The 2020-21 NBA G League Draft was officially held yesterday, with 17 teams having the ability to draft a deep list of familiar players during the three-round event, which was conducted (like everything else in life) via Zoom.
Only players signed to a 2020-21 NBA G League “Standard Player Contract” were eligible to be drafted, and teams were not technically required to make any selections in the draft (although, once a team declines a pick, they no longer had the ability to make any selections for the remainder of the draft).
With the Iowa Wolves slotted to pick fourth overall, the top three picks of the G League Draft went like this:
- Greensboro Swarm: Admiral Schofield
- Memphis Hustle: Freddie Gillespie
- Canton Charge: Antonio Blakeney
When it was time to finally make their decision, the Wolves selected 24-year old Allonzo Trier, a five-star high school recruit out of Seattle, Washington who ended up playing three seasons at the University of Arizona:

Trier went undrafted back in 2018, and eventually signed a two-way contract with the New York Knicks. In his first two NBA seasons, the former Wildcat appeared in 88 games, averaged 9.7 points and shot 38.4% from three. A quick YouTube search brings up a fairly strong compilation of highlights from the former Knick during his short career thus far:
To the untrained eye (which is exactly what I possess), his game reminds me a *little* of how Jaylen Nowell looked in college. Trier is, as the kids say, a “walking bucket” and should get plenty of run with the Iowa Wolves down in the Orlando bubble, which is scheduled to kick off in February.
Speaking of the G League bubble — as far as I know, a lot still remains unknown about how exactly that will all play out. I’m fairly certain players on two-way contracts will not be participating, and we shouldn’t expect a lot (or any for that matter) of guys moving back-and-forth from the bubble to the big leagues dur to various COVID-19 protocols. (If you know anything else about the upcoming bubble, please feel free to share that information below in the comments).
Either way, Trier looks like a fun option for the Iowa coaching staff to get their hands on, and continues a theme of Gersson Rosas and his entire Minnesota Timberwolves staff leaving no stone unturned as it pertains to working the margins to find developmental projects.
