Scrappy Report Card of .500 Again! – MIN vs PHI

The Timberwolves and Sixers put on a show sunday night. It was dirty and scrappy, and it was close all night, but somehow the Wolves pulled it out. Without the Frontcourt outright dominating, how were they able to pull it out? To tell you the truth, I have no idea.

I’m not sure if the Wolves deserved to win this one, but hey, scoreboard!

Now onto the grades…

Star-divide

KLove - 41 min, 20 pts on 7/23 FG, 6/8 FT, 15 Reb, 2 Ast, 1 Lin

Grade: C+

This one was a tough one for me. I would probably give him a C for the first 3 quarters, and an A for the 4th. That averages out to about a C+.

Now this may seem quite low, and Love was very beastly in the 4th, but keep in mind that he went 7 of 23 to get 20 points. Not the efficient Love that we’re used to. I think that this has to do with the fact that he was settling for iso midrange jumpers all night long—I would guess his conversion rate on these is abysmally low, if my memory serves me correctly. Once the big man started driving and posting inside, he got his.

He also had 15 rebounds in the game, including grabbing the miss with a little over 3 seconds left to secure possession. Overall, good 4th from Love, but he seemed to have a bad night overall.

Rubio - 37 min, 22 pts on 7/17 FG, 6/6 FT, 6 Reb, 5 Ast, 1 Lin, 1 Steal, 2 blocked attempts

Grade: B

According to NBA.com this is the first time Rubio has scored 20 points or more in 4 and a half years. While it was nice that he kept us in the game early and was efficient, he ended the game 7/17 from the floor. He got a couple of nice looks for Pek in the 3rd quarter, saved some loose balls and seemed to do okay throughout the game.

I recall on one of Holiday’s post-ups, Rubio gambled for the steal, leaving Holiday an easy path to the hoop. Didn’t really like that lapse from our young PG.

Big Bear Pek - 37 min, 17 pts, 4/7 FG, 9/10 FT (!!!), 9 Reb,1 Ast, 2 Blocks, 3 Lins

Grade: B

Looked like Pek had kind of a bad game tonight, but after looking at the boxscore and thinking back…

The Big man was a force tonight. He Beat up on some guys down low all night and set some good picks, and had a pair of blocks. Pek went 4 of 7 from the field and probably would have gone 9 of 12 had the 76ers not hacked him on several of his bunnies.

He had the ball popped out of his hands and turned it over 3 times though, so he’s gotta get better at watching from behind.

The biggest positive from Pek for me was that he went 9 of 10 from the line. I repeat: Our big scary bear had a nice enough stroke to go 9 of 10 from the line. Gotta love Pek!

Ridnour - 30 min, 10 pts, 5/10 FG, 3 Reb, 3 Ast, 1 steal

Grade: B

I honestly don’t remember much from Rid this game. I think he had some nice shots and got his hands on the ball from D but that’s about all I remember.

Wes J: 22 min 0 points, 0/4 FG, 1 blocked dunk, 2 Reb, 2 TO, 2 Lins, 1 block

Grade: C+

Pretty good defense on Iggy throughout the game, as well as a nice block, but…

He went 0 of 4 and had his dunk blocked. He also had some lax passes and I just didn’t feel very good when he was handling the ball. We all know Wes’ problems. If only he could start hitting his jumpers…

JJ Barea – 21 min 14 pts 6/12 FG, 2 Ast, 1 Lin

Grade: B

Barea had a hot hand throughout the game and kept us in it in the 3rd (pretty sure it was the 3rd). He became a little bit of a ballhog, though, though I guess that’s his game. Decent impact and did his job.

Lion- 18 min, 2 pts, 1/3 FG, 3 Reb, 1 Lin

Grade: D

D for DWill. Sorry man, but you’ve gotta make use of your minutes. I recall him awkwardly driving and then turning it over…And not much else. He was out there with the small Love at C lineup which I thought was interesting. I guess RA realized that Pek wasn’t being hugely effective so he went small.

Also, did anyone else catch that one of the advert songs was called "Lion Uncaged" or something like that? Too funny.

Beas - 11 Min, 4 pts 2/6 FG, 4 Reb, 2 Blocks

Grade: C+

Good defense, or at least I remember good D. I don’t remember much on offense except for some long twos. Obviously RA wasn’t pleased as he only got 11 minutes.

