Food & Wine Mag features Mankato hot dish

The January issue of Food & Wine has a feature on hot dish, with some updated recipes which deserve no comment from me. The interesting bit was that hot dish was acknowledged to be midwestern, and in particular, Minnesota seems to be the epicenter. Worth a look for all the cooks in the audience.

Here's a couple of samples:

"1930. The first recorded hot dish recipe appears in the Grace Lutheran Ladies Aid Cookbook from Mankato, MN. The recipe calls for 2lb hamburger, Creamette brand elbow macaroni, and canned peas." Note that Food & Wine mag feels a need to point out parenthetically that hamburger is ground beef. I thought everyone knew that...

"2015. Minnesota lawmakers go head to head in a Hotdish Off in DC. Rep. Betty McCollum wins for her turkey-and-sweet-potato recipe. Senator Al Franken is runner up with Turkey Chow-Minn."

Hey, we've hit the big time. Maybe we can get Food & Wine to publish some Mn Basketball recipes!
