If you couldn't compute the Denver game....

So we'll just say it. Kevin Love and Ricky Rubio sucked tonight. Love scored 10 points on 3-14 shooting. Rubio had 6 turnover and went 1-6 on his free throws.

But hey, the Wolves still won, scoring 36 fourth quarter points behind the NBA's new super trio of....Derrick Williams, Luke Ridnour, and JJ Barea!

Yeah. Compute that.

Congrats to Luke! It felt great watching him and AT and Webster embrace right after, especially considering the tough times they’ve been going through this season. I have no idea how we pulled it out (looks like the jazz fans think the refs screwed them), but that was awesome.

Been wondering when someone would track plays from timeouts this year.

I haven’t seen a game in like two weeks, but this seems like a natural thing.

For example, the other day when Love sank the free throws to win, that was off a play that looked like the one that beat the Clippers, only Adelman changed it up.

How often do the Wolves get their (acts) together out of stoppages? How does that compare to last season’s 0% rate?

The last thing we want to do is take long twos. It's still on our list, though.

by feral on Feb 23, 2012 1:13 PM CST up reply actions

I haven't seen too many fading threes by a well covered Beasley/Luke for the win

The Clipper play was by far my favorite though. Rubio and another small guy (Luke?) set an NFL wedge-style pick on basically the entire painted area. Jordan realizes too late that his man, Love, is about 3 feet behind the 3 point line. As he struggles to get past the wall Love drains it. Poetry, and a hearty ‘good job’ to little guys trying to hold picks against guys that outweigh them by 50+ pounds.

The Utah feed showed a closeup of Love

on the bench in the 1st, pulling his head out of a towel, and the announcers (two insufferable blowhard homers) commented on him looking ragged. And he did. One made a commnet about how you cauldn’t have him play all those minutes. The other had some comment about having Milsapitis, continuing their running commentary about how Milsap routinely dominates Love. Major point was that Love did look flu-ridden.

the 3 is the key to his everything

if he can hit 35% or higher in his career from three’s he has a chance to score a freaking hell of a ton of points. If he can’t hit a productive amount of three’s he is probably going to be a fairly pedestrian PF because he isn’t overly big.

the 3 allows him to set his defenders up and open the lane. it helps develop the rest of his game.

This was the "taste" game for Williams

if potential does exist this was certainly a glimpse at what he could do with his talents. Hits a three, gets to the line, scores with pretty tip-top efficiency

all things considering, this would probably be the game tape I’d send to teams to try and trade high for him.

speaking of selling high and buying low, I don’t know where Gordon Hayward or Alec Burks stock is….but I’d have to believe one of those two is fairly gettable at a reasonable price…I’ve been a fan of both of their games and while they aren’t going to be the knockout punch that takes us too the Finals (although they very well might help get there) they could certainly be upgrades

He’s a rookie with a team that has a new coach in a strike shortened season. He didn’t forget to play basketball overnight. It’s up to management & the coaches to make sure he gets a chance to play, and maybe more importantly, play through his mistakes. 13 & 9 with a 14. Position Redundancy be damned, he needs to get 20 minutes every night so we can see what we have in the 2nd pick of the draft

Look, it's possible to have a 3 man rotation of Love, Pek and Williams (as Junior member)

With Williams getting 22 minutes a game. The problem is that he has to show he deserves them. Tonight he absolutely did. A little surprised they didn’t go back to Pek (for Love), but Love is still your best player.

I'm going to brag. I drive the Nikola Pekovic fanwagon.

by Cynical Jason on Feb 22, 2012 10:30 PM CST up reply actions

More so what I meant was

My guess is at the onset of the season the thinking of Adleman and Co. was to ease Williams in initially and when he was ready try to give him 30 or more minutes a night playing kind of a hybrid 4 position while moving Love to the 5 or spelling Love while Williams is on the court.

