Initial thoughts

This one is going to take a while to digest.

First of all, let's state the obvious: this was Kahn's best draft.  He made the correct pick at #2 and he turned #20 into a series of cash trades, 2nd round picks, Malcolm Lee and cash (presumably for Rambis' buyout).  He may be a weasel, he may have absolutely FUBAR'd his first 2 years in the league and I'm not sure he really knows the first thing about pro ball, but he does appear to be able to recognize trade value and act upon this recognition.  This has to be worth something and it will be a shame if he takes a hit for maximizing value while picking up some additional picks and cash.

The bottom line for this off-season is this: Rubio and Derrick Williams are being added to the team.  As much as Rambis is being needlessly and classlessly jerked around, if Rubio and Williams turn out to be good players, nobody will give a damn in 2 years.  Kahn did not overthink his most valuable asset and he over-thought his weakest one--turning it into additional picks, cash and a serviceable 2 guard (Malcolm Lee).

The catch here is that anything could change before the first tip off of the 2011/12 season.  Any one of the players on the roster not named Ricky Rubio could be moved.  Do I like the thought of them trotting out Rubio, Wes Johnson, Michael Beasley, Derrick Williams and Kevin Love?  Yeah, I kind of do.  I'm up for anything exciting at this point.  I've completely bought into the notion that this squad is a bunch of glorious weirdos being run by a bunch of pirates. That's the only way I can square the circle.

Anywho, we'll have more on the draft over the weekend.  In the meantime, enjoy the fact that the Wolves finally picked the guy they needed to pick while using a mid round pick to create more value....oh, they also have Ricky f'ing Rubio.  The lockout starts in a few days and we still don't really know what will happen with Kurt Rambis.  Enjoy the optimism while it lasts.  I know I am.
