Wallace/Matthews deathmatch going on over in Portland.
I would say... 3/10s of the team is done...
We need role players too.
by bringbackbrewer on Feb 16, 2012 12:44 AM CST up reply actions
I think we have role players, but they are asked to do too much
Luke Ridnour or JJ Barea playing backup PG is absolutely fine on a good team. But when asked to play nearly all of the available minutes at the 2 as well, then you have a problem. Adding one above average wing will do wonders for us.

Whose hands are those? I go back and forth on this every time.
Kevin Love is the obvious choice, but now that word is out that Pek is really a big teddy bear, I have to reconsider.
And there’s always Kahnsie….
Then again, maybe the magic is that it almost seems like YOU, the viewer, are the lucky bastard who gets to tickle Rubio’s kitty teats.

We had better not trade him. You don’t get guys that huge in this league anymore.

Is it too early to start the Festus Ezeli train?
Such a great name.
I think unless something unforseeable happens the C position is probably locked up
Maybe the Thunder want him and Ridnour for Harden and in that scenario you can’t ot trade Pek
or for example we could move Williams for McGee then Pek for Evan Turner that might be more valuable than not making that move.
But outside of something that you can’t plan for Pek’s your guy
I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.
I like to see the team trying to improve it's weakest position
and that definitely isn’t starting center with Pek. He is above average on offense and showing improvement in his weakest points (defense, defensive rebounding, fouls and 3-second violations). Good enough for now. Worry about starting 2 and 3, worry about the bizarra evolving kluge that is the second unit, always keep bringing in quality players to compete and push the starters.
Yes
Don’t trade him. Youngish, on a cheap contract, and I think he actually pairs kind of well with Love. While neither is a rangy, shot blocking defender, both rebound very well, score with high efficiency, make their free throws, and play good positional defense. Most centers are overpaid marginal players. Pek is not.
"It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future." -- Yogi Berra
Yes but
Get a backup center who is long and athletic for certain matchups
I'd say yes.
He seems like a huge YES so far this season. I’m going to have to side with Kahn and say lets see it play out for a few more weeks :).
Pek has been a badass this year, shockingly good. We definitely have 3 starting spots locked up with very good players. The 2 and 3 are where we need some “average” play and we’ll have a very good first unit.
If Pek keeps this up the rest of the year he’d have to be considered for the most improved player award.
Nah, Lin is going to win it

The guy can post up (back to the rim) and has some good moves...
6’11" 290, have not seen how he is on defense enough to comment but in last ten games he is getting 10 boards a game and is up to 6 each game this year. Unless his defense is terrible, Yes, there are not enough decent centers in the league as it is and even some of the good one don’t have a good post game like Noah for example.
Robert Crumb: You turned yourself into a comic hero?
Harvey Pekar: Sorta, yeah. But no idealized s***. No phony bulls***. The real thing, y'know? Ordinary life is pretty complex stuff.

Pek is one of the best players in the league this season. Amongst players with over 200 minutes this season, Pek is fourth in WP48 (behind Lebron, Chandler, and CP3).
I was literally thinking about this in the shower
Yes, I think of Pek in the shower. LOL
Seriously, he will need to find away to get better defensively I was thinking that mgmt needs to give him video of all the awesome defense that Kendrick Perkins has played through out his career to get an idea what he needs to be to take it to another level.
Like Perk he will never be shot-blocker so he has to learn to be an above average defender in other ways. Frankly, same goes for Kevin- he needs to spend his offseason truly acquiring that ‘small area quickness’ so he can be a better defender on his rotations and such.

Honestly he’s a great option on offense, gets rebounds and plays solid positional defense, cuts off driving lanes and challenges (doesn’t block) shots. I’ll extremely happy with the way he’s playing.

Critical mass
The Wolves may have finally achieved critical mass as a frontcourt. Despite mobility issues, dominant size has the effect of covering a lot of territory,.

Not size
But dominant strength and willpower IMO

I was stunned at how good his defense was last night.

Pek cutting off driving lanes and it is commendable. And there is something to be said for just being ginormous relative to everyone else out there. Still, if both he and Kevin improve defensively- Whoa!

We also need a consistent 3pt shooter to space the floor
other than Love. How would it be as a short term solution to get someone like Kapono? He does not get any minues in the Lakers , he has some size. I have hardly ever seen him play, unless he’s such a stinker in defense he’d be an improvement to Ridnour or Wes playing the 2…
