With all the negatives in our face as the Wolves finish the season, it bears highlighting the four big improvements the Wolves showed this year, three of them largely unexpected, wonderful surprises.
1. A first rate coach in Adelman (the non-surprise, given his past track record of success).
2. Kevin Love deserving a second most-improved player of the year award. Granted, he won't actually win it, but has there ever been a player who went from bench player to All-Star one year, and then All-Star to MVP candidate the next?
3. Nikola Pekovic (spellchecker just tried to change that to Pelvic, btw) going from a complete bust and afterthought to one of the five best centers in the league. WTF?
4. Ricky Rubio coming out of the gate as a top PG, top five passer AND defender at his position. I thought he would be a good defender eventually based on scouting reports, but his rookie year?
Granted, David Kahn had nothing to do with any of these aside from hiring Adelman, and our swingmen are more dogs than Wolves (as players, not people).
But the Wolves now have an MVP caliber star and young all-star candidates at the two toughest positions to fill. And we had more fun wins and good basketball than any year since 2004. So this was a fine year to be a Wolves fan, Kahn or no Kahn - we had more good luck than bad that will carry forward.