I think once Pek blew up and Williams didn’t initially overly impress (however I will adamantly point out that when he has played 25 or more minutes in a game he has indeed produced) it became increasingly a challenge to find consistent minutes for Williams which has lead to his inconsistent (and essentially just blah) play of the past few weeks

It’s not like it’s Pek’s fault Williams isn’t playing. There is nothing more awesome than to have the center position locked up for the next 8 years in my mind…it just is what it is that potentially one of our best players in Williams’ best position is the same position as our best player

I usually think Zach gets it right, but that take was just wrong. Because you are defying your own career numbers and have fallen below expected percentages, you should stop shooting 3s?

Yikes. I mean, normally they get things inside fairly successfully with Pekovic and Love, but you can’t go there every possession; it isn’t like those guys (especially Love) are hurting for usage. Gotta have some balance, and 3s are part of winning NBA offense.

Great that it won them the game last night.

In the early part of the season

I thought Tolliver set a good example by being ready for Rubio kickouts and always choosing the 3 over something off the dribble. As his shot stopped falling, he started doing things he can’t do (dribble penetrate) and now he’s on the bench, possibly for the rest of his Wolves career. I think the more limited Wolves (all of the wings) would be well served to have their hands ready and their feet behind the line for any time Ricky is wheeling around the frontcourt looking for shooters.

He's 3 for 11 from downtown

in his last 3 games and 74 minutes of action.

If he makes even 1 more of those, he’s hitting at an average clip. I wouldn’t get too concerned about the number of 3’s he’s shooting—just maybe that he’s missed open corner 3’s in clutch moments of each of the last 3 games. That, to me, is a little bit troubling—still have to take the shot when it’s there, though. If you’re an NBA wing and refuse to shoot the corner 3, you’d better look something like Dwyane Wade off the dribble.

Suppose that’s were Adelman is a better coach than me. After a few of those misses I’m ready to pull guys.

Heck even JJ looks positively awful to start out last night.

by Rodman99 on Feb 23, 2012 11:38 AM CST up reply actions

I think where your point has some merit

is I just don’t believe Martell has in any way earned playing time yet.

I know Thrill may never be a true 3, but I just can’t see how playing him there is all that worse than anyone but Wes when Wes is out of the way on offense and only dunks

I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.

Hey

You forgot about Wes who was singlehandedly keeping minny afloat for a rather long stretch in the third on offense and defense.

What about Pek who helped wolves close utah’s half time lead extremely quick with 3? or 4? straight baskets?

by andrew33 on Feb 22, 2012 10:29 PM CST reply actions

Yes

Pek early in the 3rd and Wes in the middle of the 3rd absolutely kept the Wolves afloat by not permitting Utah to extend its lead. Then JJ and DWill took over in the 4th. DWill’s offensive rebound putback + the foul was a HUGE play, and highly athletic to boot

by Timberwolf in LA on Feb 22, 2012 10:33 PM CST up reply actions

I humbly bow to all fans

Who stayed and watched this game all the way through. It’s was so ugly for so long.

Utah looked like the Harlem Globetrotters making uncontested layups over and over and over again. Worst interior D I’ve even seen. For a good stretch Wes was our best player.

Peck played admirably but couldn’t protect the rim.
Love was getting his ass kicked.
Ricky played sloppy as hell.
Basket had a lid on it.

Then JJ started hitting 3s. Then Derrick Williams played like a beast. He was taking rebounds from people. Making shots. And we came back. And Luke finished it all off.

I am so happy I kept watching (I have a DVR and watched on delay so I can FF commercials, so there is an asterisk by me hanging in there). Remember thinking hey, it’s 13, it’s not over yet.

WHAT A GAME!

by Rodman99 on Feb 22, 2012 10:33 PM CST reply actions

I kept watching for the same reason

the Utah lead was never insurmountable given the time left on the clock. As painful as most of the game was, we were never out of it.