Webster - 21 min, 3 pts 1-3 FG, 5 Reb 2 Steals 1 Lin 1 Block

Grade: F

While Webster had some nice passes, and while he did hit a 3….He didn’t hustly back on D on the errant pass. This earns him an F, because I distinctly remember Martell hanging out with JPete and friends on the postgame showa few games ago, and they did a little clinic on getting back on defense. I also remember him saying that it is inexcusable to not get back when its your responsibility. Cmon Martell, you know better!

Darkeem - 0.0016667 min, 1 gamewinning SWAT

Grade: A+

Darkeem had near infinite production tonight. In .1 seconds he did exactly what he was asked to do, and he did it emphatically. Well done.

(sidenote: could he have earned his starting spot back with this gamewinning play?)

RA

Grade: A

Maybe this is too high but man I love having a coach who actually makes adjustments. RA seemed to be pretty smart tonight with his timeouts and substitutions. I’m not that great of a basketball mind though so that’s about it. I'm neutral about the end of game foul situation.

76ers – Scrappy. Team play. What struck me most about this team was that no one really stood out in terms of scoring the ball. It seemed like whenever the 76ers got a basket, the bucket was credited to the homogenous 76ers mass. Or something. They did a great job for most of the game of keeping Pek and Love out of the paint and in check. Also, Iggy is really, really good.

76ers SBN Board - Salty, but good intentions.

Alpha Wolf award goes to DARKO for the gamewinning play.

Thanks for cranking this out so quickly...

We can’t get enough of our Wolves sugar these days. Good grades, although I disagree on Wes and Martell. They’re both a D. I’ve finally arrived at the fact that they are the same crap, just with slightly different “strengths.”

usually I find that most of these give out higher grades than I would

but I have the opposite reaction to yours. Even if you are grading on expectations, the same grade for Love, who had a huge impact on the game, and Johnson and Beasley…no. I can’t see that. Same grade for Rubio, who was frankly a monster in this game (and deserved an A- at least) and Ridnour?

Also, I disagree that Love was relying on the midrange jumpers early; without looking at the chart, it just seemed like there was a lid on for him. Several missed layups that he usually converts, I thought.

Also, according to my box score, Rubio had 1 turnover, not 6.

Thanks for the report. It was a scrappy, exciting win over a very good team.

I've changed my sig. The Wolves are now like a reasonably decent meal.

by Eric in Madison on Feb 19, 2012 11:22 PM CST reply actions

Thanks for that correction.

As I was writing this I thought my grades would get a little bit of a reaction, but imo, no one really played all that well in this game or stood out. Sure, guys had maybe 1 or 2 good quarters, but I don’t think anyone had a completely good game. Maybe Rubio but that’s probably it.

If I'm pissing you off its probably sarcasm

I suspect that Love might give himself a worse grade.

By the end of the third quarter he seemed dismayed that he couldn’t score. I think your grade was fair, and yet I felt that in a strange way this was one of his most telling performances. The fourth quarter showed the absolute hugeness of his basketball heart. He made shots that had to be made if the Wolves were going to win. On the final drive the path was open because the Sixers absolutely had to be all up on him. Iggy had to try and jar the ball loose because he was going to score if he didn’t (or someone was going to have to foul him at the rim.) Iggy couldn’t knock it loose and the ref had to call the foul because the ball was in Kevin Love hands and they weren’t giving it up. All Iggy accomplished was making Love’s rise to the rim look awkward and make it look that much more like a foul. The two free throws were not gimmies, He made them because he had to. That’s what a great player does.

These grades are within reason.

I was a little skeptical of your grade for Barea, because it seemed like he never passed the ball. But he got two assists! How did that happen? I must have missed something.

I'm going to brag. I drive the Nikola Pekovic fanwagon.

The Wolves won

Because the starting five minus Wes and plus J.J. played well. Forty -six points from our point guard trifecta, and Love/Pek were 15-18 from the line. I’m willing to bet that according to Doug Collins’ game plan, if the Wolves were going to win, that’s pretty much how they were going to hav to do it. Ricky answered the challenge right off. I’ll also bet he wouldn’t have believed the TWolves could win if they missed 13 of 16 3pt attempts. One other thing, the Wolves only had three second half Lins which was probably a reflection of who didn’t get pt in the second half. The core of this team is solidifying.

