K Love looks

My first thought was

I gotta say

I showed this pic to an ex-gf and she said
“Why are you holding a basketball, where was this taken? Wait, this is you right?”

I have the same build, hair color and hair-line as Kevin Love. Also being in Special Forces means I can sport facial hair (in A-Stan we all were required to have a beard.)

She confused me with Kevin Love and it made my whole year.

I just thought I would share…

I've got good judgement from experience and experience from bad judgement.

I don't want to make excuses for the guy; what he did was monstrous.

I’m just not sure people threatening violence against a violent guy with a long history of terrible family abuse is gonna solve anything. He clearly has anger issues, and exacerbating them is just gonna continue the same ugly cycle that has defined much of his life. I’m okay with simply holding him accountable, shunning him to the point where he realizes he has become what he hates, and hoping he finds some help.

In hip-hop beefs, there’s a chance someone’s going to pull a gun at some point (or at least there used to be (and I’m not calling that a good thing)), but on these Twitter things it’s just a bunch of posturing. No offense, but I get tired of these comments (I blame every Youtube video of a song made before the year 2000)

There is just as much good music these days as there was in decades past, and just as much shitty music. (The Osmonds existed. We must never forget.) Just because there is a lot of crappy popular music out there doesn’t mean that our generation is lacking in talented musicians. You just have to look for them. It’s like pulling off the interstate and seeing a McDonalds, then complaining about the town’s food without taking the time to look for the good local restaurants. Pop music, like fast food, is there for a reason.

by ManTastic on Feb 26, 2012 9:36 PM CST up reply actions

Yea, he’s definitely slowing down a bit. I don’t see him getting that 6th ring to tie Jordan either. Who do you think is the most clutch player in the league?

by MychalShannon1 on Feb 26, 2012 9:44 PM CST up reply actions

As much as I’d like to say Durant, I don’t think he has proven himself on the biggest stage yet. I might have to say DWade. And to think, i didnt even have him on my pseudo olympic lineup above.

by ManTastic on Feb 26, 2012 9:48 PM CST up reply actions

by Bad News Wolves on Feb 26, 2012 10:23 PM CST up reply actions

that would have been the best ending to regulation to an All Star Game in my generation

I was rooting for that too.

Its too bad LBJ passed in that situation. However, since he did, the question will be brought up sooner or later: Is that late-game pass by LBJ a microcosm of him? He seems to have a pattern of forgoing the shot – in preference to passing to a teammate in late game situations.

Was it an a product of “all star game showmanship”, or another example of LBJ not performing in late game situations?

I'm not creative enough to have a signature.

While I am sure I am in the minority ...

I no longer watch the all-star game. It is not remotely basketball. The whole weekend should be either shelved or completely revamped. None of it appeals to me. It is sloppy, vulgar excess. It plays to many of the negative ideas that some folks harbor towards the NBA. The game has become almost as irrelevant as the NFL Pro Bowl. The only slight exception of the weekend might be the Rising Stars game. It probably should be the only event. (& I didn’t watch that, either). I know none of this reform come to pass. Still, I will welcome the return of actual, you know, games.

Your Christmas must be one of those

where you think and wonder and wish about how all your family will come together, and how the kids’ faces will light up, and then your aunt comes to stay and smokes in your bedroom and the tree lights short out on Christmas Eve night.

It’s fun to take a break in the season and consider the halfway point, and mildly fun to talk about which players belong and which don’t, but I’m a huge basketball fan and I don’t make any effort at all to see the games. That’s leaving along the Saturday Night stuff, which is soooooo poor.

The last thing we want to do is take long twos. It's still on our list, though.

by feral on Feb 27, 2012 7:51 AM CST up reply actions

I feel sorry for you too, feral

And my Christmases are great, thanks.

I guess you guys just like a certain type of basketball. I enjoy watching the coordinated precision of a well-executed motion offense, excellent defense, etc., but sometimes I like to see the free-wheeling athletic exhibition that is the All Star game. The players obviously enjoy it, and if you actually watched the damn game, you would see the effort the put into entertaining the fans AND trying to win the game.

"Only God is an expert, Ernie."

by MNPhatz on Feb 27, 2012 10:02 AM CST up reply actions

You guys just seem curmudgeonly.

Do you get mad at dumb comedy movies? Is all new, popular music garbage in your opinion? Can you believe ho the kids are dressing these days?

Lets stop arguing about it, you are obviously set in your ways and have very specific requirements for your basketball entertainment – and hey, I think there is a kid on your lawn. You’d better go yell at them.

"Only God is an expert, Ernie."

by MNPhatz on Feb 27, 2012 10:12 AM CST up reply actions

Not at all

If you want to reinforce to non-NBA fans that the league doesn’t really follow any rules (they never call traveling, they never call ‘in the lane’, they don’t play defense, they don’t call fouls, etc), then the All-Star game is for you.

