Past Draft Mistakes

In light of our most recent draft results, I would like to look back at some of our more overlooked mistakes from the last few years. I am not talking about going back to the Marbury/Allen blunder or the Roy/foye debacle (yes I would rather have had a few all star years from Roy then multiple below average years from Foye). I am also not looking to play Monday Morning Quarterback and look at players that were available to us but that we didn't draft (see kawih Leonard). I want to look at a number of players who we at one point actually owned the rights to but that we traded away for cash or other inferior assets. I believe that some of these mistakes alone would make the difference from where we are today and a team that consistently competes in the playoffs. Without further ado, here are some considerations:

  • Nick Calathes - traded to the mavericks for a second round pick and cash. Didn't come over until last year but had a very impressive year as a backup (5 pts, 3 assists, 2 rebounds on 46% shooting 31% from 3 in 16 minutes). Has great length at 6 foot 6 inches and would be an ideal backup behind Rubio (much better than Shved or Barea).
  • Ty Lawson - makes me too mad to even discuss but you all know the story
  • The entire 2011 draft - I am not even sure where to begin on this one because I think this one infuriates me the most in light of recent trade talks. Let's break this down in order:
    • Drafted Donatas monteijunas - traded along with Johnny Flynn to the rockets for brad miller and the rights to chandler parsons and nikola mirotic. Promising big man averaging 6 pts and 4 boards a game.
    • Traded nikola mirotic to the bulls for Norris cole and Malcolm lee.
    • Traded cole to he heat for bojan bogdanovich a future second round pick (which I believe was later sold for cash) and cash
    • Traded bojan bogdanovich to New Jersey for a future second round pick (not sure what became of this pick but likely sold for cash) and cash
    • Traded chandler parsons back to Houston for cash
  • That is a head spinning number of trades so let's try to simplify what we could have had in order of preference:
    • Chandler parsons and nikola mirotic - I don't know of mirotic is any good but from all accounts he is one of the most exciting Europeans that could make the jump to the nba in a while. Parsons has been a revelation for Houston averaging 16 points 5 boards and 4 assists per game while shooting 47 % from the field and 37%from 3. What really gets me angry is the fact that both of these players have been linked as potential center pieces in trades for Kevin love. Could you imagine if both of these players would have been playing on the same team?
    • Chandler parsons and Norris cole - cole has been a fine backup point guard on a team loaded with talent. Still at least on par or better than options on our current roster
    • Donatas monteijunas - would be a solid backup pf that could potentially step in as a starter when Love leaves
  • Of all of these possibilities we ended up with Malcolm Lee, cash, and future second round picks (some sold for cash and others which I am too lazy to look up). Could you imagine if we had an owner who was more interested in creating a winning team than raising money for the coaches buyout?
  • Finally trey Burke - was arguably one of the best players from a particularly week draft class averaging 13 pts and 6 assists albeit on pretty inefficient shooting. I am not ready to give up on Shabazz but I would like to believe that Burke would have been a better option as a backup pg and potential trade bait later on.
In light of these blunders it is no wonder that we still have not made the playoffs since Garnett donned a twolves uniform. I hope that my feelings about Lavine are wrong but based on this history, I am not terribly optimistic. Also congratulations to markel brown and Alessandro gentile, being drafted by the wolves and then traded for cash is the biggest endorsement that you can receive that you will be a productive future nba player.