I have to say I was excited to see what you would bring to the report card table...

I’m trying to figure out if I’m surprised or not that you were a relatively harsh grader based on what I’ve been accustomed to seeing from you over the last several months. In retrospect, I suppose I could have predicted you would be tough. Thank you for this report card and your insight.

I approve strongly of your report card format

Kevin Love can step his game up when it matters, damn he was awesome in the fourth.

It is a source of great pleasure to me that this team can win without shooting the lights out. Early on last night I said that we would never beat Philly – glad to be so brutally wrong again – but by the fourth I was actually quite confident they’d pull it out.

You’ve been a bit harsh on Ricky with 22, 5, and 6 and only 1 Linover! That’s an A range game especially considering he put the team on his back with scoring in the first and passing in the third.

Ridnour played very well, in my opinion.

Since I haven't been able to watch this or the Houston game,

I really appreciate the writeups to give me a sense of how things played out. You likely graded a few folks lower than I might have,CJ2, but I think that’s likely due to my elevated opinion of this team since Rambis departed. I find it difficult to give even Wes and AR less than a C, because we are actually a .500 team this year! Phily was a great win against a quality opponent and I appreciate your insight on the game!

Ricky is lobbing at an Ooptimal level!

Can someone reconcile the time remaining

v. the reaching foul against Love. If Kevins arm was pulled with .01 left then according to the photos I’ve seen he never would have gotten a shot off before time expired.
This doesn’t seem likely but unless he was actually releasing the ball when fouled (which he wasn’t) the .01 makes no sense. There is no continuation after a buzzer.
Was Kevin going to get this shot off in time?

Nice job coffee

I think I have to grade Love a bit higher. 12 in the fourth and demanding his will with a few seconds left then finishing the pressure free throws mitigates a poor shooting night overall.
His standards are high but he is testimony to great players whom find a way to win even when they are not at their best.
If Web gets an F based on one play I’ll give Kevin an A based on one play (and a gutty fourth quarter). After all, some of his best performances are higher than A+ by standard grading measures.

Wolves 2011-12: Crossing the Rubikahn....alea iacta est...... " et tu Ricky?"

by Tangerine dream on Feb 20, 2012 8:26 AM CST reply actions

Good write-up

Specificly:

“Darkeem” is hilarious.

Like that you nailed The Hair for not getting back on D, especially considering that was one of the Wolves’ points of emphasis for the game.

Rubio: 22, 6, 5 with only 1 Lin? Tough grade, but he’s an exchange student so he likely accepts the grade without complaint and resolves to work harder next time.

Your Love grade is accurate if you average the whole night. But if you weight the 4th quarter as the most important (hell, or even as the only one worth grading), the I’d give him an A.

When was this Advent song played?

Finally, just wondering – would CH melt or explode if C-Lion uses a cage as one of his props next weekend?

We're in a sad state when

0/4 with no points, 2 rebounds, 2 TO’s, and a block gets a C+ from a starter. It’s even sadder when I can’t argue that he was better than he normally is this game.

by BeasleBong on Feb 20, 2012 8:55 AM CST reply actions

Right

I didn’t mean to question the grade. It was more an indictment of Wes/our roster. It’s an unfortunate situation to have to place a grade on a 3rd grader who by some administrative error is taking advanced calculus.

Ouch

I hope Wes didnt read that

by WolvesBigTicket on Feb 20, 2012 10:32 AM CST up reply actions

Love should have a much higher grade

Granted, his shots weren’t falling in the first three quarters. Happens to everyone. But he kept his chin up and carried the team in the fourth. That DOES NOT happen to everyone. That only happens to stars. Imo, that is what separates Love from other good PFs like Blake – he can be counted on to make it happen when it counts and the game is on the line. The last possession play was a smart move and we would not have won otherwise. The initial shot was not there so he lowered his head and took the hack. It takes serious guts to pass up a buzzer beater attempt to roll into traffic with no time left and pray. AND THEN knock down the high pressure free throws to get the W. Love did not have his best game, but he did show his best example of why is a superstar.

by spinozagreen on Feb 20, 2012 8:58 AM CST reply actions

I think this

is why you would give him an A grade as a player but this is a grade for the game. He had a very poor shooting game for three quarters but that happens to players, his 4th quarter shows a lot more about his long term worth to the team but if you take it as a whole game it wasn’t his best by a long shot.

by Ineffable on Feb 20, 2012 9:17 AM CST up reply actions

This is why he got the low grade

If Love had hit just half of his shots (and maybe a 3) in the first few quarters, the Pups would have won by much more.

