Pek's WS/48 and PER overtook Rubio's for the first time this season. The gap is closing in terms of WP/48 as well.

Pek's 61.4 TS% and 19.2 OReb% are the stuff of legend. If he can just cut back a little bit on TOs and PFs, we may have a legitimate stud C on our hands.

hasn't caught him in wp48 yet

but it’s getting close. I really think Adelman needs to step up his minutes because the big man is producing.

He may struggle defensively

But if he can continue rebounding and scoring and is improving defensively that is fine for me.

Getting 10 & 10 out of the C spot with good shooting %s is a great thing.

Pek is never going to be a shot blocker, but it seems like the evidence is mixed on whether that is actually a big help. I am more worried about him denying low post position to bigs and rotating over to help stop penetrating smalls.

yeah

you can live with so-so defense with amazing ts% and rebounding, especially in light of darko.

His so-so defense does seem frustrate opponents

Wasn’t there a quote from the LA game praising him being taken out? Although his defense is not the best it is physical.

Apparently

Andrew Bynum said, “Thank God they took Pekovic out.” I can understand why that would be a good thing (in Bynum’s mind) even setting aside his defense, Pek is a load to deal with.

Of course

Anthony Randolph came in as his replacement, so its sort of understandable

Yup.

And it took Mike Brown nearly the entire 4th quarter to realize he had a mismatch…

I'll take his maybe somewhat questionable defense

over Darko’s unquestionably terrible offense at this point. Pek is getting better and I think will be a decent defender. Darko is still busy throwing up hook shots that fall short every.damn.time.

by MNHawkeye on Feb 2, 2012 9:54 AM CST up reply actions

The thing I like about Pek

Is that he seems to be fairly consistent in several areas. He is physical every game, is usually fighting hard to establish low post position every game, shoots well most of the time, and makes an effort to get up and down the floor considering his size.

One area where I think he helps Love is that Love is not the only guy absorbing abuse in the rebounding scrum; Pek can help in that area. Also, Love seems to be a slow starter sometimes. He doesn’t really get going until the 2nd or 3rd quarter. Pek seems like he is ready to play from the start.

I’d like to see most of Darko’s minutes go to Pek and a bunch of Love’s and Beasley’s post up touches as well. Love does a great job hitting open shots on kick outs, catching tough passes on the move & coverting, and putting back offensive boards for buckets. I’m not as big on his sticky-fingered post game right now. Very Beasley-esque, and it did us no favors last night. When Pek gets it, it is generally 3 feet from the basket and he scores. If he can’t put up a good shot, he generally passes the ball.

Pek's too big to be inconsistent

Pek is. That is all.

Agreed

This is what I can’t fathom with Darko/Pek. RA has an old-school philosophy whereby you go inside early in attempt to make the defense loosen up outside. If this is going to continue to be the early game set up then how in the bleep can you continue to use Darko in the post as your “go-get-easy-post-buckets-guy”???? It simply astounds me. SInce Pek has been back he is, quite obviously, our best player in the block and yet the first 6 minutes of games starts with Darko half-hooks that fall off the front of the rim.

PLEASE Give us more immovable Pek deep setups in the block for easy 2s and scrap the finger rolls and half-hooks of Darko.

I too am a lone wolfpack.

It’s only because Pek’s standing on the kid’s shoulders.

Thanks for that!

I didn’t mind having six of those smaller ones on the screen, but the big one is better.

I often go back and forth between WS and WP...

But WP is better reflecting my sense of the unicorn’s value. Right now, it has us with three players significantly above average (Love, Rubio, and Pek in that order), with Ridnour slightly above average, and Williams, Ellington, and Randolph slightly below average (followed by Webster). The rest of the team is well below average. That all seems about right to me from the eyeball test. And eventually minutes need to reflect those numbers.

Silly of me to second guess RA, but Pek really should be getting Darko’s minutes.

by PoundFoolish on Feb 2, 2012 3:47 PM CST reply actions

This is where these production/efficiency metrics get a little squirrely

in terms of making a comprehensive assessment of a player’s impact. How much of his O-reb % is attributable to Love’s presence? And how much of his TS% is due to Rubio? To his credit, unlike Darko, he actually takes advantage of playing with Love and Rubio by being able to cash in on the opportunities they present to him. Let’s hope it continues. He’s been a nice bright spot, but I’d put him a distant third behind Love and Rubio in terms of his overall team impact.

by Rascal Flatts on Feb 2, 2012 3:51 PM CST reply actions

I think Rubio is a huge part of Pek's success so far.

Ricky just knows how to feed the post, and Luke’s been following his example. Without good point guard play, Pek isn’t going to score much, but with Rubio he can really impact a game.

I especially agree on the TS%...

I am actually working on my own metric stat right now. One of the key things it does is value “shot creation” both by the shooter and the passer. I think the single biggest issue with WP48 is that it overvalues players who are assisted on a high percentage of their efficient shots.

Pek is a legit C

Certainly not the second best player on our team though. Maybe 4th or 5th

Who would you put ahead of him?

It’s a serious question. I can’t think of anyone other than Love and Rubio who have matched his production and (recent) consistency.

I would put him in a distant third.

by vjl110 on Feb 2, 2012 4:28 PM CST up reply actions

Love, Rubio, Ridnour

If he can get his fouling under control and keep this up, he will be ahead of Rid.

JJ is an incomplete right now as well.
