The more I look at the current roster and the moves I would like to see go down this off season the more clear it is that we need to jettison a few players/contracts from the team. There are some very nice free agent players available at SG such as Korver, Reddick etc... and of course we need to have enough dough to be able to re-sign Pek. I think we all know the players I'm talking about:
1.) Derrick Williams is going to literally be $7 million plus completely and totally wasted for this team next year. He simply has NO role on this team with a healthy roster. He'll be lucky to see 5 minutes a game and probably doesn't deserve even that much. Derrick is a definite Must Get Rid Of Player this off season in my opinion. As long as we don't have to send out a future 1st ala Wes Johnson to get rid of this guy I'll be happy give him away with no compensation other than to be rid of his salary.
2.) Luke Ridnour would be fine as a back up PG for 15 minutes a game but it seems Shved would easily slip into Ridnour's role on this team, doing a better job on the defensive end against PGs and especially SGs. We all endured some absolutely brutal defense by Luke last year. All the opposing team had to do was go right at him on offense each and every game and we had little hope of stopping them. It was not through a lack of effort as he was physically overmatched on a continual basis, but that didn't make me feel any better. Granted, he was thrust into some pretty shitty situations due to the team breaking down completely, but no matter how you look at it the guy should not be relied upon for anything more than spot duties. At $4 million a year Luke is way too expensive for what he provides this team.
3.) JJ Barrea I love JJ and his game but at $5 million a year he is far too expensive for his role as offensive spark plug on the current T-Wolve's team. I personally wouldn't mind keeping him but he really is a luxury a team like ours can't afford.
For me it's really kind of a hoot to try and play with the Trade Machine to see where we may go in actual trades to make the team better. The problem with the Trade Machine is that it's very inflexible with salaries balancing out and if that's really and truly how actual trades work then how in the world could we possibly rid ourselves of these guys? Are there ANY teams out there that it's even possible to ship them off to without having to take any salary back? For all the talk about trading these guys away, is accomplishing the team's goal of freeing up salary cap money to sign a free agent SG and re-signing Pek even a remote possibility?
I would love to hear some realistic scenarios where we free up money for what this team needs in the off season.