& totally agree with the “bizzaro” & “outlier” takes. That was an absolutely painful game to watch, through 40 minutes. And ended up being one of the nicest little buzzer beaters in my 20 years of watching this squad.

Luke really owns those little teardrops, doesn’t he?

It could either mean very few people left the arena or very few people were remaining in the arena. It is one of life’s greatest mysteries.

few!!

Crazy, but I saw very few people leave. If they were anything like me, they were amazed that the Wolves were somehow only down by 12 or whatever at various points in the game. Seemed like they should’ve been down more, and maybe we were all holding out hope, based on that alone.

Very funny – an elderly couple that exited the arena during the timeout with 7 seconds left & a chance to win.

Been to all but 4 games in 3 years

And have never left a game before the final buzzer. Most of those times I am not happy I stayed, but this year I always feel like we can come back. Tonight was epic.

Dthrill was a MAN tonight. Loved seeing Rubio and the whole bench goin nuts cheering through that comeback. We have some real team players!!

I watch this team, and i care so much, simply because i can’t not. It’s just a part of who i am..

by Love4MVP on Feb 23, 2012 12:03 AM CST up reply actions

also...

Not having the running stats in front of me, I was all but guaranteeing the friend I went with that the Wolves were over 20 turnovers by the end of the third period. I was quite surprised to see they only ended up with 17 turnovers. Am I the only one that thinks it seemed like a lot more? They couldn’t complete a bounce pass into the post to save their lives, it seemed.

Utah was more physical, taking chances, etc. But man, all that collapsing in the paint – must’ve been what freed up all those threes in the 4th.

by dontbesomean youngfella on Feb 22, 2012 10:36 PM CST reply actions

Does it seem like lately the Wolves have butter fingers?

We seem to have a tough time holding onto rebounds and loose balls. We also can’t seem to make layups. We make passes that are picked off relatively easily. Tonight, Barea, Luke and D-Will saved us. But I don’t like the trend.

by Are we cursed? on Feb 22, 2012 10:40 PM CST up reply actions

Tonight was ridiculous

There’s turnovers and then there’s bad turnovers. It was like we dribbled up and handed Utah the ball.

Tons of that. I thought that was a big part of why Ricky looked so bad.

Drove the hoop and tried to get foul calls, but got frustrated when they weren’t making them and let that get to him a lot. Wasn’t dealing well with the physical play.

The only bummer I see with our awesome chemistry

Is Beasley doesn’t seem part of it. Bums me out. He cheered some, but it’s like he’s not a part of the team. The core guys enjoy each other and pull for each other. Wes is a part of that group. Maybe that’s why he’s still playing.

by Rodman99 on Feb 22, 2012 10:52 PM CST up reply actions

I think Beas loves these guys and his a team player.. I really do..

it saddens me that he may have no place on this team. I remain one of the few who wants to pick up his options. I think his game is rapidly evolving, for better or worse, and I would like to see how it shakes out. He clearly is changing the way he plays per Adelman’s advice, and I feel it may be a matter of time before it comes together for him. I don’t want to lose him for nothing and have it come back to bite us.

by bsg007 on Feb 22, 2012 10:54 PM CST up reply actions

I'm a big Beas fan

He just seems out of it, lately. Even lazy the way he plays. I could be wrong, but I sense that he’s down because he’s really only had one big game this year.

by Rodman99 on Feb 22, 2012 10:58 PM CST up reply actions

I don't see it as lazy

More apprehensive. He’s trying to rework his game and do what’s being asked of him to fit with the scheme. Doesn’t always seem comfortable with it. I too really like Beasley and hope they keep working with him.

by saudagg on Feb 22, 2012 11:03 PM CST up reply actions

I see it too...