Part of it may be the parameters of basketball vs the other big-time pro sports. The baseball All-Star game is more constricted by the very structure of baseball itself. It more resembles an important ‘play to win’ game rather than a meaningless pickup game. I don’t watch the NHL or NFL all-star games, but I know that, particularly with the Pro Bowl, it is approaching the point where no one cares about it anymore. That includes the ‘fans’ and the participants. In the NFL, no one would challenge your love of the pro game if you said you disliked the Pro Bowl.

Each year the drumbeat grows louder that the dunk contest and some of the other fluff of the weekend is a boring waste of time. And, yes, you can be an NBA fan and not know or care who won the dunk contest or the behind-the-basket shooting contest. By the time the actual game arrives, fans have be subjected to boring celebrity games and novelty acts. By then, some have decided it isn’t worth the bother.

by ogishkemuncie on Feb 27, 2012 11:25 AM CST up reply actions

In the order you asked,

I mostly hate stupid comedy movies, but that’s mostly because the stupid ones are mean. For example, Adam Sandler’s movies seem to mostly star him being sullenly mean. I don’t get the appeal there. He’s a jerk, ha ha?

Popular music is fine with me as long as it’s got some hint of the whole singer-songwriter thing to it. I don’t have much time for overproduced stuff that’s completely about production values. That has no personality. Also music that amounts to nothing but an endless loop of egotistical trash talk bores me very, very quickly.

The current fashion thing that I just don’t get is the flat-ironed hair. It really doesn’t flatter anyone, and instead makes women look sort of…. shattered. That’s nothing to do with kids nowadays.

And I don’t know quite how to fix the NBA’s whole All Star thing, but it needs fixing. Yesterday’s All Star game barely beat out the Daytona 500. That’d sound okay, if only the race hadn’t been cancelled due to rain.

The centerpiece of Saturday was being openly sneered at by the TV announcers. Even when the league has what I thought might be a good idea, they somehow manage to squeeze the life out of the thing. HORSE should have been a free-wheeling thing, with players doing trick shots. Instead it wound up with a long back-and-forth thing where two players took the same routine three over and over again. Totally flat.

I don’t know, man, the whole thing is just flat like a bad tire. There’s a lot of build-up, and then pfft, every year for a while now.

The last thing we want to do is take long twos. It's still on our list, though.

by feral on Feb 27, 2012 12:22 PM CST up reply actions

This is just me the curmudgeon, but the prospect of a Daytona 500 run at maybe 57 MPH on a slick track?

Anchorman is the Citizen Kane of

absurd stupid humor movies. I mean really, really stupid. It fades a bit in the back half, but if you like that kind of comedy, you should consider testing your Will Ferrell tolerance and giving it a shot. Plus, then you’ll be in on a lot of jokes. It’s one of the bigger one-liner sources of its time.

Try watching it and asking: Where are the sympathetic characters?

Halfway through Ahnold drops a ball that’s supposed to get him the toy, and a little girl picks it up…. And leads him on a chase. ‘Cause it’s so fun to be mean to grown men?

Every character is vile. Every extra. All the Santas want to beat him up. It’s unreally mean.

And so stupid! How ‘bout at the end, in the parade, when his own kid doesn’t realize it’s him in the costume…. And momentarily looks like he’s going to beat up his best friend? Or how about the running joke where the superhero sidekick is always getting beaten up? So pointlessly mean, and stupid. But thank goodness we had Sinbad to SHOUT EVERY LINE. HA HA HA.

The reason I hate Sandler

is that he plays the obnoxious mean character that I don’t enjoy, but combines it with what seems to me to be this need to be beloved in each of his films. Now, I’m not familiar with all his works, so I’m sure other examples exist, but in the Sandler vehicles there is this formula for the lovable asshole that really doesn’t work for me. If he wants to go the Eastbound & Down route, that’s fine. Just don’t asked to be loved and adored at the end.

I aspire to be a troll

and to burnish my credentials let me again point out that the NBA has chosen to sequester its games behind a paywall, allowing only “paying” fans (i.e., those with cable or dishes) to watch the games.

If NCAA Lacrosse was reliably shown on b’cast tv, it would be the next big sport. The NFL and MLB bigfoot the NBA and NHL because b’cast tv gets the biggest audiences by default.

The NBA All-Star game is an inside joke, played not for the glory, but because it’s an excuse for all the cool NBAers to party for one weekend in the middle of the season. Everything about this weekend was second- or third-rate, and the game itself only became watchable after the West shamed the East into bringing their real game in the second half.

Stern is murdering the NBA at the owners’ insistence. It’s time for a new league, one in which cities/states own the teams and the players get what’s left over after arena costs and team expenses (but they get ALL of what’s left over). The profit motive has no place in sports, and is responsible for all the crap we hate about the NBA. Winning and making money are not the same things, and that’s what screws everything up.