I think this is the Kobe syndrome where people approve of Kobe chucking his teams out of games as long as he hits 5 or 6 in a row at some point during the game. The game is 48 minutes long, not 12, and Love had (overall) not one of his best games. Would you rank this anywhere near those 10/15 30 something point 15 rebound games that he has had this year? I wouldn’t, personally.

If I'm pissing you off its probably sarcasm

by CoffeeJanitor on Feb 20, 2012 9:21 AM CST up reply actions

I'm with you

I like the Love grade. I think some people don’t like the grade partially because they don’t see Love as a C+ player which he isn’t.

I also think you had some other really good grades partially because this shows that our expectations of this team are higher than they used to be. Last season if they did this they probably would have gotten higher grades because it would have been so unexpected but now that we see more of what certain players are capable of we should expect more from them.

by Ineffable on Feb 20, 2012 10:00 AM CST up reply actions

Just that if you give Love a C+ based on this scale

You can’t give Wes a C+. If he put the clamps on Iggy fine, but his offense didn’t exist. So unless everyone is on their own curve Wes would be a C- or D and so would Beast .
But again, I get all of the logic.

Wolves 2011-12: Crossing the Rubikahn....alea iacta est...... " et tu Ricky?"

by Tangerine dream on Feb 20, 2012 10:09 AM CST up reply actions

I would agree with this.

Everyone was close to where I would place them, but Kevin Love’s impact on the positive result was significantly higher than Wes’. I try to support Wes when I can. I recognize he had a few very solid defensive plays, but his offensive night was an F(although the Refs probably could award a foul on his missed dunk). I probably would have given Martell a D-(had some good plays), Wes a C-, Love a B or B- and Rubio a B+. Rubio’s offensive output was solid and he would have more assists if not for the hacking on the interior guys. Rubio also saved a turnover from Wes with an outstanding behind the back pass falling out of bounds. Rubio’s biggest issue was Jrue having surprising success, buy since the Wolves won, I’d give Rubio a slightly better grade on his career best 22 point night. Those are modest tweaks I might have made, but nice job. I do enjoy all the report cards, so thanks for doing them.

Remarkable. It will be fun to start looking at everyone’s win projections done prior to the season. I’m pretty sure a few people have already been eliminated.

I'm not saying Rambis can coach because he's proven he can't coach well,

but Rubio over Flynn is an astronomical difference. Pek’s development must be catching Rambis completely by surprise, although if he were a good coach, he would have known the talent was there. I like the grading scheme

I can’t remember if I said this on here before but I like the individual grading scales, for example we’ve come to expect A/B’s from Love so if he plays worse then that then he gets a lower grade and the same way we’ve come to expect C/D’s from Wes and if he plays better then that he gets a higher grade.

by Gophers12 on Feb 20, 2012 12:33 PM CST reply actions

Good grades overall

One thing I saw was that Pek was hacked to bits every time he got the ball down low and not just on several of his bunnies. That was the only strategy that the Sixers could devise to stop him with their version of post players.
It usually went something like this:
Ball goes in to Pek
A guard or two comes in and starts hacking at the same time the post player is also hacking.
and the results were:
Refs blow the whistle
or
Refs ignore the hacking because they figure that a man that big can’t be disturbed by all of this
or
Pek manages to get the ball in the basket anyway.
I kept wondering why they went away from pounding the ball in down low in the 4th. The Sixers had no way to stop him.

by hoopsfan1 on Feb 20, 2012 1:58 PM CST reply actions

I thought the sixers were doing a good job of denying entry.

I also thought that, on that dunk attempt, that must have been a really hard smack to get Pek to change direction in midair.

Just seemed like the Wolves were really settling for a stretch.
Was that the dunk attempt where he was hacked by two people? That was clearly just an attempt to foul him so hard that he couldn’t even get the ball up in the air.

I had the game on in the background but was not able to focus as much as I usually like to due to social circumstances so it’s nice to have this format to round out my understanding of what went down. Needless to say I am happy with the win over a quality team.
