It has been a long time since I have been on CH but I thought that I would try to contribute something during our off-season. I recently saw Love and Basketball for the first time in 10 years. One of my platoon members had it installed on his laptop and he asked me to give him my take on the film since I'm "such a damn film critic". I thought my fellow CHers would might be interested in this film or give me some feedback after having seen it. I apologize for the many grammatical errors and drifting thoughts. I've been struggling with PTSD for awhile and sometimes my mind tends to wander. However, I am making excellent progress and I am very happy to be a contributing member of CH.
I was surprised at this film's direction. I was expecting more of a chick-flick and less of a sports movie. There is much more "sports" in this movie than the typical love story film. We see the main characters in three separate timelines; 11 years old, high school and college/adulthood. Their relationship is very much a typical giver-taker relationship but at the end of L&B will the taker turn back and give? Will love conquer all? This story is full of heart and more of a girl-meets-boy story than vice versa. For those looking for gender-equality, this is a good movie. For the females wanting an engrossing love story, this is a good movie. For those of us that like a story about heartache, sacrifice and redemption - this is a good movie.
I didn't want to give away any important parts of the storyline in my review so I will say this: if you CHers love basketball, see this film. If you have a special woman/man in your life, watch this movie with them. L&B plays triangle offense with the two leads and basketball. Unlike the triangle offense, this film is stimulating and is a success. This is the kind of movie that makes you put your arm around your love and pull them closer, isn't that what a romance film is supposed to do?
