On June 24, the Timberwolves announced their official Summer League roster, which featured a new name to many fans – Kok Yat.
Immediately after the announcement, many devoted fans found themselves searching for whoever "Kok Yat" is. Despite having a fascinating name and an exciting skillset, Kok Yat isn’t necessarily a well known prospect.
Yat, the 20 year old, was born in Anchorage, Alaska. In 2021, Yat graduated from Norcross high school in Georgia as a three star prospect. Shortly after his stint in high school, an opportunity to play professionally at Overtime Elite presented itself. Overtime Elite is designed for players ages 16-19 who are looking to enhance their skill sets and eventually reach the NBA.
After a strong start to his OTE career, Yat suffered a foot injury, shutting down the remainder of his season. In the 2022-23 season, expectations were high for Yat, but once again injuries stopped him from playing.
Despite the injuries that Yat has battled, his potential is undeniable. The 6’9" forward has a 41" vertical, which would have been the third highest in this year’s NBA combine. Yat also possesses a fluid jumper, and advanced handles for a player of his size.
Don’t be surprised when Yat opens some eyes at this year’s NBA Summer League.
