Tomorrow night (or tonight for most of you when you read this) the Wolves play the Pacers. The Pacers are widely considered to be one of the best teams in the league. Let's find out why; TO THE STAT MACHINE! (CJ, that semicolon is for you!)
Before we really dig into offense and defense let's talk about some major stats they excel in.
Wins: They lead our league with 12
+/- They are 2nd in our league at +9.5
Blocks: They lead our league with 8.5
FT%: They are 5th in our league at 78.5
Let's break down their defense by zones
Restricted area: The Pacers lead our league in protected that little semi circle on the floor. Teams shoot 49.1% against the Pacers in the restricted area. For those of you eye test guys that means THAT TEAMS DON'T EVEN MAKE HALF OF THEIR LAYUPS OR DUNKS AGAINST THE PACERS!!!
Paint (non restricted): Pacers are in the top third of the league here (we are actually better at protecting this part of the floor)
Midrange: Teams shoot under 36% against the Pacers here (good for 4th in our league). They force the 3rd most shots from this place in our league (we are actually 2nd! we hold teams to under 40% -that's middle of the pack). This means that they make teams take a lot of long twos and make them miss them!
Corner 3s: Teams have only attempted 49 corner 3s against the Pacers (good for 2nd in our league). Teams only shoot 32.7% when they do get the best shot in basketball (good for 3rd in our league).
Above break: Teams have attempted 178 threes (9th in our league) at 36% (11th in our league). This will probably be the wolves are going to have to make their shots. (Announcer voice) Kevin to the left wing. Kevin to the left wing.
Basically as much as the Rockets are the dream offense, the Pacers are the dream defense. They are great because they are big, long, tough, and not afraid to rough up the competition. This all adds up to a league leading Def rating of 91.2.
Offensively they are pretty average. They are number 14 in our league in DefRtg at 101.8. They are in the bottom third in Assists to Turnover ratio at only 1.24. They are 11th in TS%. This isn't how they beat teams, but they don't lose because of their offense.
Here some stats by player.
Some observations. They lean on Paul George a lot for scoring. He's at 24.2 per game! The next guy is at 13.4 (Lance (not the backstreet boy) Stevenson). They don't get a lot of assists as a team, and only have one player (Lance (not the backstreet boy) Stevenson) with more than 5 a game.
Let's break down the match-ups! The Pacers don't really have a PG so for the purpose of this break down George Hill will be the PG.
Ricky vs George Hill: George Hill is a tough blue color player playing in his home town. Rubio is a flashy Spanish sensation. George Hill plays defense and Ricky changes faces, rescues kittens, and single handedly warms Minneapolis during the winter. Winner Rubio.
KMart vs Lance (not the backstreet boy) Stevenson: Lance Stevenson is from Brooklyn by way of Cincinnati. Cincinnati is known for losing fights to short guys like Tu Holiday (this bodes well for JJ). Kevin Martin on the other hand went to the Stanford of the East in Western Carolina University. He gets buckets and he is the obvious winner of this match-up.
Grover vs Paul George: The only thing Paul George has going for him is half of the Beetles in his name. His parents for some reason left out Ringo. Grover is not only a leakout artist, but also starts SF for the Seseme Street Muppets (Elmo is PG, Oscar is SG, Snuffleupagus is PF, and Big Bird is the C). Winner Grover.
KLove vs David West: David West is a name away from being batman and one of the best Family Guy characters. Sadly his name is David. KLove is the best PF in the word and has added all sorts of things to his game. He even has a chat line for ladies in want. Winner KLove.
The Balkan Bulldozer vs Roy Hibbert: Roy HIbbert went to college at Georgetown. All that taught him how to do was take 17 threes. Good work Roy! Pek didn't go to college because in Montenegro, universities are for learning. Pek's been a bada** since conception. He didn't need to go to college. He also doesn't hang around the arc, he goes to the little semi circle and punishes. Winner Pek.
It will probably come down to the Pacers D against the Wolves O. If the wolves can get out and run (getting open shots in the process) they will have a chance.
Mrs. Scissors and Soph are out of town and I haven't really found anyone to go to the game with. Let me know if you are interested.
