Sparks at Lynx: WNBA Finals Game One

It’s time. The two best teams in the league will face off for the title.

2:00 pm CDT

It’s here. After another season and a revamped playoff system, the Lynx return to the WNBA Finals seeking their 4th title in six seasons and second in a row. Their opponent: The Los Angeles Sparks.

These have been the best two teams in the league all season without any real question. They both got off to fast starts, leaving the rest of the league in their wake, and cruised through the season, with the Lynx finishing strong to claim the top seed.

As I wrote about when previewing the series, not only did these teams have the best records in the league, their net ratings far outpaced any other teams, and this matchup seemed almost inevitable for most of the summer.

And here we are. The Sparks are led by their MVP Nneka Ogwumike and their perennial All-Star Candace Parker, and have a strong three-point shooting game. The Lynx bring Maya Moore and three other Olympians, including the Defensive Player of the year in Sylvia Fowles, the top defense in the WNBA, and strength on the glass.

The Lynx beat the Sparks in two of their three meetings, but those were close wins, while the Sparks blew out the Lynx in their one win at Target Center. This series could go either way, with Lynx fans hoping their depth of championship experience helps them through. A second straight title would be a fantastic accomplishment for this group that has been so good under Cheryl Reeve for the past six years.

It’s going to be a terrific series, and a great showcase. Target Center is gonna be full, and it’s gonna be loud. This is what we’ve been waiting for.
