2015 Las Vegas Summer League: The First Towns-Okafor Battle?

New, comments

The Minnesota Timberwolves play on the opening night of the NBA's Summer League in Las Vegas against the Los Angeles Lakers, a game which will likely feature the top two picks in next week's draft.

Richard Mackson-USA TODAY Sports

The NBA released the schedule for the 2015 Las Vegas Summer League today, and the Minnesota Timberwolves get top billing in the battle of the top two picks, likely Karl-Anthony Towns and Jahlil Okafor. The Wolves will play their first game at 7:30pm CT on Friday, July 10 at the Thomas & Mack Center on the campus of the University of Nevada-Las Vegas against the Los Angeles Lakers, owner of the number two overall pick. The Wolves also play the Chicago Bulls on Saturday, July 11 at 5:30pm CT at the Thomas & Mack Center, and the Utah Jazz, also at the Thomas & Mack Center on Monday, July 13 at 9:30pm CT. They will then be placed into a seeded tournament which starts play on Wednesday, July 15, and could progress as far as a final on Monday, July 20 (they'll play at least two games in the tournament round). The full schedule is below.

It will be interesting to see how much of the Wolves' roster plays on the Summer League team. Obviously the number one overall pick is likely to play, and I would assume that Zach LaVine, Adreian Payne and Anthony Bennett will be asked to make appearances. Looking back at last year's LVSL roster, only three of the members of the Wolves' summer league team remain with the team right now: LaVine, Gorgui Dieng and Shabazz Muhammad. Kyrylo Fesenko and Brady Heslip made it as far as training camp, and Glenn Robinson III and Alexey Shved are now with other teams. Obviously, Andrew Wiggins also played at summer league last year for the Cavaliers, as did Bennett (here's a game recap starring them from Fear the Sword), and Payne played for the Hawks (a look at his experience from Peachtree Hoops is here). Personally, I hope that Wiggins continues to enjoy his summer off, especially with possible Team Canada plans in his future, and I'd also hope to maybe see Lorenzo Brown and Justin Hamilton spend a little more time with the Wolves, even if they won't be around for the regular season.
