Pek's shot chart
None of us are perfect as I reminded myself earlier today when I overanalyzed Brad Miller's stat line and fabulized a brain teaser post out of it. Tonight, however, I saw near perfection at its most rock solid. CHers, I give you Pek's shot charts from tonight's game.
Pek's shot chart from the second quarter:

Pek is our Dragon Master, our tower of zen.
If he can't do it, no one can.
Gotta love this team.

Everything at the rim
He’s a beast. Gets deep position, nobody can move him, and he actually makes layups. Plus the offensive glass.
He ought to be sending fish wrapped in newspaper to opposing bigs.
I've changed my sig. The Wolves are now like a reasonably decent meal.

He's even starting to box out a bit too
I didn’t watch the whole game, but when I did I noticed some good position underneath on defense for rebounds.

We run a lot of two point guard line ups and have an extremely good pass first PG.
I think Pekovic’s B\gig man check list looks pretty good.
1) Set good screens (still working on limiting the illegals, but otherwise check)
2) Get good position and seal off your man for the entry pass (check)
3) Finish (check)
4) Hit you free throws (check)
5) Rebound (offensively check defensively not quite there yet)
6) Defend (work in progress, but not terrible)

Can anyone remember the last time he's attempted a real jump shot?
I swear the longest shot I’ve ever seen him take has been a free throw.

Just in warm ups.
And he smiles when he shoots a jump shot every time like he’s shooting from 3/4 court.
He sticks with what he’s good at, and he’s real good at it. Very happy to see him playing like this! Now just get Wes off the damn court and we got a team!!
I watch this team, and i care so much, simply because i can’t not. It’s just a part of who i am..
Another thing the (very good) announcers noted tonight...
…is how great Pek’s footwork is… Yes, I agreed with them that he did travel that one time before the refs bailed him out with a foul, but by and large his post foot work is excellent – particularly highlighted by that 720 he pulled the other day. Pek has been getting a lot of love lately, and deservedly (especially for how critical (and cynical :P) we are in general), but I think this facet should be brought to fore.
The Pek spin dance
should be preserved for future generations, like Barishnikov’s ballet moves….
Ricky is lobbing at an Ooptimal level!
and the best part is that his jumper isn't that bad
he just doesn’t listen to that voice on his shoulder…perhaps he killed it and that’s why he smiles.

Someone mentioned it in another thread
But Pek seems to have acquired the KLove technique of rebounding with one arm way up to make up for a lack of pure leaping ability. With his ability to hold position, it seems effective.
He did a great job tonight as he has for a while now. Soft hands catching the ball, nice tough, establishes about the lowest position on average I’ve seen since Shaq.
Needs to get his hands up on D. Sometimes just stands there. But seems to try to move on D and be in the right spot.
I believe Adelman played him all but about 30 seconds in the 2nd half. After his sporadic minutes this year, he must have been wiped out.
Wouldn’t this be a marvelous development if the C we needed was already on the roster.
Two Pek-related questions:
1) Are we still in small sample size / normal ups & downs territory here?
2) What is the primary reason Pek has stopped with the incessant fouling and 3-second calls. Did he figure it out on his own or receive better coaching?

typo - nice *touch*
Also has a knack for being the right spot to receive Ricky’s “amazing – there is no where for him to go” interior passes.
The Nets broadcasters were very complimetary. Said Barea might as well drive and just throw it up off the backboard, given the way Love and Pek were owning the paint. Both bigs are good at O-rebounding and putting the ball immediately in for a layup.

I get the feeling
that with Pek playing so well, other teams are going to start planning to thwart him. His numbers could dip from that. In that case, we’ll really see what he’s made of. He’s not going to face the Nets’ lack of a frontcourt every game, but I have high hopes that he’s figured this out.

They did planned for him in Europe
he managed to overwhelm that. Usualy teams played zone and packed the paint with 3 players. He showed that he could kick the ball out to open shooter. But yeh, the time will tell…
In this situation could be Welington or Ridnour :-)
Does Ridnour ever shoot after play off the ball?
Don't have the exact numbers
But per Hollingers euro translator numbers Pek was expected to be a 16-17 ppg guy with 7-8 boards in 36 minutes. That’s my memory anyways. He’s basically doing exactly what he did at the highest level in Europe. Remember that he would’ve been a lotto pick had he not been locked into that contract. SnP points out that he was a Mac pick, which is true, but Pek going first in the second round was pretty much like Derrick Williams going second overall, or taking Rubio at five – if those guys are there, you take them. Any team would’ve have. I guess what I’m really trying to say is that taking Pek wasn’t a Manu or even a Craig Smith moment. Dude has produced everywhere except at the NBA level, and now he’s doing exactly what he did before.

