If Minnesota had a Mount Rushmore, it would be four giants busts of Ricky Rubio smiling down upon the 10,000 lakes and... wait, that's not right.
If MN had a musical Mount Rushmore, instead of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and TR, it would be Dylan, Prince, the Replacements and Husker Du (add you own umlauts, please). Am I right or am I right?
In any event, two of those four have produced new recordings that take us back to their commercial and critical heyday in the 1980's. I've always found it silly to vote for "which song is better," but that doesn't mean I'm against such meaningless polls. So let's have at it in the short time between the Wolves' dismantling of the Pistons and their sure-to-be-satisfying victory over the Lakers.
First up, from an EP released to raise money for their former guitarist Slim Dunlap, who is recovering from a stroke, the Replacements cover Gordon Lightfoot:
Also out with a new song is Prince Rogers Nelson. While he's put out a fairly steady stream of original music over the years, this one REALLY sounds like it could have been a b-side hit back in the Purple Rain era. The catchy pop simplicity, the guitar, and the barely-even-an-entendre subject matter - why it's a kissing cousin of "I'll Jack U Off."
Vote if you feel like it... and tell me if there's someone who should be knocked off my MN Rushmore and who would be their replacements (pun intended).