…in years past he would constantly Kobe-iso…this year he really seem s to be trying to pick his shots from within the offensive flow, not jonnystopping, reducing turnovers and improving his passing and court vision. He can still be completely maddening, but, man, I’d really like to screw the damn Heat by turning him into a damn fine and productive player.

by Boss10 on Feb 22, 2012 11:54 PM CST up reply actions

My favorite part of the game was listening to Beasley sing along with the band while warming up and talking with everybody during the game on the bench. The guys genuinely seem to love him. He just seems to be a lost soul in a basketball sense because he’s not fitting in very well on the court (and on the court his play defines his attitude). But I’m sure he’s still the same fun locker room guy he’s been.

I think he’s a proud kid and Faried showed him up. He looked a little tentative in the first half but he got it going in the fourth.

I think Beas is lost/dismayed. It was never going to be like this for him. He keeps expecting it to just happen. Sometimes I think that Adelman has cut his minutes and will slowly rebuild him. But I don’t know, maybe he’s just given him all the rope and now he’s in free fall.

B) I do worry we are still stick in Rambis-era mindset that we need to cultivate all these defensive players….we’re a pretty good defensive team. I think focusing on defense is not the correct way to look at building this club. now we can’t ignore defense, but to make a move with an emphasis on defense I don’t believe is the right way to look.
C) I think you put Eric Gordon’s perimeter scoring ability next to Rubio and Love and we legitimately are on OKC’s level
D) For as good defensively as Batum is defensively I doubt he’d be able to stop Durant over a 7 game series consistently enough. The thunder’s big three are just too potented, not sure what combination of players exist in the entire NBA that can stop them but Love/Rubio/Gordon/Pek no doubt in my mind can score with them

I would suggest that

Batum is prolly about the best player in the NBA to defend KD. There are not many players with his height/length/quickness/bbiq in the league.

I too am a lone wolfpack.

I don't disagree

I would still put my money on Durant getting his 25+ on him though

I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.

by VoodooMagic on Feb 22, 2012 11:27 PM CST up reply actions

If he has to take an extra shot or two to get those points

then the defender did his job. Nobody shuts down guys like Kobe, Durant, etc., but if you can make them work a little more and take tougher shots it helps you win. Tough defense on players that are capable of making tough shots is still plenty valuable.

by Dumbhead62 on Feb 22, 2012 11:32 PM CST up reply actions

I think my point is moreso....

why not pay Gordon the change and then your scoring is covered and then work to acquire a guy like Danny Green/Kawhi Lenoard/Marvin Williams/Jared Dudely quality role guys who play excellent defense but aren’t gonna cost you an arm and a leg to play the defense and hit corner three’s

We play good team defense, really if you put a compotent wing defender on Durant with the way we play D now I’d imagine almost any solid defender would get him to take that extra shot. just get a S load of solid wings to throw at him and save Gordon/Love/Pek to just score buckets on the other end to keep pace with them.

I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.

by VoodooMagic on Feb 22, 2012 11:36 PM CST up reply actions

Voodoo..

1) You need to go take a look at the offensive numbers Batum is posting
2) Batum is one of the BEST defenders in this league and is only going to get better
3) Batum would fit perfectly on this team for innumerable reasons
4) If I have the choice between Gordon or Batum I take Batum. If I have the choice between Gordon and nothing, I take Gordon.

by bsg007 on Feb 22, 2012 11:59 PM CST up reply actions   1 recs

The max? No question you take Batum over Gordon

but I still wouldn’t pay more than $14 million a year and I don’t think you should need to offer more than $12.5/year. Blazers aren’t going to match that. Blazer fans were thinking $10 million a year was too much for Batum a month ago. They might think differently now, but a max contract seems steep. Would not consider paying him more than Lebron or Rudy Gay.

Where the numbers breakdown

by VoodooMagic on Feb 23, 2012 8:20 AM CST up reply actions

oops sorry

where the numbers breakdown for me offensively is Batum plays a pretty low-usage role on the Blazers offensively. He basically only takes shots that a good NBA player should generally make, and he does and makes them. Which is great. He is an efficient scorer but has not done so with much being asked of him yet in his young career.

