Timberwolves Power Rankings Update: Week 10

Howard Smith-USA TODAY Sports

As the Timberwolves' fascination with a .500 record continues, a new batch of rankings have been posted.

Eric put it best in his reaction to last night's victory at Philadelphia.

"Blowout. Close loss. Blowout. Close loss. Blowout. Close loss. Blowout. Close loss. Blowout. Close loss. Blowout. Close loss. Blowout. Close loss. Blowout. Close loss. Blowout. Close loss. Blowout. Close loss. Blowout. Close loss. Blowout. Close loss. Blowout. Close loss. Blowout. Close loss. Blowout. Close loss. Blowout. Close loss. Blowout."

That trend continued a few nights ago at home versus the Thunder, and again last night against the Sixers. Wednesday's game will be another chance for the Wolves to get out of the .500-and-below ceiling that they have can't seem to escape from.

Note: These ranks came before last night's victory. Whether it would have made a difference is up for debate.

Thoughts?

Average Ranking: 12.25 (Last week: 11.375)

No. 12 (Last Week: 10): Jason Patt, SB Nation

The Wolves continue to falter in close games, moving to 0-9 on the season in games decided by four points or less after a heartbreaking loss to the Thunder at home. In this latest choke, Kevin Love missed four late free throws, including all three when he had the chance to put Minnesota up late.

No. 12 (Last Week: 10): Marc Stein, ESPN

So why hasn't that gaudy average point differential we're always going on about -- No. 8 in the league at plus-4.0 -- led to a better overall record for K-Love and Co.? The Wolves are 0-8 when they don't score 100 points ... and 0-8 in games decided by four points or less. That'll pretty much do it.

No. 12 (Last Week: 12): Marc Spears, Yahoo! Sports

Rookie swingman Shabazz Muhammad was sent to the D-League Iowa Energy with the arrival of the D-League Showcase in Reno.

No. 13 (Last Week: 11): Matt Moore, CBS Sports

It doesn't matter how far down in the toy box that loss is, the Wolves will dig it out like a toddler hopped up on Pixie Sticks.

No. 13 (Last Week: 12): USA Today Writers' Poll

Nikola Pekovic's numbers increase with the length of his beard.

No. 12 (Last Week: 11): Matt Dollinger, Sports Illustrated

The Wolves' offense is coming to life in the dead of winter in Minnesota. Kevin Love and Co. are averaging 114.3 points on 48.4 percent shooting over their last six games after shooting just 40.9 percent in the previous 15. Minnesota has moved into the top 10 in points scored per possession.

No. 12 (Last Week: 13): David Aldridge, NBA.com

I think the Wolves' radio play by play guy thought a foul should have been called on Shawn Marion at the end of the Dallas-Minnesota game last week.

No. 13 (Last Week: 12): John Schuhmann, NBA.com

Whether it's because Ed Malloy is swallowing his whistle, because Kevin Love is missing free throws, because their bench can't score, or because their defense has been terrible, the Wolves are 0-7 in chances to get back over .500 since dropping below on Nov. 25. And for the next six games, their opponents alternate between below-.500 teams and .500 or better teams, against whom they're 4-11.