Better coaching is a absolutely the reason for some of his improvement.
But I always said that with some real playing time he’d get a better feel for how to not foul. He’s learning to use his strength in a less obviously overpowering way. And his touch around the rim is seriously good. It’s even more amazing now just how bad Darko is around the rim….
I watch this team, and i care so much, simply because i can’t not. It’s just a part of who i am..
It's funny.
When Darko puts up a layup or a hook I’m thinking, “Just dunk it, Darko!” When Pek puts one up, I think, “That’s going in.”

Me too - with a slight twist
When Darko puts up anything except a Dunk, I’m thinking “NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! Turnover!”
When Pek puts one up, I think, "That’s going in."

Pek showed his EHonda hand wave again yesterday
I don’t know why but when he really starts waving them on defense I can’t help but chuckle.
I think we're past the sample size stage simply because Pek is playing how many of us were expecting him to play once he was adjusted to the NBA
If I'm pissing you off its probably sarcasm
I was expecting good post scoring with a good FG%
But poor rebounding. If he can sustain this rebounding level, he is underpaid.

I really think that we're at a point
where this team has enough coaching and player talent to mentor the rest of the team into being better players. Adelman’s determination to turn Wes into an NBA starter is almost starting to inspire me.
The everyone trying to be Ricky and then turning over the ball fancy passing gets old, but then you see Pek rebound like Love or Ridnour pass like average Rubio you wonder if maybe the team isn’t getting a lot better fast. Love’s RBs are dropping even as team rebounding is going up and I think that’s a good thing. I like these pieces and how they’re coming together.
Yo ho ho and a FirstRow stream!
"average Rubio"
but Luke gets in trouble when he gets too fancy and goes Rubio deluxe

Rubin passing is contagious
I found myself trying in pickup. It was ugly
I'm not even shocked by the rebounding total,
but the offensive rebounding is crazy. Tonight he had 7 o-boards and 4 d-boards. Who does that? And he does it every night!

I am shocked :-)
i expected around 6 rebounds and about 13 – 15 points. In Europe he did have 30+ games but rarely 10+ rebounds.
Ya
Pek’s Oreb % is almost double his Dreb. When has that ever happened?
by Dr. Wolfenstein on Feb 4, 2012 1:45 PM CST via mobile up reply actions
you try rebounding around that mountain

by TheEvilProfessor on Feb 6, 2012 8:57 AM CST up reply actions
It's got to be because of his strength/position
Unless he is setting a screen he is always near the rim and this leads to him having good position for an O rebound because his man is under or behind the rim. I have yet to see some who can do anything about the position Pek gets so unless that changes I think he can keep up the good O rebounding.
Hey SnP - Maybe you got your wish in a different way?
One reason you were fired up about the manther was the interesting combination of three unique players who had very unusual, effective, and “specialist” kind of games.
Maybe instead of an amazingly atheletic, shot-blocking, defensive manther, we instead have an amazingly strong, shot-making, offensive rebounding man-mountain. Love + Pek == lots of offensive rebounds + putbacks == good basketball.

Barkley and Moses Malone on the 76ers
Love statwise has compared well to Barkley – with his 3 point shooting he’s surpassed him to be honest.
He can do that
because he has excellent free throws. There’s no way to stop him scoring under the basket.

This is great
But how did I miss six halfcourt heaves??
I only ever want the Wolves to draft 5th.

The lower right hand x and o are, of course, the key, and not Pek shots.

Pek has more moves then he has Shown here
His unstoppable move in europe was a Shake and Bake like Spin to a Baseline hook.
Yeah, but we all have PDSD
(Post Darko Stress Disorder) and hook shots traumatize us.

Pek is a very reliable passer too
which is awesome
I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.
I'd argue better than Jefferson
if that is the comp we are going with
I’m still annoyed we traded Jefferson for nothing, but Pek looks to maybe be able to give us what Jeff did but more efficiently
I don't know what an art house is, I don't know what goes on in an art house, I have never been in an art house, and I can't imagine it's any place I ever want to be.
those are lies
I refuse to believe Al Jefferson can pass until I actually see it in a game situation without waiting for a triple team for him to kickout a poor pass attempt to a wide open shooter that would never be able to corral that pass and get a shot off.
