Unofficial All-Star Saturday Night (Dunk contest, Skills & 3pt contest)

Let's hope the Wolves sweep the events! Any predictions for Derrick Williams? Maybe he'll bring out a caged lion and jump over it but seriously Ricky tweeted that he's involved which will probably benefit DWill a lot because the whole country of Spain will be voting for him. DWill also has the advantage that people actually know who he is, I'm not completely sure why Jeremy Evans is even in it, he doesn't even play at all in real games. This is a rather interesting group as none of them really have much 'starpower'.

Also I wish Ricky had participated in the Skills challenge, he would have dominated the passing aspects of it (however he'll be in it soon enough).

I thought he was the retired player for the Hawks haha

Last of the Next Jordans,

harbinger of an era of wing-starved teams out there.

The last thing we want to do is take long twos. It's still on our list, though.

Team Minnesota

Ridnour
JR Rider (if he’s not in jail)
Maya Moore

We couldn’t lose!

Release Wes. Sign Allan Houston.

He looks like he could still be playing today. 1 for 1 so far. Let’s go Kyrie!

Kyrie you let me down man.

I was thinking the same thing...

It also bugged me how none of those guys smiled during their introductions…maybe Tony Parker a little. At least look like you want to be there and have fun, and make it fun for the kid.

Wasn’t Ricky gonna be in it? What happened?

by MychalShannon1 on Feb 25, 2012 8:10 PM CST via mobile up reply actions

Ricky announced a few days ago that he had decided not to do it.

I don’t think a reason was given. Maybe he wanted to rest more and not stress out?

by wolver on Feb 25, 2012 8:12 PM CST up reply actions

Still would of been nice to see him in it. I hope he does it next year.

precisely what I was thinking...

truth be told I was also thinking that the pants on those girls could not have been any tighter (not that I’m complaining) and also…. where do all these girls come from (NBA cheerleaders, these dancers, etc.), because I definitely don’t see girls like this on a daily basis

a layin?

There’s a difference between a “layin” and a “throwdown”! Dwight was above the rim and threw in down in, like Griffin’s two amazing dunks. I don’t know how many NBA’ers could do what Howard did on that effort, but its a short list. That was no layin.

Pretty great. I am so glad I watched on DVR instead of live. Most of the rest of it was just painful. Felt bad for DWill on all those attempts at that third dunk.

Is bring in the best Dunkers in the country, NBA or not. Then have everybody STFU so they can dunk the ball.

Didn't think it could get worse than last year

I was wrong. I could only cringe when the glow in the dark basketball wasn’t even glowing in the dark during PG’s dunk. So stupid.

Was this a shot from Love at Randy Wittman?
“When I came out of the draft, I was told that I shouldn’t shoot 3s,” said Love. “It was motivation for me. I always knew I could shoot it and I didn’t think I had to stop, just because of my size or the position I played.”
Love spent his rookie season listening to critics and stayed close to the rim. After that, he strayed, and his career soared at the same time.

Anyone else remember Wittman talking about players on the team trying to shoot from three when they couldn’t make shots in the post?

The last thing we want to do is take long twos. It's still on our list, though.

by feral on Feb 26, 2012 5:56 AM CST reply actions

We get so hung up on how bad Rambis was

it’s easy to forget how terrible Wittman was as well, or even that he was around for the Love era.

If you want to remember, check out Bullets Forever sometime.

The Wizards are currently running Witt as Flip’s successor. His relationship with J. McGee is what you’d call “strained.”

The pre-ASG events have hit a new low.

Just terrible. And capped off by an embarrassment of a slam dunk contest. Sad thing is, this shit ain’t tough to set-up better. Get serious judges for the dunk contest, offer a $100k prize or so, let contestants decide to compete (sending in tapes for an invite), and tighten shit up (i.e., one, maybe two tries, at a dunk).

As is it is a total joke.

by PoundFoolish on Feb 26, 2012 9:16 AM CST reply actions

It's a totally League-run affair

Everything about this weekend speaks to an organization that honors itself by joining in the party and not doing their job. The “celebrity” game was an embarrassment because only one side prepared for it, and the junk sports competitions were staged hype with no substance.

Everything about the NBA is bush league, but what would you expect when the only “merit” hires are former superstar commentators?

Yo ho ho and a FirstRow stream!

by TMiss on Feb 26, 2012 9:59 AM CST up reply actions

Beyond the poor set up and the staging, the whole idea is weak.

In game dunks can be electrifying. Uncontested dunks in a contest are like Olympic diving off the side of the pool or a sliding competition in baseball. So it winds up being a bunch of blowhards hanging tinsel on a telephone pole.

The stars are scared

I’ve come to accept the dunk contest for what it is, but that was truly a snoozefest. As many have said before me, i think the way to improve the dunk contest is to get the stars involved. We all want to see LeBron, Wade, Wall, Rose, Westbrook, (other top player) out there doing their best dunks, but it’ll probably never happen. Why not? I have a theory and I’m sure I’m not the first to say it. It’s not because they need rest, or because it is an injury risk. It’s not because they want to give lesser known players a chance to make a name for themselves. It’s surely not because they are “preparing” for the all-star game the next night… I think it is because they are all afraid to lose the contest. Their egos are so fragile that they don’t want to actually put themselves out there and fail. It’s the same reason why most of the guys half-assed their way through the skills competition. Nobody wanted to be seen as actually caring and trying, but not winning. I mean did anyone look like they had a desire to win that skills competition? This is the only reason I can come up with to explain it. How else do you explain John Wall not being in the dunk contest? Did anyone else see him take every chance he could get the whole weekend trying to put on a one man dunk show? (I loved the steal from Greg Monroe by the way). Wall is out there dunking like a maniac, but he would shy away from any real competition because he might not actually win.

Anyone else have thoughts on this not so burning issue?
