These are a few quotes that I have translated from "La Marca" a Spanish sports newspaper regarding Rudy Fernandez
, Ricky Rubio
, Sergie Ibaka and Arvydus Sabonis (because he is one of my all-time favorites).
It isn't all directly Timberwolves
related but I thought I would post it since for two years there has been talk at Canis Hoopus to bring Rudy to Minnesota. Therefore I thought this may interest a few people as well as the Ricky and Ibaka inteviews.
Rudy will continue being a Nuggets player until July, 1st. In this moment he will be able to decide his future, which seems closer to Europa, and concretely to Real Madrid than the NBA. "Everybody is talking about why I could do. Right now I’m thinking about the selection (the Spanish National Team) and in preparing myself as much as possible. The luck that I have is that I can elect to return to Madrid or continue in the United States. I have a contract with Denver but it would nto be a step backwards si I would play in Europe", affirms Rudy.
He goes on to talk about how the Spanish team would like to win at the Olympics and that the U.S. are the favorites but that Brazil and United Kingdom as also very good teams. He then talks a little bit about his injury.
"He estado entrenando, he pisado ya la pista y me siento bien…"
In regards to his injury, Rudy wanted to calm everybody and assured that his recovery is going correctly. "I have been straining, I have already stepped on the floor and I feel good…."
To be honest I Have always liked the idea of bringing in another Spaniard, especially one with a good relationship with Rubio, maybe Gasol will be a possibility. None the less the article suggests to be he’s a lot closer to going back to Madrid since it only talks a little bit about his experience with George Karl
and the only team in really mentions as a possibility is Madrid. Who knows maybe it will happen, but if he’s healthy and if he’s signable in the sense of his contract I think he would make sense at the wing. To read it all go here
Here are a couple of Questions and Answers from Ricky Rubio there is nothing completely new here about his knee, but he said a couple of interesting things about the Wolves. I will admit my translation on the first question is not very good for a couple of reasons, but I think you’ll get the idea.
Answer: No, ni mucho menos.
Question: The Wolves were fighting for the playoffs, but they imploded after your injury. Knowing you it’s certain that you would have preferred that everything would have been better, although I imagine an intimate satisfaction.
Ricky: NO, nor anything like it. I don’t think that my injury influenced this. If it was a problem for the plan that they had it’s because I had a lot of minutes. But the team did have a physical and mental down. Pekovich was playing hurt and he was operated on. Kevin Love couldn’t play in the last games. The same happened to Ridnour. Everything happened at once. It is possible that the decline started with my injury, but afer there was a general mental and physical decline. The season was hard and you can note that on a young team that was morally affected by injuries.
Question: The big worry of all of this journey (referring to his recovery) is knowing if you will return to be what you were?
Answer: Sure, there are doubts knowing how I will return. I think physically I will be able to return to the level that I was or that the NBA requires. There are worries and doubts, but I forget them when I rehabilitate o when I return to training. Then they go away and I think I can be the same or even better.
It’s always good to see that Ricky is positive although when isn’t he? It is interesting that says that his injury wasn’t the cause of the team’s decline. I think he’s just being modest, but isn’t that the perfect attitude for a point guard? If you want to see it all here it is:
I believe I have done a good job. Seeing from where I come from and where I’m at, I think that I can be happy and proud of my progress, but I know that I can improve if I continue working hard
Regarding Sabonis there is just a video of him playing basketball and I assume speaking in Lithuania in Caracas, Venezuela as they prepare for the Olympics the headline says:
Translation: Arvydas Sabonis returns to the court in order to help "his cubs"
Sabonis is one of my all-time favorite players. I know he was a member of the Trailblazers during the "jailblazers" era, but he was a class act and a real enigma in my opinion. He is one of those players that you ask "what if?" regarding their career like with Mark Prior or Bo Jackson. In this case Sabonis played in the NBA after a severe injury.
