Christian music gets a bad rap a lot of the time (and let's not even talk about Christian rap). Much of it is deserved. Many of the best Christian artists escape the Christian music "ghetto", and make really good music, occasionally with "Christian" or "spiritual" lyrics that are enjoyed by diverse audiences. This post is not about those bands. Artists like Bob Dylan, The Call, King's X, U2, Over The Rhine, Bruce Cockburn, T Bone Burnett, and many, many others have written really good, spiritual songs without being shuttled to "that corner" of the music store. I also made a subjective decision to exclude traditional gospel music. There are others, though, who fall between the cracks, making musically and lyrically interesting songs that very few people ever hear because they are kept on Christian labels, without being deemed acceptable for Christian radio. This post is dedicated to those artists. Hopefully some of you will enjoy some of these.
Acid trip talking blues from a San Franciscan hippie.
Early 90's Los Angeles alt rock.
The 77's are known more for blues-y pop, but this song is so beautiful, I had to share it.
How about a Gospel cover with MOAR guitar solos?
This guy was one of the best lyricists I've ever listened to.
Kind of an acquired taste, but worth a listen, I think.
Interesting fusion of Gospel and 80's Synth Rock.
It's always tricky to take a song out of the middle of an atmospheric concept album.
More 70's hippie Jesus people music! Just because.
Last, but certainly not least, the title track off one of my favorite albums, Christian or otherwise. (Another concept album, but what the hell.)Obviously, there are a lot of things I left out. Please leave any additions, questions, elaborations, etc in the comments.