Eric Gordon on the other hand has spent most of his career being the lone offensive wing identity for his teams and has done so with solid efficiencey, nothing overly crazy in terms of numbers….but when you are the only ball-handler, distributer and scorer your offense has from the wing you take a beating and they throw guys at you all night long….so I would expect his metrics to be a little light

I think you pair either player with Rubio (i.e. Rubio takes the ball handling/distributing load away from Gordon) and Gordon is the one who will have the better metric’s. His usage will go down offensively and give him better overall looks and he will make them at a higher clip and score a butt load of points for us.

Efficiencey is great, but it is also important to factor team and role into the equation. Batum has spent his whole careerbeing a 7th and 6th man on a very professional basketball team while Eric Gordon has spent his whole career being either the only good offensive player or one of two good offensive players and essentially lottery teams.

This team just did in 34 games what it took last year’s team 82 games to do.

Worried about Milsap
Love has a tough time guarding him, Beasley doesn’t care enough to block him (or anyone) out. You read it here first: Williams plays a lot and has a big game tonight.

3 out of 4 against Houston, Philly, Denver and Utah. That’s not bad. Those are now the Wolves’ peers. Nice to actually have peers. That aren’t Sacramento.

They have scored and given up the exact same number of points over the last 3 games

Went 2-1. I’ll take it. All 3 of those were “either way” games; close games have a significant element of luck to them. Wolves missed out on a few early in the year, but are getting it back a bit.

3 pointers for the jazz

I only saw the boxscore tonight but I noted the Jazz were 1-7 on three pointers. Does anyone know if it’s normal for an nba team to shoot only 7 three pointers in one game?

by MarkGerard on Feb 22, 2012 11:50 PM CST reply actions

When they get whatever they want in the paint

The Jazz are an inside out team and they started off really strong inside so they just kept feeding it in. For the part I watched it didn’t seem like they were ignoring it.

Wes Johnson

He couldn’t guard Howard worth a crap, but other than that, I thought this was his best game. He didn’t make offensive mistakes, he rebounded some tough one high up (instead of all alone at his waste), and off the ball he was aggressive defensively. And he hit some shots If not for Howard killing him, I would have been the happiest I’ve been with him. What he did was repeatable and wasn’t about being “hot.”

Slow starts

From ESPN:

“The Wolves have fallen behind by 14 or more points in 12 of their last 21 games, but are 12-9 over that stretch. Their latest comeback was their largest of the season.”

Here’s an idea… how about not falling behind so often.

Great ending

I was over on SLC Dunk chatting with those guys on their game thread the whole second half. Nice ocmmunity over there, felt a lot like here, many of them made a note of Canis being a great site.

Barea really played fantastic tonight, and so did Derrick Williams. I felt like this was the longest Adelman has ever say Rubio in the fourth quarter, letting Luke and Barea get us back into the game with their hot shooting.

It was great for Derrick Williams to finally look like a star. He really went after boards. Came up with one huge block, too, which the Jazz got back, but it was timely and emphatic. Lately he has looked sort of unengaged and has not gone after balls I thought maybe he could get, but tonight he was locked in and programmed to destroy, it was good to see.

Watched the ending again.

Hayward was basically sitting on a chair when Luke went by him on a bicycle. Payback in one lump sum.

missed game live - at work during game

1. Tim, good work on 3pt shooting, Tex

2. reading CH game thread interesting 180 turn. There’s evidence of at least 2 CHers hold out for hope when things seemed bleak.

3. Batum for max money? Idk future implications. As long as Rubio and Pek stick around, all good

4. JJ is durty. He better watch out or else he might get a flying forearm clothesline mid air… oh wait.

5. Good win. Better wing play and solid rotations (so Love doesn’t have to log so many with the bird flu again) = playoff hunt, baby. Good work.

This is my opinion and does not constitute an endorsement, opinion or official position of the U.S. Army.
