Moving on with D-Will

How good can Derrick Williams be? Well, we might soon find out. Without Batum, we still have a need for wing minutes, and I'm now hoping that Derrick Williams gets and opportunity to snag a fair amount of those. It should be noted that I'm not the biggest fan of his. One of the reasons that he was such a good player at the collegiate level was because of an unsustainable three point efficiency. Still, he did show flashes last year, and if he comes back to camp and is leaner and in better shape, there's no reason to think that he doesn't have a solid chance to improve his game this year.

Does that make him a three? No, but he doesn't have to be a full time three to help the team. If he could swing between the three and four as a backup he could get major minutes and if his play improves he could be a real asset. With Rubio, Ridnour and Barea at the point, and Roy and Shved at the two, Wiiliams could split time with Budinger at the three and Love at the four. Say 20 minutes a game at the SF position and 15 minutes as the PF. If he could raise his 3pt% to a respectable rate and shoot FTs a little better, he would be a solid player. If he could improve dramatically he could be a key cog.

I'm in no way certain that it will happen, but given our other options I think it's not a bad idea to see what we have in Williams. That doesn't mean that we should look intro adding a Brewer or Lee, or even trading for Cunningham. However, at this point Williams might be a better option that those players.