Yo ho ho and a FirstRow stream!

Because the government has such a great track record of running things

If people don’t like the product they can watch something else. I’d rather have the free market determine what goes on with sports instead of government bureaucrats.

I've got good judgement from experience and experience from bad judgement.

by ArchAngel79 on Feb 27, 2012 9:02 PM CST up reply actions

I'd like our government-regulated (it's never going to be "free") economy to run as smartly and efficiently as possible. I think that's something we can all agree on.

This whole “government v. free market” dichotomy is made up and incorrect. The differences between what everybody wants aren’t as big as the overblown terms we use to discuss them. I want the government run better, whether that means its role increases or decreases for any given thing.

Gary, you didn't kill your brother. Those gorillas did.

See, even after I acknowledge you contribute to this blog . . .

AND suggest we agree to disagree, you have to keep going on and on and talking about my Christmases.

You think just because you aren’t Chuck D, you aren’t acting like a troll? You are writing in an All Star Game thread and complaining about how awful the All Star Game is, not to mention suggesting my Christmas is unpleasant because the All Star Game is SOOOOOO horrible.

In response to ogishkemuncie, and sort of to Cynical Jason (whom I respect for his wit) as well, I wrote:

“I feel sorry for you and others who don’t get the all-star game.
The greatest pick up game in the world thrills me annually. It’s like my Christmas.”

Meaning, the All Star Game is one of the happiest days of the year for me, and I honestly feel bad for people who don’t get the same amount of pleasure from watching the game that I do.

Then you wrote:

“Your Christmas must be one of those where you think and wonder and wish about how all your family will come together, and how the kids’ faces will light up, and then your aunt comes to stay and smokes in your bedroom and the tree lights short out on Christmas Eve night.”

That is some rude, sort of off-the-wall stuff to write. Instead of getting too riled up about it, I just teased you about being a curmudgeon, which seemed to go right over your head as you could not have given more predictably curmudgeonly answers to my rhetorical questions.

As my man Charles Barkley said to Shaq recently, “Just let it go.” I suggest we just never speak of these posts ever again.

Fair enough.

Again, you have my pity. Have you seen the Boondocks episode where are young Colonel Stinkmeaner looks out at the ocean during a marvelous sunset, a dolphin jumps out of the water, and turns around and mutters, “Aw, that’s some old bullshit.”? To me, the amazing feats of athleticism displayed in the All Star Game are wonders marbles of nature, similar to sunsets and beautiful wild animals. But, to each their own.

I almost always enjoy your comments on Canis Hoopus. I think you are witty, and you are snarky without being rude, so of course your opinions are welcome. I think of you as a funny curmudgeon. Would you agree?

"Funny curmudgeon."

I’d accept that. One of my friends once called me the nicest asshole he knows, and I can’t argue with that, either.

I read the Boondocks strip years ago, but I haven’t seen a second of the show. I take it you judge it worth watching. I’ll have to take a look. I thought McGruder was a visionary along the lines of Bill Watterson back when he started, and he was so young it pissed me off.

I love the Boondocks cartoon.

The Stinkmeaner episodes are my favorites. They feature absolutely amazing voice acting by Cedric Yarbrough (he is the black cop on Reno 911, and he is from Minnesota!). As an animation aficionado, I really appreciate the job he did.

I love the kung fu action sequences. I love the humor. Aaron McGruder writes most of the episodes. I gotta warn you, however: the show is potentially offensive to a lot of people.

Odd thing about New Year's.

Even with a host like Clark, it seemed like they didn’t play up “New Year’s parties through the years” like you might expect. If I’m tuning into the Times Square business (and I’m not, but if I was), I’d sort of like to see bits of stuff from the 1978 show with the Village People or something. It’s a holiday about the passage of time, and the TV version seemed to treat every year by itself.

Dick Clark was a sort of time capsule, and they didn’t open it. American Bandstand through the years, yeah, but not New Year’s?

I happen to like the idea

of the best players in the world in a game together. Same goes for the best young players (the Rising Stars version). Admittedly I’m less than thrilled if it turns into a three point bomb fest, like the RS game, but still, it IS great pick-up ball. Hmmm… if teams really need a reason for effort, maybe they should put something on the game(s). Money for charity say, with both sides getting cash, but more for the winners. That might work, most players represent some individual charity or cause already, reward the winners with donations. You’d have to specify time allotments for players, as in X amount of time for starters vs bench, (otherwise LeBron might never get off the court) but it would give some reason for extra effort.

Keep in mind, they’re supposed to be putting on a show. RA would have a heart attack if Ricky was tossing behind the back lead passes in the regular season, but wasn’t it cool to see in that game? If there is a way to navigate the thin line between showmanship and actually trying to win… or maybe we should all just stop worrying about it and just try to enjoy really good players having fun playing together.
