He was courted by David Kahn during free agency, and although his numbers have certainly been decent since re-signing with Memphis, he's not producing in line with what he's paid. But if the Wolves can peddle depth (and salary) for Gay (and his salary), it might be a trade that helps both teams.
Heisley says they can't go into the luxury tax, but they have to consider a qualifying offer (maybe) to Mayo, then Tony Allen the year after that. Since the team already has almost $60 million committed to just four players for the 13/14 season, and Allen's got to be worth at least 5-6 mm/year, and Mayo will want even more, that's luxury territory right there. A lot to pay for a team that was just tossed from the playoffs by the 4th (at best) best team in the West.
ZBo can't be traded, Gasol won't be traded, which leaves Rudy Gay. Which leaves the question "Is Rudy Gay worth 17mm a year," (probably not), and "Would the Wolves pay that to him?" (doubtful).
But still--would you want the Wolves to trade for Rudy Gay, as long as it wasn't Pek, Ricky, Love, or DerWill?
