When Kevin Love got suspended for stepping on Luis Scola's face and then came back to score 30+ points in his next four out of five games, an idea started to form in my mind. Does Love need more rest to be effective? Is he getting too many minutes, past the point of diminishing returns? I understand that he's our best player and that he needs to play significant minutes, by why does it have to be 39:30 per game (as of 2/28). I think that Love could be significantly more effective playing 34-35 minutes per game.
I would love to see an extra 4-5 minutes a night go to Derrick Williams. Anthony Randolph has been productive in limited minutes, why not give him more? When Pek needs rest, bring in AR instead of sliding Love to the 5. I think Addelman's rotations have been a little too short lately. Jump shooters need their legs to be fresh, otherwise they will have slumps like Love did prior to his suspension.
The same thing could be said about Ricky Rubio. There have been stretches this season he has looked positively haggard. With competent backups like Ridnour and Barrea, why wear out one of your best players, especially when he has never played a schedule this intense? From January 10 to February 7, Rubio never played less than 32 minutes a night, and most games he played 36+.
It's my prediction that Love will return from his minor rib injury to post a handful of great games, then get worn down again by the demanding schedule and too much playing time.
I think Love should play 34-35 minutes a night and Rubio should be asked to play somewhere around 32, otherwise they both start to lose their effectiveness. What say you?
