Hello everyone, I hope this playoff game seven holiday weekend finds you in good spirit and cheer. I felt it was time to interrupt, or at least accompany, this amazing basketball with a little music. In fact, these playoffs have been exceptional and it seems a good opportunity to remind ourselves that, despite the absence of our beloved Timberwolves in these games, we still have not only the best basketball community on the internet but also the best music community. Our ongoing discussion about basketball metric based analysis is incredibly informative but I have also learned quite bit about music during my time here, and the purpose of this post is to look at some of the fine music that I personally have been introduced to through my association with the Canis Hoopus music community. So, without further adieu, let's take a look at some of the songs you folks have introduced me to over the past few years.
I think I will start this out with the first lady of TimberWolves basketball, Cat Power. Somehow I had remained sorely and painfully ignorant of this particular artist until I started to hear about her through our Hoopus music discussions. Anyway, this is one of my favorite songs off the album that I was directed to start with. Great advice E-6. It's been a regular in my rotation since I downloaded it.
Wow, that was undoubtedly great. Next I will turn towards a Deftones cover of a Duran Duran song that was a middle school favorite of mine. Thanks Hoopus Music for directing me towards this version. The whole album is fantastic but I think this is the standout.
That was pretty sweet don't you think? Anyway, I have found Canis to be a pretty inclusive and progressive community despite out struggle to draw more women into our ranks. Regardless, we do seem to appreciate our female singers. I think I have Dogpile to thank for this one:
Next I will look at yet another E-6 addition to my musical library. Is that guy a musical encyclopedia or what? And as an artist I suspect he doesn't have a Badfingfer on either of his hands.
Next I turn to an unlikely source for one of my absolute favorite songs of those I have found via my association with Canis Hoopus. This one came to me on a side bar conversation with our fearless leader Eric in Madison. Not known as a regular contributor in the Hoopus music threads, Eric has proven time and time again to be an astute musicologist as well as a strong advocate for our little non-basektball obsession. Thanks Eric. This song has earned a prominent spot on my ipod.
Last I will play a song that I had not heard before from an artist that I did in fact enjoy prior to my association with the good people of Canis Hoopus. This particular version of this song, as incredible as it is, cannot be found outside of the youtube format. This may, however, be a good thing due to the strong emotional reaction I have to this. I suspect many of you will know exactly what I am talking about. It's a great song that I'm certain has many a meaning to a good number of people all around the world, but to me, this artist, and this song in particular, will always scream Canis Hoopus. Thanks Stop n Pop for everything you did to create this space, this ones for you.
Wow. That takes me right back to a very specific place and time and makes me want to say thanks to each and every one of you for the very real ways in which you contribute to my life. Be well my friends.
I'm also sure I forgot a good many songs that you have introduced me to over the past few years. Oh well, truth is I'm not as young as I once was and it's your turn anyway. What songs have you discovered through the Canis Hoppus Music club? I look forward to hearing from you in the comments.
